Even if laboratory practice is essential for all scientific branches of knowledge, it is often neglected at High School, due to lack of time and/or resources. To establish a closer contact between school and experimental sciences, the University Sapienza of Roma and the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) launched the Lab2Go project, with the goal of spreading laboratory practice among students and teachers in high schools.

Inexpensive Student-fabricated Solar Panels and Some Related Classroom Measurements
Nathan T. Moore, Carl D. Ferkinhoff · 2017 · Enseignement de la physique · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

We describe a procedure in which elementary education students fabricate 3-cell, $\approx5 ~\mathrm{Watt}$, $1.6~\mathrm{V}$ solar panels. The panels are manufactured at a cost of about $\$6$ each. The paper also describes a series of characterization activities that we have had our students complete with the panels once fabrication is complete. Specifically, our students have determined: the dependence of panel power on load resistance, the variation of open-circuit panel voltage between different students' work, and energy capture efficiency. The activity also allows opportunities for discussion of manufacturing and process improvement which can provide unusual connections to engineering a…

Interactions between teaching assistants and students boost engagement in physics labs
Jared B. Stang, Ido Roll · 2013 · Enseignement de la physique · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

Through in-class observations of teaching assistants (TAs) and students in the lab sections of a large introductory physics course, we study which TA behaviors can be used to predict student engagement and, in turn, how this engagement relates to learning. For the TAs, we record data to determine how they adhere to and deliver the lesson plan and how they interact with students during the lab. For the students, we use observations to record the level of student engagement and pre- and post-tests of lab skills to measure learning. We find that the frequency of TA-student interactions, especially those initiated by the TAs, is a positive and significant predictor of student engagement. Interes…

How Peripheral Interactive Systems Can Support Teachers with Differentiated Instruction: Using FireFlies as a Probe
Nine Sellier, Pengcheng An · 2020 · Enseignement de la physique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

Teachers' response to the real-time needs of diverse learners in the classroom is important for each learner's success. Teachers who give differentiated instruction (DI) provide pertinent support to each student and acknowledge their differences in learning style and pace. However, due to the already complex and intensive routines in classrooms, it is demanding and time-consuming for teachers to implement DI on-the-spot. This study aims to explore how to ease teachers' classroom differentiation by enabling effortless, low-threshold student-teacher communications through a peripheral interactive system. Namely, we present a six-week study, in which we iteratively co-designed and field-tested …

3rd grade English language learners making sense of sound
Enrique Suarez, Valerie Otero · 2012 · Enseignement de la physique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

Despite the extensive body of research that supports scientific inquiry and argumentation as cornerstones of physics learning, these strategies continue to be virtually absent in most classrooms, especially those that involve students who are learning English as a second language. This study presents results from an investigation of 3rd grade students' discourse about how length and tension affect the sound produced by a string. These students came from a variety of language backgrounds, and all were learning English as a second language. Our results demonstrate varying levels, and uses, of experiential, imaginative, and mechanistic reasoning strategies. Using specific examples from students…

An extensive Study of Teaching / Learning Quantum Mechanics in College
Bayram Akarsu · 2010 · Enseignement de la physique · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

Quantum physics is considered as one of the most remarkable discoveries of contemporary physics grown during previous century and gradually manifested to the scientific world such as inventions of laser, the transistor, the electron microscope, and semiconductor. Teaching of physical science has been stressed in the National Science Education Standards (NSES) from level K-12 as well as many state science standards (Gossard, 2000). The objectives of the current study are to investigate prospective elucidation of the most common learning difficulties, insufficient teaching strategies and other significant instructional or conceptual problems encountered by science and engineering college stude…

Surveying undergraduate Greek student's knowledge on some issues of radiations and Nuclear Energy
Mirofora Pilakouta, John Sinatkas · 2020 · Enseignement de la physique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

In this work we present some results from a survey aimed to assess the knowledge and views of the Greek undergraduate students (technology oriented) on some issues of radiations, nuclear energy and their consequences. Findings indicate that the, examined group, of Greek students have a series of misconceptions and faulty views on radiations and general nuclear issues. No significant differences in the students responses related to the type of secondary school they attended were found. Moreover, analysis according to gender, indicated that females are less informed than males in most of the examined issues
