The essentials

  • Study measured yield and nuclear modification factor ($R_\mathrm{AA}$) for inclusive jet production in Pb+Pb and $pp$ collisions at the LHC
  • Jets reconstructed using anti-$k_t$ algorithm with $R=0.4$, covering 40-1000 GeV transverse momentum range in six rapidity intervals
  • $R_\mathrm{AA}$ increased with rising jet transverse momentum, peaking at 0.6 around 1 TeV in central collisions and varied across collision centrality
  • $R_\mathrm{AA}$ was independent of rapidity at low jet transverse momenta but decreased with increasing rapidity at higher momenta
  • Experimental setup utilized components like inner detector system (ID), lead/liquid-argon (LAr) EM calorimeter, trigger, and data acquisition systems
  • Analysis provided insights into jet suppression dependence on factors like collision centrality and rapidity, contributing to understanding of jet production in high-energy nuclear interactions

In this study, the yield and nuclear modification factor ($R_\mathrm{AA}$) for inclusive jet production were measured using 0.49 nb$^{-1}$ of Pb+Pb data at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV and 25 pb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ data at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Jets were reconstructed using the anti-$k_t$ algorithm with a radius parameter $R=0.4$, covering a transverse momentum range of 40-1000 GeV in six rapidity intervals spanning $|y|<2.8$. The results showed that $R_\mathrm{AA}$ increased with rising jet transverse momentum, peaking at approximately 0.6 at 1 TeV in central collisions and increasing towards peripheral collisions. Interestingly, $R_\mathrm{AA}$ was independent of rapidity at low jet transverse momenta but decreased with increasing rapidity at higher momenta. The experimental setup utilized various components of the ATLAS experiment such as the inner detector system (ID), lead/liquid-argon (LAr) electromagnetic (EM) calorimeter, and trigger and data acquisition systems. This detailed analysis provided insights into the dependence of jet suppression on factors like collision centrality and rapidity, shedding light on inclusive jets' behavior in heavy-ion collisions. Overall, this comprehensive study contributes valuable information to our understanding of jet production in high-energy nuclear interactions and has important implications for further research in this field.
