DelayDiffEq: Generating Delay Differential Equation Solvers via Recursive Embedding of Ordinary Differential Equation Solvers
David Widmann, Chris Rackauckas · 2022 · Analyse numérique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

Traditional solvers for delay differential equations (DDEs) are designed around only a single method and do not effectively use the infrastructure of their more-developed ordinary differential equation (ODE) counterparts. In this work we present DelayDiffEq, a Julia package for numerically solving delay differential equations (DDEs) which leverages the multitude of numerical algorithms in OrdinaryDiffEq for solving both stiff and non-stiff ODEs, and manages to solve challenging stiff DDEs. We describe how compiling the ODE integrator within itself, and accounting for discontinuity propagation, leads to a design that is effective for DDEs while using all of the ODE internals. We highlight som…

Low-complexity computation of plate eigenmodes with Vekua approximations and the Method of Particular Solutions
Gilles Chardon, Laurent Daudet · 2013 · Analyse numérique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

This paper extends the Method of Particular Solutions (MPS) to the computation of eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes of plates. Specific approximation schemes are developed, with plane waves (MPS-PW) or Fourier-Bessel functions (MPS-FB). This framework also requires a suitable formulation of the boundary conditions. Numerical tests, on two plates with various boundary conditions, demonstrate that the proposed approach provides competitive results with standard numerical schemes such as the Finite Element Method, at reduced complexity, and with large flexibility in the implementation choices.

A robust solution strategy for the Cahn-Larché equations
Erlend Storvik, Jakub Wiktor Both, Jan Martin Nordbotten et al. · 2022 · Analyse numérique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

In this paper we propose a solution strategy for the Cahn-Larch\'e equations, which is a model for linearized elasticity in a medium with two elastic phases that evolve subject to a Ginzburg-Landau type energy functional. The system can be seen as a combination of the Cahn-Hilliard regularized interface equation and linearized elasticity, and is non-linearly coupled, has a fourth order term that comes from the Cahn-Hilliard subsystem, and is non-convex and nonlinear in both the phase-field and displacement variables. We propose a novel semi-implicit discretization in time that uses a standard convex-concave splitting method of the nonlinear double-well potential, as well as special treatment…

A Computationally Efficient Vectorized Implementation of Localizing Gradient Damage Method in MATLAB
Subrato Sarkar · 2023 · Analyse numérique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

In this work, a recently developed fracture modeling method called localizing gradient damage method (LGDM) is implemented in MATLAB. MATLAB is well-known in the computational research community for its simple and easy-to-learn coding interface. As a result, MATLAB is generally preferred for the initial development (prototyping) of computational models by researchers. However, MATLAB-developed codes are seldom used for large-scale simulations (after initial development is complete) due to their computational inefficiency. Hence, a computationally efficient implementation of LGDM using MATLAB vectorization is presented in this work. The choice of LGDM (as the fracture modeling method) is base…

An overview on deep learning-based approximation methods for partial differential equations
Christian Beck, Martin Hutzenthaler, Arnulf Jentzen et al. · 2020 · Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. B 28 (2023), no. 6, 3697-3746 · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

It is one of the most challenging problems in applied mathematics to approximatively solve high-dimensional partial differential equations (PDEs). Recently, several deep learning-based approximation algorithms for attacking this problem have been proposed and tested numerically on a number of examples of high-dimensional PDEs. This has given rise to a lively field of research in which deep learning-based methods and related Monte Carlo methods are applied to the approximation of high-dimensional PDEs. In this article we offer an introduction to this field of research by revisiting selected mathematical results related to deep learning approximation methods for PDEs and reviewing the main ide…

Compatible finite element methods for geophysical fluid dynamics
    Colin J. Cotter · 2023 · Analyse numérique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

This article surveys research on the application of compatible finite element methods to large scale atmosphere and ocean simulation. Compatible finite element methods extend Arakawa's C-grid finite difference scheme to the finite element world. They are constructed from a discrete de Rham complex, which is a sequence of finite element spaces which are linked by the operators of differential calculus. The use of discrete de Rham complexes to solve partial differential equations is well established, but in this article we focus on the specifics of dynamical cores for simulating weather, oceans and climate. The most important consequence of the discrete de Rham complex is the Hodge-Helmholtz d…

Provably stable numerical method for the anisotropic diffusion equation in toroidally confined magnetic fields
Dean Muir, Kenneth Duru, Matthew Hole et al. · 2023 · Analyse numérique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

We present a novel numerical method for solving the anisotropic diffusion equation in toroidally confined magnetic fields which is efficient, accurate and provably stable. The continuous problem is written in terms of a derivative operator for the perpendicular transport and a linear operator, obtained through field line tracing, for the parallel transport. We derive energy estimates of the solution of the continuous initial boundary value problem. A discrete formulation is presented using operator splitting in time with the summation by parts finite difference approximation of spatial derivatives for the perpendicular diffusion operator. Weak penalty procedures are derived for implementing …

    Convergence Analysis for Nonlinear GMRES
Yunhui He · 2025 · Analyse numérique · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

In this work, we revisit nonlinear generalized minimal residual method (NGMRES) applied to nonlinear problems. NGMRES is used to accelerate the convergence of fixed-point iterations, which can substantially improve the performance of the underlying fixed-point iterations. We consider NGMRES with a finite window size $m$, denoted as NGMRES($m$). However, there is no convergence analysis for NGMRES($m$) applied to nonlinear systems. We prove that for general $m>0$, the residuals of NGMRES($m$) converge r-linearly under some conditions. For $m=0$, we prove that the residuals of NGMRES(0) converge q-linearly.
