The field of pavement damage segmentation has greatly benefited from the use of deep learning and large-scale datasets. To address the limited availability of current public datasets, a team of researchers led by Zheng Tong, Tao Ma, Ju Huyan, and Weiguang Zhang proposed Pavementscapes - a large-scale hierarchical image dataset designed to develop and evaluate methods for pavement damage segmentation. The Pavementscapes dataset consists of 4,000 high-resolution images (1024 x 2048) recorded during real-world pavement inspection projects involving 15 different pavements. It includes 8,680 manually labeled damage instances with six different classes at the pixel level. A statistical study was conducted to provide an in-depth investigation and analysis of the proposed dataset. Numerous experiments were performed using deep neural networks to segment pavement damages in the Pavementscapes dataset. These experiments identified top-performing models that serve as baselines for an open challenge on pavement inspection while also highlighting existing problems with using deep learning for damage segmentation and providing potential solutions. Overall, the Pavementscapes dataset provides researchers with a valuable resource for developing and testing new methods for pavement damage segmentation using deep learning techniques. This research is expected to lead to more accurate and efficient detection and repair of pavement damages in real-world applications.
