Seismoacoustic Analysis of a Falcon 9 Rocket Stage Re-Entry Over Central Europe on 19 February 2025
    P. Hupe, Christoph Pilger, J. Assink et al. · 2026 · Pure and Applied Geophysics · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

On 19 February 2025, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage re-entered the atmosphere over Ireland’s west coast. It produced a sustained fireball along its trajectory across the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, northern Germany, and western Poland. Seismic and infrasound stations in the Netherlands and Germany, as well as infrasound arrays in Sweden and Norway, recorded the event. We characterise the re-entry as a line source and reproduce the trajectory using the seismoacoustic observations of more than 80 stations. The majority of the stations detected two distinct signal arrivals. We investigate the detection pattern with varying time intervals between these signals across the station networks, b…

The May 2024 Geospace Superstorm and Its Impact on the Global Electric Circuit Worldwide
    J. Tacza, Gang Li, Shuai Fu et al. · 2026 · Journal of Space Weather and Space Climate · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

In May 2024, a sequence of intense solar eruptions—including multiple M- and X-class flares and several coronal mass ejections (CMEs)—from solar active regions 3663 and 3664 triggered one of the most extreme geomagnetic storms of Solar Cycle 25. The storm produced a minimum disturbance storm-time index (Dst) of –406 nT and a peak interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) magnitude of $\sim$70 nT at the first Lagrangian point (L1). This event also generated a large Forbush Decrease (FD) in galactic cosmic rays and a Ground-Level Enhancement (GLE) of solar energetic particles, offering a unique opportunity to assess solar–terrestrial coupling through the Global Electric Circuit (GEC). %We analyzed f…

Understanding space weather phenomena responsible for different impacts on spacecraft during the May 2024 extreme geomagnetic storm
    T. Nagatsuma, K. Sakaguchi, Y. Kubo · 2026 · Earth, Planets and Space · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

Extreme geomagnetic storms pose significant risks to spacecraft operations through enhanced particle radiation, geomagnetic disturbances, and thermospheric density variations. In this study, we comparatively analyze three extreme geomagnetic storms with minimum Dst indices below − 350 nT: October 29–31, 2003, November 20–22, 2003, and May 10–12, 2024. Using space- and ground-based observations, we examine the associated solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), interplanetary conditions, high-energy particle environments at geosynchronous orbit, and reported spacecraft impacts. Although the three storms exhibited comparable geomagnetic intensities, their solar and interplanetary drivers d…

Hint of an exocomet transit in the CHEOPS lightcurve of HD 172555
    F. Kiefer, V. Van Grootel, A. Lecavelier des Etangs et al. · 2023 · A&A 671, A25 (2023) · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

HD$\,$172555 is a young ($\sim$20$\,$Myr) A7V star surrounded by a 10$\,$au wide debris disk suspected to be replenished partly by collisions between large planetesimals. Small evaporating transiting bodies, exocomets, have also been detected in this system by spectroscopy. After $\beta\,$Pictoris, this is another example of a system possibly witnessing a phase of heavy bombardment of planetesimals. In such system, small bodies trace dynamical evolution processes. We aim at constraining their dust content by using transit photometry. We performed a 2-day-long photometric monitoring of HD$\,$172555 with the CHEOPS space telescope in order to detect shallow transits of exocomets with a typical…

Prompt emission of relativistic protons up to GeV energies from M6.4-class solar flare on July 17, 2023
Carlos Navia, Marcel Oliveira, Andre Nepomuceno · 2023 · Solar and Stellar Astrophysics · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

We show evidence of particle acceleration at GEV energies associated directly with protons from the prompt emission of a long-duration M6-class solar flare on July 17, 2023, rather than from protons acceleration by shocks from its associated Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), which erupted with a speed of 1342 km/s. Solar Energetic Particles (SEP) accelerated by the blast have reached Earth, up to an almost S3 (strong) category of a radiation storm on the NOAA scale. Also, we show a temporal correlation between the fast rising of GOES-16 proton and muon excess at ground level in the count rate of the New-Tupi muon detector at the central SAA region. A Monte Carlo spectral analysis based on muon ex…

Detection and Analysis of an Upward Jet‐Like Electrical Discharge Intercepting a High‐Altitude Research Aircraft
    T. Lang, A. Mezentsev, M. Quick et al. · 2026 · Geophysical Research Letters · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

During a 2023 field campaign, a NASA ER‐2 research aircraft intercepted an upward jet‐like electrical discharge at 20 km altitude over an intense tropical thunderstorm. This event was analyzed using airborne multispectral optical sensors, electric field mills, X‐band radar, passive microwave, and ground‐based radio networks. Optical observations revealed a streamer‐dominated discharge characterized by strong ultraviolet (∼340 nm) emissions and limited thermalization, explaining the lack of airframe damage. Radio observations indicated that the discharge was initiated by a narrow bipolar event near cloud top. Electric field measurements found that fields due to charge on the aircraft were clo…

GPS phase and amplitude scintillation at high latitudes during the extreme geomagnetic storm of May 2024
    P. Prikryl, A. McCaffrey, J. Weygand et al. · 2026 · Earth, Planets and Space · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

The May 2024 geomagnetic storm was the most intense in recent decades, significantly affecting the Earth magnetosphere and ionosphere. We investigate GPS amplitude and phase scintillation during the main and recovery phases of the storm using GPS receivers including the specialized scintillation receivers of the Canadian High Arctic Ionospheric Network (CHAIN). We primarily compute 30-s scintillation indices using GPS receivers sampling at a 50 Hz rate or higher, complemented by 1-Hz GPS receivers providing a proxy scintillation index. The occurrence of GPS scintillation is studied in the context of ionospheric convection observed by SuperDARN, horizontal equivalent ionospheric currents and …

Chondrules as fallout from vaporizing impacts in the solar nebula
Nick Choksi, Eugene Chiang, Harold C. Connolly Jr. et al. · 2020 · Earth and Planetary Astrophysics · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

We consider how chondrules, once-molten mm-sized spheres filling the oldest meteorites, may have formed as the thermally processed fallout from planetesimal collisions in the primordial solar nebula. We focus on the cloud of hot and dense silicate vapor released from a collision, and its expansion into cold and rarefied nebular hydrogen. Collisional particle debris, including chondrule precursors, are entrained by the cloud and melted by it, via gas conduction and radiation emitted by dust grains that condense out of the cloud. Conduction and radiation lock vapor, dust, and proto-chondrules to a common temperature, which falls as the cloud expands. Latent heat released by condensation slows …
