The study of single-bubble dynamics in histotripsy and high-amplitude ultrasound has been limited due to the lack of experimental data for bubble dynamics under a well-characterized driving pressure. However, recent measurements of radius vs. time for single, spherical histotripsy-nucleated bubbles in water have enabled the validation and comparison of various modeling approaches. This study presents a strategy for inferring an analytic representation of histotripsy waveforms directly from experimental data which is then used to compare and validate compressible and incompressible models as well as different thermal models. The calculated validation metric obtained for each model applied to 88 experimental data sets shows minimal distinction among the modeling approaches considered (less than 1%). These results suggest that the proposed strategy combined with simple models accurately represent single-bubble dynamics in histotripsy, including at and near the maximum bubble radius while minimizing parametric uncertainty and computational resource demands. Remaining sources of parametric and model-based uncertainty are discussed. The authors of this study are Lauren Mancia, Mauro Rodriguez, Jonathan Sukovich, Zhen Xu, and Eric Johnsen.
Scientists have had trouble studying bubbles in histotripsy and high-amplitude ultrasound because they don't have enough information. But recently, they were able to measure the size of bubbles created by histotripsy and compare different ways of modeling them. They also came up with a way to analyze the sound waves used in histotripsy based on experimental data. The models they tested all worked pretty well, and using this method can help scientists study bubbles more accurately while using fewer resources.

Exploring Single-Bubble Dynamics in Histotripsy and High-Amplitude Ultrasound
Histotripsy is a medical procedure that uses high-amplitude ultrasound to break up tissue. It has been used for various applications, including kidney stone fragmentation and tumor ablation. However, the study of single-bubble dynamics in histotripsy and high-amplitude ultrasound has been limited due to the lack of experimental data for bubble dynamics under a well-characterized driving pressure.
In order to address this issue, Lauren Mancia, Mauro Rodriguez, Jonathan Sukovich, Zhen Xu, and Eric Johnsen recently conducted a study which presents a strategy for inferring an analytic representation of histotripsy waveforms directly from experimental data. This was then used to compare and validate compressible and incompressible models as well as different thermal models. The results obtained from this study suggest that the proposed strategy combined with simple models accurately represent single-bubble dynamics in histotripsy at maximum bubble radius while minimizing parametric uncertainty and computational resource demands.
Experimental Data
The authors of this study collected recent measurements of radius vs. time for single spherical bubbles nucleated by histotripsy in water. These measurements were used to validate different modeling approaches such as compressible or incompressible models as well as different thermal models.
Validation Metric
The validation metric obtained for each model applied to 88 experimental data sets showed minimal distinction among the modeling approaches considered (less than 1%). This suggests that the proposed strategy combined with simple models can accurately represent single bubble dynamics in histotripsy at maximum bubble radius while minimizing parametric uncertainty and computational resource demands.
Remaining Sources of Uncertainty
Despite these promising results there are still sources of parametric and model based uncertainties that need further exploration such as how temperature affects bubble oscillations or how acoustic nonlinearities affect bubble behavior near collapse conditions . In conclusion , this research paper provides an important insight into understanding single -bubble dynamics in histotripy which can be useful for future studies on improving accuracy when using high - amplitude ultrasound .
A variety of approaches have been used to model the dynamics of a single, isolated bubble nucleated by a microsecond length high-amplitude ultrasound pulse (e.g., a histotripsy pulse). Until recently, the lack of single--bubble experimental radius vs. time data for bubble dynamics under a well-characterized driving pressure has limited model validation efforts. This study uses radius vs. time measurements of single, spherical histotripsy-nucleated bubbles in water [Wilson et al., Phys. Rev. E, 2019, 99, 043103] to quantitatively compare and validate a variety of bubble dynamics modeling approaches, including compressible and incompressible models as well as different thermal models. A strategy for inferring an analytic representation of histotripsy waveforms directly from experimental radius vs. time and cavitation threshold data is presented. We compare distributions of a calculated validation metric obtained for each model applied to $88$ experimental data sets. There is minimal distinction ($< 1\%$) among the modeling approaches for compressibility and thermal effects considered in this study. These results suggest that our proposed strategy to infer the waveform, combined with simple models minimizing parametric uncertainty and computational resource demands accurately represent single-bubble dynamics in histotripsy, including at and near the maximum bubble radius. Remaining sources of parametric and model-based uncertainty are discussed.
