This study focuses on the development and analysis of various models for interacting spherical bubbles in a compressible liquid. The existing models, based on delay differential equations and using the Keller-Miksis and Gilmore-Akulichev models, are found to be unstable when applied to closely spaced bubbles. In order to address this issue, the authors propose a new model specifically designed for a single spherical bubble in a compressible liquid. The newly proposed model is then used to derive a stable model for interacting bubbles. To evaluate the accuracy of this new model, a qualitative comparison is made with the results obtained from direct numerical integration of the fluid equations of motion. The findings suggest that the new model provides more accurate results compared to the standard Keller-Miksis or Gilmore-Akulichev models when it comes to describing single bubble dynamics. Overall, this research contributes to our understanding of bubble dynamics in compressible liquids by introducing a stable model which can lead to more accurate predictions in practical applications involving closely spaced bubbles. The study highlights the limitations of previous models and presents an improved approach that can improve our understanding of bubble dynamics in these types of fluids.

Single-bubble dynamics in histotripsy and high-amplitude ultrasound: Modeling and validation
Lauren Mancia, Mauro Rodriguez, Jonathan Sukovich et al. · 2020 · Fluid Dynamics · AI summary available
    Abstract

A variety of approaches have been used to model the dynamics of a single, isolated bubble nucleated by a microsecond length high-amplitude ultrasound pulse (e.g., a histotripsy pulse). Until recently, the lack of single--bubble experimental radius vs. time data for bubble dynamics under a well-characterized driving pressure has limited model validation efforts. This study uses radius vs. time measurements of single, spherical histotripsy-nucleated bubbles in water [Wilson et al., Phys. Rev. E, 2019, 99, 043103] to quantitatively compare and validate a variety of bubble dynamics modeling approaches, including compressible and incompressible models as well as different thermal models. Simulating fluid-fluid displacement in a soft capillary tube: How compliance delays interfacial instability and bubble pinch-off
Sthavishtha R. Bhopalam, Ruben Juanes, Hector Gomez · 2025 · Fluid Dynamics · AI summary available
    Abstract

The displacement of a more viscous fluid by a less viscous immiscible fluid in confined geometries is a fundamental problem in multiphase flows. Recent experiments have shown that such fluid-fluid displacement in micro-capillary tubes can lead to interfacial instabilities and, eventually, bubble pinch-off. A critical yet often overlooked aspect of this system is the effect of the tube's deformability on the onset of interfacial instability and bubble pinch-off. Here, we present a computational fluid-structure interaction model and an algorithm to simulate this fluid-fluid displacement problem in a soft capillary tube. We use a phase-field model for the fluids and a nonlinear hyperelastic mod…

Regressing bubble cluster dynamics as a disordered many-body system

    Abstract

The coherent dynamics of bubble clusters in liquid are of fundamental and industrial importance and are elusive due to the complex interactions of disordered bubble oscillations. Here we introduce and demonstrate unsupervised learning of the coherent physics by combining theory and principal component analysis. From data, the method extracts and quantifies coherent dynamical features based on their energy. We analyze simulation data sets of disordered clusters under harmonic excitation. Results suggest that the coherence is lowered by polydispersity and nonlinearity but in cavitating regimes underlying correlations can be isolated in a single cohererent mode characterized by mean-field inter…

Low Mach number lattice Boltzmann model for turbulent combustion: flow in confined geometries
    S. A. Hosseini, N. Darabiha, D. Thevenin · 2022 · Fluid Dynamics · AI summary available
    Abstract

A hybrid lattice Boltzmann/finite-difference solver for low Mach thermo-compressible flows developed in earlier works is extended to more realistic and challenging configurations involving turbulence and complex geometries in the present article. The major novelty here as compared to previous contributions is the application of a more robust collision operator, considerably extending the stability of the original single relaxation time model and facilitating larger Reynolds number flow simulations. Additionally, a subgrid model and the thickened flame approach have also been added allowing for efficient large eddy simulations of turbulent reactive flows in complex geometries. This robust sol…

