Abstract

This letter presents the first neutrino-argon cross-section measurement from the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We report the nominal flux-averaged single-differential cross sections of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on argon with a single proton and no pions in the final state as functions of the transverse kinematic imbalance variables. Using a subset of Run~1 data corresponding to $8.8\times10^{19}$ protons-on-target, we select 12,804 signal candidates with a purity of 91%. The extracted cross sections discriminate strongly among event-generator predictions, owing to the high statistics and the design of the analysis. Among the compared models, none successfully describes all three variables, with the largest discrepancies in the transverse missing momentum variable. These results set new benchmarks for neutrino-argon interaction modeling, which is crucial for high-precision measurements at current and future accelerator neutrino experiments.

First Measurement of Differential Cross Sections in Kinematic Imbalance Variables with Electron Neutrino Interactions Using the MicroBooNE Detector
MicroBooNE Collaboration P. Abratenko, D. Aldana, J. Asaadi et al. · 2026 · Not summarized yet

The MicroBooNE study measures kinematic-imbalance cross sections on argon, using electron-neutrino interactions rather than SBND’s muon-neutrino sample.

    Abstract

We report the first measurement of flux-integrated cross sections as a function of kinematic imbalance variables for electron neutrino interactions on argon. Kinematic imbalance variables, applied here to electron neutrino interactions for the first time, are particularly interesting due to their sensitivity to effects such as Fermi motion, multinucleon processes, and final-state interactions, providing a detailed lens to study neutrino-nucleus interactions. These measurements are performed using MicroBooNE's full dataset of $1.3 \times 10^{21}$ protons on target from the Booster Neutrino Beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The measured cross sections are compared to several n…

First double-differential cross-section measurements in proton multiplicity and kinematics for mesonless $ν_μ$ charged-current interactions on argon using the MicroBooNE detector
    P. Abratenko, D. Aldana, J. Asaadi et al. · 2026 · Not summarized yet

The MicroBooNE study measures mesonless muon-neutrino interactions on argon with one or more protons, focusing on proton multiplicity and kinematics.

    Abstract

We present the first double-differential cross-section measurements of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on argon with no mesons and one or more protons ($N_{p} \geq 1$) in the final state as a function of proton multiplicity and kinematics. The analysis uses the full Booster Neutrino Beam dataset collected by the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, corresponding to a total of $1.30 \times 10^{21}$ protons on target. We measure cross sections as a function of the proton multiplicity, the momenta and muon-proton opening angles of the leading and subleading protons up to and including the fourth-leading proton, as well as the total available kinetic energy of…

Neutrino electromagnetic properties after the first $pp$ solar neutrino observation at XENONnT

The XENONnT analysis uses solar-neutrino scattering data to study flux and electromagnetic properties, not accelerator neutrino interactions on argon.

    Abstract

The XENONnT Collaboration has recently reported the first measurement of low-energy solar neutrinos through elastic neutrino-electron scattering in a dark matter detector, opening a new window on Standard Model predictions and on neutrino electromagnetic properties. We analyze these data to extract the $pp$ neutrino flux normalization and the weak mixing angle at low momentum transfer ($\sim 0.1$ MeV). We also derive bounds on the neutrino charge radii, magnetic moments, and millicharges, as well as on the sterile-neutrino dipole portal. Since the $pp$-flux determination displays a mild excess, we further investigate the role of the $^{14}$C background in the fit and assess how it affects th…

The study recasts MiniBooNE and MicroBooNE data to search for new muon-coupled particles, rather than measuring neutrino-argon cross sections.

    Abstract

Accelerator-based experiments reliant on charged pion and kaon decays to produce muon-neutrino beams also deliver an associated powerful flux of muons. Therefore, these experiments can additionally be sensitive to light new particles that preferentially couple to muons and decay to visible final states on macroscopic length scales. Such particles are produced through rare 3-body meson decays in the decay pipe or via muon scattering in the beam dump, and decay in a downstream detector. To demonstrate the potential of this search strategy, we recast existing MiniBooNE and MicroBooNE studies of neutral pion production in neutrino-induced neutral-current scattering ($\nu_\mu N \to \nu_\mu N \pi^…

The dissertation studies neutrino-nucleus interaction models for DUNE with GENIE, addressing the broader modeling challenges relevant to argon measurements.

    Abstract

The recent generation of high-precision neutrino oscillation experiments, such as the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), relies on the accurate reconstruction of incident neutrino energy to determine fundamental parameters like Charge-Parity (CP) violation and the neutrino mass hierarchy. The use of Liquid Argon, introduces significant theoretical complexities. This dissertation provides a investigation into neutrino-nucleus scattering phenomenologies, connecting fundamental electroweak theory with computational simulations using the GENIE Monte Carlo event generator. The study evaluates the limitations of traditional frameworks, such as the Relativistic Fermi Gas (RFG) model, spec…

Search for Neutrino-Produced Long-Lived Particles Using the SBND Cosmic Ray Tagger Beam Telescope

The SBND study searches for neutrino-produced long-lived particles with a standalone cosmic-ray tagger, rather than measuring charged-current interactions.

    Abstract

The Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) is a liquid argon time projection chamber in Fermilab's Short-Baseline Neutrino Program, positioned 110 meters from the neutrino target along the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB). In addition to its neutrino physics goals, SBND enables searches for new physics, including long-lived particles (LLPs) produced via neutrino-nucleus upscattering that decay into visible final states. Although neutrino data taking with the full SBND experiment began in December 2024, a subset of the Cosmic Ray Tagger (CRT) system operated from 2017--2018 as a standalone detector, referred to as the CRT Beam Telescope, collecting data corresponding to $2.95\times 10^{20}$ protons o…

The Hyper-Kamiokande description presents a water-Cherenkov detector for oscillation, proton-decay, and neutrino studies, unlike SBND’s argon cross-section measurement.

    Abstract

A next generation water Cherenkov detector Hyper-Kamiokande to be built in Japan is described. The main goals of this project include a sensitive measurement of CP violation in neutrino oscillations, a search for proton decay and study of solar, atmospherics and astrophysical neutrinos. Key features of the Hyper-Kamiokande detector are described. The main emphasis is put on large photosensors. The recent progress in development of near neutrino detectors is also presented.

How are these papers found?

We compare the title and abstract of this paper with those of every paper summarized on this site, and with the papers Semantic Scholar recommends, those it cites and those citing it (for a much-cited paper, its most recent citations and, from OpenAlex, the most cited ones). Among the prior work and the follow-ups, the papers that use each other in depth, a method it uses and the much-cited follow-ups come a little higher. The levels (very close, close, related) come from the similarity of the texts, not from a judgment of quality; * marks a paper without an abstract, compared by its title. The sentence under a paper is written by an AI from the two abstracts: check it in the papers. A paper marked not relevant by three readers leaves the list.
