Inefficient markets provide opportunities for investors to consistently outperform the market. In the case of sports betting markets, we conducted a study to demonstrate the existence of inefficiencies and developed a betting algorithm that generates above-market returns for various sports leagues including the NFL, NBA, NCAAF, NCAAB, and WNBA. To formulate our successful betting strategy, we collected and thoroughly examined a unique dataset of bets. Additionally, we created a non-parametric win probability model that allowed us to identify positive expected value situations. This model helped us pinpoint favorable betting opportunities where the potential winnings outweighed the risks. The timing of our research is particularly relevant as the United States Supreme Court recently repealed the federal ban on sports betting. This decision has opened up new possibilities in the rapidly growing sports betting industry. As such, our findings hold significant importance for both individual bettors and industry professionals looking to capitalize on these inefficiencies. Overall, our study provides compelling evidence that inefficiencies exist within sports betting markets. By leveraging our algorithm and win probability model, investors can potentially achieve higher returns compared to traditional market investments. With the increasing popularity and legalization of sports betting in many regions, this research serves as a valuable resource for individuals seeking an edge in this evolving industry.
