Self-Assembled Fatty Acid Crystalline Coatings Display Non-Toxic Superhydrophobic Antimicrobial PropertiesElena Prudnikov, Iryna Polishchuk, Andy Sand et al. · 2022 · Matière molle · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Superhydrophobcity is a well-known wetting phenomenon found in numerous plants and insects. It is achieved by the combination of the surfaces chemical properties and its surface roughness. Inspired by nature, numerous synthetic superhydrophobic surfaces have been developed for various applications. Designated surface coating is one of the fabrication routes to achieve the superhydrophobicity. Yet, many of these coatings, such as fluorine-based formulations, may pose severe health and environmental risks, limiting the applicability. Herein, we present a new family of superhydrophobic coatings comprised of natural saturated fatty acids, which are not only a part of our daily diet, but can be p…

Fabrication of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Ceramic Composites by Wet ElectrospinningYunzhi Xu, Junior Ndayikengurukiye, Ange-Therese Akono et al. · 2021 · Matière molle · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
We propose a novel approach of wet electrospinning to yield fiber-reinforced polymer ceramic composites, where a reactive ceramic precursor gel is used as a collector. We illustrate our approach by generating polyethylene oxide (PEO) fibers in a potassium silicate gel; the gel is later activated using metakaolin to yield a ceramic-0.5 wt% PEO fiber composite. An increase of 29% and 22% is recorded for the fabricated polymer ceramic composites in terms of indentation modulus and indentation hardness respectively. Our initial findings demonstrate the process viability and might lead to a potentially scalable manufacturing approach for fiber-reinforced polymer ceramic composites.

Rheology of Pseudomonas fluorescens biofilms: from experiments to predictive DPD mesoscopic modellingJose Mart. n-Roca, Valentino Bianco, Francisco Alarcon et al. · 2023 · J. Chem. Phys. 158, 074902 (2023) · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Bacterial biofilms mechanically behave as viscoelastic media consisting of micron-sized bacteria crosslinked to a selfproduced network of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) embedded in water. Structural principles for numerical modelling aim at describing mesoscopic viscoelasticity without loosing detail on the underlying interactions existing in wide regimes of deformation under hydrodynamic stress. Here we approach the computational challenge to model bacterial biofilms for predictive mechanics in silico under variable stress conditions. Up-to-date models are not entirely satisfactory due to the plethora of parameters required to make them functioning under the effects of stress. As …

Thermomechanical properties of polypropylene and styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene blends: a molecular simulation and experimental studyPashupati Pokharel, Feng Wei, Jianyi Shi et al. · 2021 · Matière molle · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Polymer blends consisting of two or more polymers are important for a wide variety of industries and processes, but, the precise mechanism of their thermomechanical behaviour is incompletely understood. In order to understand clearly, it is essential to determine the miscibility and interactions between the components in polymer blend and its macroscopic thermomechanical properties. In this study, we performed experiments on SEBS and isotactic PP blends (SP) as well as molecular dynamics simulations, aiming to know the role played by molecular interactions on the thermomechanical properties. To investigate the glass transition temperature (Tg) of SEBS, PP and their blends at different ratio,…

Tailoring the Morphology of Cellulose Nanocrystals via Controlled AggregationKévin Ballu, Jia-Hui Lim, Thomas G. Parton et al. · 2024 · Matière molle · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are bioderived nanoparticles that can be isolated from various sources of natural cellulose via acid hydrolysis. However, the link between particle morphological characteristics and their ensemble behavior is poorly understood, partly because of the difficulties in controlling the CNC morphology during their extraction process. In this work, the impacts of common post-hydrolysis treatments on the CNC morphology are investigated. The results indicate that the centrifugation step commonly applied during CNC purification favors the formation of composite particles made of aligned crystallites, referred to as 'bundles'. Scanning nanobeam electron diffraction reveals…

Optimal cement paste yield stress for the production of stable cement foamsBlandine Feneuil, Nicolas Roussel, Olivier Pitois · 2019 · Cement and Concrete Research (2019) 120, pp 142-151 · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Production of morphology-controlled cement foams remains challenging, mainly due to bubble stability issues during cement setting. The use of cement paste with high yield stress is expected to promote stability by damping intrinsic bubble kinetics. Here we show however that for given W/C ratio, fresh foam stability can be achieved instead by decreasing the yield stress of the cement paste. Indeed, in this low apparent yield stress regime, van der Waals attraction between cement grains is reduced and grains are allowed to be efficiently packed by bubbles, providing enhanced mechanical properties. This result is obtained for two distinct additives used at controlled concentrations and without …

From liquid to solid bonding in cohesive granular mediaJean-Yves Delenne, Fabien Soulié, Moulay Saïd El Youssoufi et al. · 2010 · Mechanics of Materials (2011) 529-537 · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
We study the transition of a granular packing from liquid to solid bonding in the course of drying. The particles are initially wetted by a liquid brine and the cohesion of the packing is ensured by capillary forces, but the crystallization of the solute transforms the liquid bonds into partially cemented bonds. This transition is evidenced experimentally by measuring the compressive strength of the samples at regular intervals of times. Our experimental data reveal three regimes: 1) Up to a critical degree of saturation, no solid bonds are formed and the cohesion remains practically constant; 2) The onset of cementation occurs at the surface and a front spreads towards the center of the sam…

Direct visualization of superselective colloid-surface binding mediated by multivalent interactionsChristine Linne, Daniele Visco, Stefano Angioletti-Uberti et al. · 2021 · Matière molle · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Reliably distinguishing between cells based on minute differences in receptor density is crucial for cell-cell or virus-cell recognition, the initiation of signal transduction and selective targeting in directed drug delivery. Such sharp differentiation between different surfaces based on their receptor density can only be achieved by multivalent interactions. Several theoretical and experimental works have contributed to our understanding of this "superselectivity", however a versatile, controlled experimental model system that allows quantitative measurements on the ligand-receptor level is still missing. Here, we present a multivalent model system based on colloidal particles equipped wit…
