Nucleosynthetic constraints on the origin of Bennu and CI-like asteroidsM. Schönbächler, Mattias Ek, M. A. Fehr et al. · 2026 · Science Advances · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Analyses of returned samples from asteroids Bennu and Ryugu reveal notable similarities in chemical and isotopic compositions to Ivuna-type (CI) carbonaceous chondrites, prompting reassessment of their origin. We present nucleosynthetic iron (Fe), titanium (Ti), and chromium (Cr) isotope data for Bennu. Minor Cr isotope variations among aliquots likely reflect parent body aqueous alteration, whereas Fe and Ti isotope data are homogeneous and indistinguishable from those of Ryugu and CI chondrites at bulk (>20 milligrams) scale. These results demonstrate that CI-like bodies accreted from a common dust reservoir with affinities to both inner (noncarbonaceous) and outer (carbonaceous) Solar Sys…

A Possible Explanation for the Blue Spectral Slope Observed on B-type AsteroidsMark J. Loeffler, Beau S. Prince · 2022 · Earth and Planetary Astrophysics · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
In an effort to better understand the role dark material plays in the reflectance spectrum of carbonaceous asteroids, we performed laboratory studies focusing on quantifying how the addition of relevant dark material (graphite, magnetite and troilite) can alter the ultraviolet-visible and near-infrared spectrum of a neutral silicate mineral. We find that addition of graphite, magnetite and troilite all darken the reflectance spectrum of our forsterite samples and cause the spectral slope to decrease (become blue). These spectral changes can be caused by both nm- and micron-sized grains. In the ultraviolet-visible region, we find that graphite is most efficient at altering the spectral slope,…

The elemental composition of the Sun III. The neutron capture elements Cu to ThNicolas Grevesse, Pat Scott, Martin Asplund et al. · 2014 · Solar and Stellar Astrophysics · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
We re-evaluate the abundances of the elements in the Sun from copper ($Z=29$) to thorium ($Z=90$). Our results are mostly based on neutral and singly-ionised lines in the solar spectrum. We use the latest 3D hydrodynamic solar model atmosphere, and in a few cases also correct for departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE). In order to minimise statistical and systematic uncertainties, we make stringent line selections, employ the highest-quality observational data and carefully assess oscillator strengths, hyperfine constants and isotopic separations available in the literature, for every line included in our analysis. Our results are typically in good agreement with the abundanc…

Pervasive poorly crystalline Mg-rich hydrous silicate material in C-type asteroid matricesReon Okumura, Haruki Oya, Kosuke Inoue et al. · 2026 · Communications Earth & Environment · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
C-type asteroid-derived samples, including Ryugu and carbonaceous chondrites, consist primarily of fine-grained matrices of magnesium-rich hydrous silicates formed by aqueous alteration. These matrices are commonly interpreted as mixtures of serpentine- and saponite-like phyllosilicates, although their mineralogical characteristics do not fully correspond to well-crystalline terrestrial layered silicates. Here we compare magnesium K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra from Ryugu and carbonaceous chondrite matrices with those of magnesium-bearing hydrous silicates. The results indicate that the recorded magnesium coordination environments include a substantial contribution from …

Compositional evolution during rocky protoplanet accretionPhilip J. Carter, Zoë M. Leinhardt, Tim Elliott et al. · 2015 · Earth and Planetary Astrophysics · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
The Earth appears non-chondritic in its abundances of refractory lithophile elements, posing a significant problem for our understanding of its formation and evolution. It has been suggested that this non-chondritic composition may be explained by collisional erosion of differentiated planetesimals of originally chondritic composition. In this work, we present N-body simulations of terrestrial planet formation that track the growth of planetary embryos from planetesimals. We simulate evolution through the runaway and oligarchic growth phases under the Grand Tack model and in the absence of giant planets. These simulations include a state-of-the-art collision model which allows multiple colli…

A 3mm chemical exploration of small organics in Class I YSOsRomane Le Gal, Karin I. Öberg, Jane Huang et al. · 2020 · Solar and Stellar Astrophysics · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
There is mounting evidence that the composition and structure of planetary systems are intimately linked to their birth environments. During the past decade, several spectral surveys probed the chemistry of the earliest stages of star formation and of late planet-forming disks. However, very little is known about the chemistry of intermediate protostellar stages, i.e. Class I Young Stellar Objects (YSOs), where planet formation may have already begun. We present here the first results of a 3mm spectral survey performed with the IRAM-30m telescope to investigate the chemistry of a sample of seven Class I YSOs located in the Taurus star-forming region. These sources were selected to embrace th…

JWST/MIRI Observations of Amorphous Silicates in Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLASCristina A. Thomas, Michael S. P. Kelley, David E. Harker et al. · 2026 · Earth and Planetary Astrophysics · Résumé IA disponible
En bref
Le spectre JWST/MIRI de 3I/ATLAS favorise des silicates amorphes de type pyroxène, sans cristaux requis, suggérant une faible transformation thermique du matériau cométaire.

Determining elemental composition in laboratory meteorite ablation spectra through radiative transfer modelingA. Pisarčíková, J. Borovička, P. Matlovič · 2026 · Icarus (New York, N.Y. 1962) · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Laboratory simulations of meteor ablation provide a critical quantitative link between the chemical composition of meteoroids and their observed spectral features. In this work, we analyzed high-resolution Echelle spectra (wavelength range 380-780 nm) of 22 diverse meteorites from the dataset presented in our previous work (Matlovi\v{c} et al., 2024), representing the largest collection of laboratory meteor analogs to date. Using a radiative transfer model assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and accounting for self-absorption in optically thick plasma, we derived plasma parameters and elemental abundances for both major (Fe, Mg, Cr, Mn, Si, Na, Ni, Li, and K) and minor (Co, Cu, an…
