Methodology
The research paper utilized daily closing prices from January 1st 2013 until December 31st 2017 for both Bitcoin (BTC) and Chinese Yuan (CNY). The data was then divided into two subsets; one containing only BTC/CNY exchange rate information while the other contained additional variables including gold prices (XAU), S&P 500 index (SP500), Dow Jones Industrial Average index (DJIA) and crude oil futures contract West Texas Intermediate (WTI).
Wavelet analysis was used on these datasets in order to explore how each factor affects Bitcoin’s price movements over different timescales ranging from days up through months or even years depending on the frequency chosen by researchers. This allowed them to identify correlations between various factors at different frequencies which could then be used as potential drivers for future price movements or trends in either direction.
Findings
The results showed that there were significant correlations between all five variables studied at some level across all frequencies tested indicating that each factor plays some role in influencing price movements over time regardless if it is short term or long term changes being observed.
