Résumé scientifique

A century of fire suppression has made historically fire-adapted forests across the western U.S. denser and dominated by fire-intolerant trees, leading to severe fires. Fuel treatments aim to reduce wildfire impact and restore fire-adapted forests. Ecological theory suggests these objectives need not align: protecting the existing, fire-maladapted stand may prevent fire-tolerant seedling recruitment. Using Forest Inventory and Analysis data on 81,621 trees and 41,328 seedlings across 11 western U.S. states, we show that fuel treatments increase tree survival, but benefits are largest for fire-intolerant trees, fade within nine years, and come with no seedling composition shift towards fire-tolerant species. Concluding, fuel reduction reduces wildfire impacts but does not restore fire-adapted forests. Without changes in treatment design, long-term resilience will require repeated intervention.

A Multi-Modal Wildfire Prediction and Personalized Early-Warning System Based on a Novel Machine Learning Framework

Wildfires are increasingly impacting the environment, human health and safety. Among the top 20 California wildfires, those in 2020-2021 burned more acres than the last century combined. California's 2018 wildfire season caused damages of $148.5 billion. Among millions of impacted people, those living with disabilities (around 15% of the world population) are disproportionately impacted due to inadequate means of alerts. In this project, a multi-modal wildfire prediction and personalized early warning system has been developed based on an advanced machine learning architecture. Sensor data from the Environmental Protection Agency and historical wildfire data from 2012 to 2018 have been compi…

Habitat fragmentation affects climate adaptation in a forest herb
Frederik Van Daele, Olivier Honnay, Steven Janssens et al. · 2023 · Populations and Evolution · cité 14 fois · Résumé IA disponible

Climate change and increased drought frequencies are expected to have a major impact on forest herb persistence. The adaptive capacity of forest herbs will depend on their long standing imprints of local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity. To evaluate how local adaptation to habitat fragmentation affects climate adaptation we quantified a wide range of traits in a common garden experiment of Primula elatior. Specifically, we disentangled the relative contribution of climate, habitat fragmentation, and drought stress on trait variation of the germination lag time, germination rate, growth rate, root:shoot ratio, specific leaf area, stomatal density, glandular trichome density, flower phenol…

Analysis of Deep Learning Architectures and Efficacy of Detecting Forest Fires

The aim of this research is to review the state of computer vision as applied to combatting forest fires. My motivation to research this topic comes from the urgency with which new participants and stakeholders require guidance in this field. One of these new stakeholder groups are practitioners of machine learning that lack domain expertise. Introducing these new entrants to domain specific datasets and methods is critical to supporting this aim as general computer vision datasets are insufficient to support specialized research initiatives. The overarching aim of the research is to introduce datasets and methods to make them more accessible to the community.

Assessment of Physical Properties of Water Repellent Soils

This note presents a comprehensive characterization of physical and mechanical properties of water repellent (hydrophobic) soil collected from Cleveland National Forest in California immediately after the Holy Fire, 2018, and delineates comparisons with chemically induced hydrophobic sand in the laboratory. Hydrophobicity is a particle surface characteristic that governs different levels of attraction between water molecules and solid particles. Wildfires can cause different levels of hydrophobicity in shallow soil layers based on fire severity, vegetation, and chemical structure of the soil. Natural and chemically induced regular and hydrophobic sands are characterized by grain size distrib…

Wildfire Autonomous Response and Prediction Using Cellular Automata (WARP-CA)

Wildfires pose a severe challenge to ecosystems and human settlements, exacerbated by climate change and environmental factors. Traditional wildfire modeling, while useful, often fails to adapt to the rapid dynamics of such events. This report introduces the (Wildfire Autonomous Response and Prediction Using Cellular Automata) WARP-CA model, a novel approach that integrates terrain generation using Perlin noise with the dynamism of Cellular Automata (CA) to simulate wildfire spread. We explore the potential of Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) to manage wildfires by simulating autonomous agents, such as UAVs and UGVs, within a collaborative framework. Our methodology combines world s…

Reconfiguration of Amazon's Connectivity in the Climate System
Adam Giammarese, Jacob Brown, Nishant Malik · 2023 · Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics · cité 4 fois · Pas encore résumé

With the recent increase in deforestation, forest fires, and regional temperatures, the concerns around the rapid and complete collapse of the Amazon rainforest ecosystem have heightened. The thresholds of deforestation and the temperature increase required for such a catastrophic event are still uncertain. However, our analysis presented here shows that signatures of changing Amazon are already apparent in historical climate data sets. Here, we extend the methods of climate network analysis and apply them to study the temporal evolution of the connectivity between the Amazon rainforest and the global climate system. We observe that the Amazon rainforest is losing short-range connectivity an…

Modeling the impact of spatial oxygen heterogeneity on radiolytic oxygen depletion during FLASH radiotherapy
Edward Taylor, Richard P. Hill, Daniel Letourneau · 2022 · Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2022 · cité 16 fois · Résumé IA disponible

It has been postulated that the delivery of radiotherapy at ultra-high dose rates ("FLASH") reduces normal tissue toxicities by depleting them of oxygen. The fraction of normal tissue and cancer cells surviving radiotherapy depends on dose and oxygen levels in an exponential manner and even a very small fraction of tissue at low oxygen levels can determine radiotherapy response. The effect of FLASH on radiation-induced normal and tumour tissue cell killing was studied by simulating oxygen diffusion, metabolism, and radiolytic oxygen depletion over domains with simulated capillary architectures. Two architectural models were used: 1.) randomly distributed capillaries and 2.) capillaries formi…