Asymptotically-consistent analytical solutions for the non-Newtonian Sakiadis boundary layer
Nastaran Naghshineh, Nathaniel S. Barlow, Mohamed A. Samaha et al. · 2023 · Fluid Dynamics · AI summary available
    Abstract

The Sakiadis boundary layer induced by a moving wall in a semi-infinite fluid domain is a fundamental laminar flow field relevant to high speed coating processes. This work provides an analytical solution to the boundary layer problem for Ostwald-de Waele power law fluids via a power series expansion, and extends the approach taken for Newtonian fluids (Naghshineh et al., 2023) in which variable substitutions (i.e. gauge functions) are chosen to be consistent with the large distance behavior away from the wall. Contrary to prior literature, the asymptotic behavior dictates that a solution only exists in the range of power law exponents, $\alpha$, lying in the range $0.5 < \alpha \leq 1$. A p…

Gas Bubbles Emerging from a Submerged Granular Bed
John A. Meier, Joseph S. Jewell, Christopher E. Brennen · 2009 · Fluid Dynamics · AI summary available
    Abstract

This fluid dynamics video was submitted to the Gallery of Fluid Motion for the 2009 APS Division of Fluid Dynamics Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In this video we show some results from a simple experiment where air was injected by a single nozzle at known constant flow rates in the bottom of a granular bed submerged in water. The injected air propagates through the granular bed in one of two modes. Mode 1 emergence involves small discrete bubbles taking tortuous paths through the interstitial space of the bed. Multiple small bubbles can be emitted from the bed in an array of locations at the same time during Mode 1 emergence. Mode 2 emergence involves large discrete bubbles locally flui…

Acoustic Tweezing and Patterning of Concentration Fields in Microfluidics
    Jonas T. Karlsen, Henrik Bruus · 2016 · Phys. Rev. Applied 7, 034017 (2017) · Not summarized yet
    Abstract

We demonstrate theoretically that acoustic forces acting on inhomogeneous fluids can be used to pattern and manipulate solute concentration fields into spatio-temporally controllable configurations stabilized against gravity. A theoretical framework describing the dynamics of concentration fields that weakly perturb the fluid density and speed of sound is presented and applied to study manipulation of concentration fields in rectangular-channel acoustic eigenmodes and in Bessel-function acoustic vortices. In the first example, methods to obtain horizontal and vertical multi-layer stratification of the concentration field at the end of a flow-through channel are presented. In the second examp…

Teaching the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations to Fast Neural Surrogate Models in 3D
Nils Wandel, Michael Weinmann, Reinhard Klein · 2020 · Fluid Dynamics · Not summarized yet
    Abstract

Physically plausible fluid simulations play an important role in modern computer graphics and engineering. However, in order to achieve real-time performance, computational speed needs to be traded-off with physical accuracy. Surrogate fluid models based on neural networks have the potential to achieve both, fast fluid simulations and high physical accuracy. However, these approaches rely on massive amounts of training data, require complex pipelines for training and inference or do not generalize to new fluid domains. In this work, we present significant extensions to a recently proposed deep learning framework, which addresses the aforementioned challenges in 2D. We go from 2D to 3D and pr…

How are these papers found?

We compare the title and abstract of this paper with those of every paper summarized on this site, and with the papers Semantic Scholar recommends, those it cites and those citing it (for a much-cited paper, its most recent citations and, from OpenAlex, the most cited ones). Among the prior work and the follow-ups, the papers that use each other in depth, a method it uses and the much-cited follow-ups come a little higher. The levels (very close, close, related) come from the similarity of the texts, not from a judgment of quality; * marks a paper without an abstract, compared by its title. The sentence under a paper is written by an AI from the two abstracts: check it in the papers. A paper marked not relevant by three readers leaves the list.
