Résumé scientifique

The shape and tails of partial distribution functions (PDF) for a climatological signal, i.e. the El Nino SOI and the turbulent nature of the ocean-atmosphere variability are linked through a model encompassing Tsallis nonextensive statistics and leading to evolution equations of the Langevin and Fokker-Planck type. A model originally proposed to describe the intermittent behavior of turbulent flows describes the behavior of the normalized variability for such a climatological index, for small and large time windows, both for small and large variability. This normalized variabil- ity distributions can be sufficiently well fitted with a chi-square-distribution. The transition between the small time scale model of nonextensive, intermittent process and the large scale Gaussian exten- sive homogeneous fluctuation picture is found to occur at above ca. a 48 months time lag. The intermittency exponent ($\kappa$) in the framework of the Kolmogorov log-normal model is found to be related to the scaling exponent of the PDF moments. The value of $\kappa$ (= 0.25) is in agreement with the intermittency exponent recently obtained for other atmospheric data.

Power law correlations in the Southern Oscillation Index fluctuations characterizing El Nino
    M. Ausloos, K. Ivanova · 2001 · Mécanique statistique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

The southern oscillation index (SOI) is a characteristic of the El Nino phenomenon. SOI monthly averaged data is analyzed for the time interval 1866-2000. The tail of the cumulative distribution of the fluctuations of SOI signal is studied in order to characterize the amplitude scaling of the fluctuations and the occurrence of extreme events. Large fluctuations are more likely to occur than the Gaussian distribution would predict. The time scaling of fluctuations is studied by applying the energy spectrum and the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) statistical method. Self-affine properties are found to be pertinent to the SOI signal and therefore suggest power law correlations of fluctuati…

Statistical optimization for passive scalar transport: maximum entropy production vs maximum Kolmogorov-Sinay entropy
Martin Mihelich, Berengere Dubrulle, Didier Paillard et al. · 2015 · Mécanique statistique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

We derive rigorous results on the link between the principle of maximum entropy production and the principle of maximum Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy using a Markov model of the passive scalar diffusion called the Zero Range Process. We show analytically that both the entropy production and the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy seen as functions of f admit a unique maximum denoted fmaxEP and fmaxKS. The behavior of these two maxima is explored as a function of the system disequilibrium and the system resolution N. The main result of this article is that fmaxEP and fmaxKS have the same Taylor expansion at _rst order in the deviation of equilibrium. We find that fmaxEP hardly depends on N whereas fmaxKS dep…

Drift-Controlled Anomalous Diffusion: A Solvable Gaussian Model
Fabrizio Lillo, Rosario N. Mantegna · 2000 · Mécanique statistique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

We introduce a Langevin equation characterized by a time dependent drift. By assuming a temporal power-law dependence of the drift we show that a great variety of behavior is observed in the dynamics of the variance of the process. In particular diffusive, subdiffusive, superdiffusive and stretched exponentially diffusive processes are described by this model for specific values of the two control parameters. The model is also investigated in the presence of an external harmonic potential. We prove that the relaxation to the stationary solution is power-law in time with an exponent controlled by one of model parameters.

Classical limit of measurement-induced transition in many-body chaos in integrable and non-integrable oscillator chains
Sibaram Ruidas, Sumilan Banerjee · 2022 · Mécanique statistique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

We discuss the dynamics of integrable and non-integrable chains of coupled oscillators under continuous weak position measurements in the semiclassical limit. We show that, in this limit, the dynamics is described by a standard stochastic Langevin equation, and a measurement-induced transition appears as a noise- and dissipation-induced chaotic-to-non-chaotic transition akin to stochastic synchronization. In the non-integrable chain of anharmonically coupled oscillators, we show that the temporal growth and the ballistic light-cone spread of a classical out-of-time correlator characterized by the Lyapunov exponent and the butterfly velocity, are halted above a noise or below an interaction s…

Maximum Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy vs minimum mixing time in Markov chains
Martin Mihelich, Berengere Dubrulle, Didier Paillard et al. · 2015 · Mécanique statistique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

Many modern techniques employed in physics, such a computation of path integrals, rely on random walks on graphs that can be represented as Markov chains. Traditionally, estimates of running times of such sampling algorithms are computed using the number of steps in the chain needed to reach the stationary distribution. This quantity is generally defined as mixing time and is often difficult to compute. In this paper, we suggest an alternative estimate based on the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, by establishing a link between the maximization of KSE and the minimization of the mixing time. Since KSE are easier to compute in general than mixing time, this link provides a new faster method to appro…

Power-law exponent in multiplicative Langevin equation with temporally correlated noise
Satoru Morita · 2017 · Journal of the Physical Society of Japan 87, 053801 (2018) · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

Power-law distributions are ubiquitous in nature. Random multiplicative processes are a basic model for the generation of power-law distributions. It is known that, for discrete-time systems, the power-law exponent decreases as the autocorrelation time of the multiplier increases. However, for continuous-time ystems, it has not yet been elucidated as to how the temporal correlation affects the power-law behavior. Herein, we have analytically investigated a multiplicative Langevin equation with colored noise. We show that the power-law exponent depends on the details of the multiplicative noise, in contrast to the case of discrete-time systems.

Continuously varying exponents in the distribution of waiting times in the symmetric exclusion process on a percolation cluster
Arpan Chatterjee, Kabir Ramola, Deepak Dhar · 2026 · Mécanique statistique · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

We study the waiting-time distribution of hard-core interacting particles in the symmetric exclusion process on one- and two-dimensional lattices with side branches attached to each lattice site in the steady state. We use numerical simulations together with an approximate analytical treatment of particles trapped in side branches in the steady state. Such a two-dimensional carpet serves as a simplified model for trapping of a supercritical percolation cluster. At high particle densities, the system exhibits strong dynamical heterogeneity, with the distribution of logarithms of waiting times developing well-separated peaks corresponding to particles trapped at different depths from the backb…

Dissipation in Hydrodynamics from Micro- to Macroscale: Wisdom from Boltzmann and Stochastic Thermodynamics
Danilo Forastiere, Francesco Avanzini, Massimiliano Esposito · 2023 · Mécanique statistique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

We show that macroscopic irreversible thermodynamics for viscous fluids can be derived from exact information-theoretic thermodynamic identities valid at the microscale. Entropy production in particular is a measure of the loss of many-particle correlations in the same way in which it measures the loss of system-reservoirs correlations in stochastic thermodynamics (ST). More specifically, we first show that boundary conditions at the macroscopic level define a natural decomposition of the entropy production rate (EPR) in terms of thermodynamic forces multiplying their conjugated currents, as well as a change in suitable nonequilibrium potential that acts as a Lyapunov function in absence of …
