Gravitational atmospheric tides as a probe of Titan's interior: Application to Dragonfly
    Benjamin Charnay, Gabriel Tobie, Sébastien Lebonnois et al. · 2021 · A&A 658, A108 (2022) · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

Context: Saturn's massive gravity is expected to causes a tide in Titan's atmosphere, producing a surface pressure variation through the orbit of Titan and tidal winds in the troposphere. The future Dragonfly mission could analyse this exotic meteorological phenomenon. Aims: We analyse the effect of Saturn's tides on Titan's atmosphere and interior to determine how pressure measurements by Dragonfly could constrain Titan's interior. Methods: We model atmospheric tides with analytical calculations and with a 3D Global Climate Model (the IPSL-Titan GCM), including the tidal response of the interior. Results: We predict that the Love numbers of Titan's interior should verify 1 + Re(k2 - h2) ~ 0…

JWST molecular mapping and characterization of Enceladus' water plume feeding its torus
    G. L. Villanueva, H. B. Hammel, S. N. Milam et al. · 2023 · Astrophysique terrestre et planétaire · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

Enceladus is a prime target in the search for life in our solar system, having an active plume likely connected to a large liquid water subsurface ocean. Using the sensitive NIRSpec instrument onboard JWST, we searched for organic compounds and characterized the plume's composition and structure. The observations directly sample the fluorescence emissions of H2O and reveal an extraordinarily extensive plume (up to 10,000 km or 40 Enceladus radii) at cryogenic temperatures (25 K) embedded in a large bath of emission originating from Enceladus' torus. Intriguingly, the observed outgassing rate (300 kg/s) is similar to that derived from close-up observations with Cassini 15 years ago, and the t…

Understanding the trans-Neptunian Solar system: Reconciling the results of serendipitous stellar occultations and the inferences from the cratering record
Andrew Shannon, Alain Doressoundiram, Françoise Roques et al. · 2021 · Astrophysique terrestre et planétaire · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

The most pristine remnants of the Solar system's planet formation epoch orbit the Sun beyond Neptune, the small bodies of the trans-Neptunian object populations. The bulk of the mass is in ~100 km objects, but objects at smaller sizes have undergone minimal collisional processing, with New Horizons recently revealing that ~20 km effective diameter body (486958) Arrokoth appears to be a primordial body, not a collisional fragment. This indicates bodies at these sizes (and perhaps smaller) retain a record of how they were formed, and are the most numerous record of that epoch. However, such bodies are impractical to find by optical surveys due to their very low brightnesses. Their presence can…

The Rossiter-McLaughlin effect reloaded: Probing the 3D spin-orbit geometry, differential stellar rotation, and the spatially-resolved stellar spectrum of star-planet systems
    H. M. Cegla, C. Lovis, V. Bourrier et al. · 2016 · A&A 588, A127 (2016) · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

When a planet transits its host star, it blocks regions of the stellar surface from view; this causes a distortion of the spectral lines and a change in the line-of-sight (LOS) velocities, known as the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect. Since the LOS velocities depend, in part, on the stellar rotation, the RM waveform is sensitive to the star-planet alignment (which provides information on the system's dynamical history). We present a new RM modelling technique that directly measures the spatially-resolved stellar spectrum behind the planet. This is done by scaling the continuum flux of the (HARPS) spectra by the transit light curve, and then subtracting the in- from the out-of-transit spectra…

Absolute densities in exoplanetary systems: photodynamical modelling of Kepler-138
    J. M. Almenara, R. F. Díaz, C. Dorn et al. · 2018 · Astrophysique terrestre et planétaire · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

In favourable conditions, the density of transiting planets in multiple systems can be determined from photometry data alone. Dynamical information can be extracted from light curves, providing modelling is done self-consistently, i.e. using a photodynamical model, which simulates the individual photometric observations instead of the more generally used transit times. We apply this methodology to the Kepler-138 planetary system. The derived planetary bulk densities are a factor of 2 more precise than previous determinations, and we find a discrepancy in the stellar bulk density with respect to a previous study. This leads, in turn, to a discrepancy in the determination of masses and radii o…

The rings of (2060) Chiron: Evidence of an evolving system
    C. L. Pereira, F. Braga-Ribas, B. Sicardy et al. · 2025 · ApJL 992 L19 (2025) · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

The centaur (2060) Chiron has long been a candidate for hosting material in orbit, based on occultation and photometric and spectroscopic data. Here, we present a multichord stellar occultation observed on 2023 September 10 UT that reveals new and complex structures surrounding Chiron. High-cadence light curves show multiple secondary events that are best explained (when compared with a multishell interpretation) with a system of three confined rings located at average radii of 273, 325, and 438 km, the outermost of which lies beyond Chiron's Roche limit. The rings appear coplanar, with a mean pole orientation of {\lambda} = 151{\deg} +/- 4{\deg} and \b{eta} = 20{\deg} +/- 6{\deg}. A broader…

RV-detected planets around M dwarfs: Challenges for core accretion models
    Martin Schlecker, Remo Burn, Silvia Sabotta et al. · 2022 · A&A 664, A180 (2022) · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

Planet formation is sensitive to the conditions in protoplanetary disks, for which scaling laws as a function of stellar mass are known. We aim to test whether the observed population of planets around low-mass stars can be explained by these trends, or if separate formation channels are needed. We address this question by confronting a state-of-the-art planet population synthesis model with a sample of planets around M dwarfs observed by the HARPS and CARMENES radial velocity (RV) surveys. To account for detection biases, we performed injection and retrieval experiments on the actual RV data to produce synthetic observations of planets that we simulated following the core accretion paradigm…

The influence of cold Jupiters in the formation of close-in planets. I. planetesimal transport
Sergio Best, Antranik A. Sefilian, Cristobal Petrovich · 2023 · Astrophysique terrestre et planétaire · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

The formation of a cold Jupiter (CJ) is expected to quench the influx of pebbles and the migration of cores interior to its orbit, thus limiting the efficiency of rocky planet formation either by pebble accretion and/or orbital migration. Observations, however, show that the presence of outer CJs ( >1 au and >0.3 Jupiter masses) correlates with the presence of inner Super Earths (at <1 au). This observation may simply be a result of an enhanced initial reservoir of solids in the nebula required to form a CJ or a yet-to-be-determined mechanism assisted by the presence of the CJ. In this work, we focus on the latter alternative and study the orbital transport of planetesimals interior to a CJ …
