Controlling mechanical properties of a polymeric glassGeorge J. Papakonstantopoulos, Juan J. de Pablo · 2016 · Matière molle · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
In this work we use molecular simulations to examine methods of controlling mechanical properties of polymeric glass materials such as elastic moduli, mechanical heterogeneity as well as their glass transition temperature. We study filled and unfilled polymers and examine the effect of particle size, volume fraction and polymer-particle interactions. We identify a relationship between mobility and dynamic heterogeneity with elastic moduli and glass transition temperature.

Rheology of Pseudomonas fluorescens biofilms: from experiments to predictive DPD mesoscopic modellingJose Mart. n-Roca, Valentino Bianco, Francisco Alarcon et al. · 2023 · J. Chem. Phys. 158, 074902 (2023) · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Bacterial biofilms mechanically behave as viscoelastic media consisting of micron-sized bacteria crosslinked to a selfproduced network of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) embedded in water. Structural principles for numerical modelling aim at describing mesoscopic viscoelasticity without loosing detail on the underlying interactions existing in wide regimes of deformation under hydrodynamic stress. Here we approach the computational challenge to model bacterial biofilms for predictive mechanics in silico under variable stress conditions. Up-to-date models are not entirely satisfactory due to the plethora of parameters required to make them functioning under the effects of stress. As …

Optimal cement paste yield stress for the production of stable cement foamsBlandine Feneuil, Nicolas Roussel, Olivier Pitois · 2019 · Cement and Concrete Research (2019) 120, pp 142-151 · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Production of morphology-controlled cement foams remains challenging, mainly due to bubble stability issues during cement setting. The use of cement paste with high yield stress is expected to promote stability by damping intrinsic bubble kinetics. Here we show however that for given W/C ratio, fresh foam stability can be achieved instead by decreasing the yield stress of the cement paste. Indeed, in this low apparent yield stress regime, van der Waals attraction between cement grains is reduced and grains are allowed to be efficiently packed by bubbles, providing enhanced mechanical properties. This result is obtained for two distinct additives used at controlled concentrations and without …

Thermomechanical properties of polypropylene and styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene blends: a molecular simulation and experimental studyPashupati Pokharel, Feng Wei, Jianyi Shi et al. · 2021 · Matière molle · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Polymer blends consisting of two or more polymers are important for a wide variety of industries and processes, but, the precise mechanism of their thermomechanical behaviour is incompletely understood. In order to understand clearly, it is essential to determine the miscibility and interactions between the components in polymer blend and its macroscopic thermomechanical properties. In this study, we performed experiments on SEBS and isotactic PP blends (SP) as well as molecular dynamics simulations, aiming to know the role played by molecular interactions on the thermomechanical properties. To investigate the glass transition temperature (Tg) of SEBS, PP and their blends at different ratio,…

Protein-polysaccharide interactions and aggregates in food formulationsLuigi Gentile · 2022 · Current Opinion in Colloid & Interface Science, Volume 48, 2020, Pages 18-27 · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
The protein-polysaccharide combinations that lead to electrostatic complex and coacervates formation are the object of extensive research using both layer-by-layer and mixed emulsion approaches. The protein-polysaccharide conjugates demonstrated interesting physico-chemical properties as stabilizers and emulsifiers as well as texture modifiers in food products. Furthermore, they are potential optimal nutrient delivery systems. Their complex behavior due to several factors such as pH, ionic strength, concentration, heat, and mechanical treatments is the main reason behind the continuous growth of the research field. The review is reporting same recent advances on the topic, along with an over…

On the product selectivity in the electrochemical reductive cleavage of lignin model compoundsMarcia Gabriely A. da Cruz, Bruno V. M. Rodrigues, Andjelka Ristic et al. · 2021 · Matière molle · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Research towards the production of renewable chemicals for fuel and energy industries has found lignin valorization as key. With a high carbon content and aromaticity, a fine-tuning of the depolymerization process is required to convert lignin into valuable chemicals. In context, model compounds have been used to understand the electrocatalyzed depolymerization for mimicking the typical linkages of lignin. In this investigation, 2-phenoxyacetophenone, a model compound for lignin \b{eta}-O-4 linkage, was electro-catalytically hydrogenated (ECH) in distinct three-electrode setups: an open and a membrane cell. A deep eutectic solvent based on ethylene-glycol and choline chloride was used to pur…

Tailoring the Morphology of Cellulose Nanocrystals via Controlled AggregationKévin Ballu, Jia-Hui Lim, Thomas G. Parton et al. · 2024 · Matière molle · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are bioderived nanoparticles that can be isolated from various sources of natural cellulose via acid hydrolysis. However, the link between particle morphological characteristics and their ensemble behavior is poorly understood, partly because of the difficulties in controlling the CNC morphology during their extraction process. In this work, the impacts of common post-hydrolysis treatments on the CNC morphology are investigated. The results indicate that the centrifugation step commonly applied during CNC purification favors the formation of composite particles made of aligned crystallites, referred to as 'bundles'. Scanning nanobeam electron diffraction reveals…

Guest-Tunable Dielectric Sensing Using a Single Crystal of HKUST-1Arun S. Babal, Abhijeet K. Chaudhari, Hamish H. -M. Yeung et al. · 2020 · Matière molle · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
There is rising interest on low-k dielectric materials based on porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for improved electrical insulation in microelectronics. Herein, we demonstrate the concept of MOF dielectric sensor built from a single crystal of HKUST-1. We study guest encapsulation effects of polar and non-polar molecules, by monitoring the transient dielectric response and AC conductivity of the crystal exposed to different vapors (water, I2, methanol, ethanol). The dielectric properties were measured along the <100> crystal direction in the frequency range of 100 Hz to 2 MHz. The dielectric data show the efficacy of MOF dielectric sensor for discriminating the guest analytes. The time…
