Specification tests for normal/gamma and stable/gamma stochastic frontier models based on empirical transformsC. Papadimitriou, S. Meintanis, B. Andrade et al. · 2022 · Econometrics and Statistics · cité 1 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Goodness--of--fit tests for the distribution of the composed error term in a Stochastic Frontier Model (SFM) are suggested. The focus is on the case of a normal/gamma SFM and the heavy--tailed stable/gamma SFM. In the first case the moment generating function is used as tool while in the latter case the characteristic function of the error term is employed. In both cases our test statistics are formulated as weighted integrals of properly standardized data. The new normal/gamma test is consistent, and is shown to have an intrinsic relation to moment--based tests. The finite--sample behavior of resampling versions of both tests is investigated by Monte Carlo simulation, while several real--da…

Moment Diagnostics and Quasi-Maximum Likelihood Estimation for the Stochastic Frontier ModelA. Papadopoulos, Christopher F. Parmeter · 2019 · Social Science Research Network · cité 4 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
The distributional specifications for the composite regression error term most often used in Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) are inherently bounded as regards their skewness and excess kurtosis coefficients. These bounds provide simple diagnostic tools and model selection/rejection criteria for empirical studies which appear to have been overlooked by practitioners. We derive general expressions for the skewness and excess kurtosis of the composed error term in the stochastic frontier model based on the ratio of standard deviations of the two separate error components as well as theoretical ranges for the most popular empirical specifications. Simulation results are presented to detail th…

Stationary Points for Parametric Stochastic Frontier ModelsW. Horrace, Ian A. Wright · 2019 · Journal of business & economic statistics · cité 27 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Abstract Stationary point results on the normal–half-normal stochastic frontier model are generalized using the theory of the Dirac delta, and distribution-free conditions are established to ensure a stationary point in the likelihood as the variance of the inefficiency distribution goes to zero. Stability of the stationary point and “wrong skew” results are derived or simulated for common parametric assumptions on the model. We discuss identification and extensions to more general stochastic frontier models.

Robust stochastic frontier analysis: a Student’s t-half normal model with application to highway maintenance costs in EnglandP. Wheat, A. Stead, W. Greene · 2019 · Journal of Productivity Analysis · cité 49 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
The presence of outliers in the data has implications for stochastic frontier analysis, and indeed any performance analysis methodology, because they may lead to imprecise parameter estimates and, crucially, lead to an exaggerated spread of efficiency predictions. In this paper we replace the normal distribution for the noise term in the standard stochastic frontier model with a Student’s t distribution, which generalises the normal distribution by adding a shape parameter governing the degree of kurtosis. This has the advantages of introducing flexibility in the heaviness of the tails, which can be determined by the data, as well as containing the normal distribution as a limiting case, and…

Penalized sieve estimation of zero‐inefficiency stochastic frontiersJun Cai, W. Horrace, Christopher F. Parmeter · 2023 · Journal of applied econometrics · cité 1 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Stochastic frontier models for cross‐sectional data typically assume that the one‐sided distribution of firm‐level inefficiency is continuous. However, it may be reasonable to hypothesize that inefficiency is continuous except for a discrete mass at zero capturing fully efficient firms (zero‐inefficiency). We propose a sieve‐type density estimator for such a mixture distribution in a nonparametric stochastic frontier setting under a unimodality‐at‐zero assumption. Consistency, rates of convergence and asymptotic normality of the estimators are established, as well as a test of the zero‐inefficiency hypothesis. Simulations and two applications are provided to demonstrate the practicality of t…

Model uncertainty and efficiency measurement in stochastic frontier analysis with generalized errorsKamil Makieła, Błażej Mazur · 2022 · Journal of Productivity Analysis · cité 14 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Advanced efficiency measurement methods usually fall within Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA), Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), or their derivatives. Although SFA has some theoretical advantages, it has been criticized for relying on arbitrary and potentially restrictive assumptions about model specification. One strand of the literature suggests the use of nonparametric SF models to cope with the issue. We follow an alternative path and demonstrate that it is possible to deal with specification uncertainty and potentially restrictive assumptions while maintaining the advantages of the parametric approach. First, we develop a flexible stochastic model based on generalized t and generalized …

Density deconvolution with Laplace errors and unknown varianceJun Cai, W. Horrace, Christopher F. Parmeter · 2021 · Journal of Productivity Analysis · cité 6 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
We consider density deconvolution with zero-mean Laplace noise in the context of an error component regression model. We adapt the minimax deconvolution methods of Meister (2006) to allow estimation of the unknown noise variance. We propose a semi-uniformly consistent estimator for an ordinary-smooth target density and a modified "variance truncation device” for the unknown noise variance. We provide a simulation study and practical guidance for the choice of smoothness parameters of the ordinary-smooth target density. We apply restricted versions of our estimator to a stochastic frontier model of US banks and to a measurement error model of daily saturated fat intake.
