Résumé scientifique
We combine JWST NIRSpec and Keck KCWI observations to construct a contiguous 2D map of M87's stellar kinematics spanning three decades in projected radius, from ${\sim}10$ pc to ${\sim}10$ kpc, and measure the mass of its central supermassive black hole. The innermost stellar kinematic measurements probe projected radii as small as ${\sim}3$% of the black hole's sphere of influence radius, or approximately 30,000 Schwarzschild radii. The NIRSpec spectra within $R < 0.45''$ are contaminated by quasiperiodic "wiggle" artifacts. We develop hyphen, which uses detector spectral traces to predict how the wiggle frequency varies with wavelength, then fits and subtracts the wiggle pattern from each spectrum in each exposure before combining the data. The cleaned spectra reveal a pronounced central rise in stellar velocity dispersion and $h_4$. Triaxial Schwarzschild stellar orbit modeling with the TriOS code, fitting ${\sim}$5,000 kinematic constraints across 618 spatial bins from JWST and Keck, yields a black hole mass of $M_{\mathrm{BH}}=(5.38 \pm 0.13\pm 0.22)\times10^9\,M_\odot$. This result is consistent with our prior KCWI-only determination but with the statistical uncertainty reduced by a factor of 2-3, now subdominant to the systematic uncertainty in the distance ($D$) to M87. Our inferred mass-to-distance ratio is $θ_g=GM_{\mathrm{BH}}/(c^2 D) = 3.16 \pm 0.08\, μ$as, whose 90% credible interval overlaps with that obtained from the multi-epoch Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) analysis, providing a robust and independent prior for future EHT studies.

JWST CEERS & JADES Active Galaxies at z = 4-7 Violate the Local $M_\bullet-M_\star$ Relation at $>3σ$: Implications for Low-Mass Black Holes and Seeding ModelsFabio Pacucci, Bao Nguyen, Stefano Carniani et al. · 2023 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · Résumé IA disponible
JWST is revolutionizing our understanding of the high-z Universe by expanding the black hole horizon, looking farther and to smaller masses, and revealing the stellar light of their hosts. New detections of high-z systems offer unprecedented insights into the formation of the first black holes and their early co-evolution with galaxies. By examining JWST galaxies at z=4-7 that host H$\alpha$-detected black holes, we investigate (i) the high-z $M_\bullet-M_\star$ relation and (ii) the black hole mass distribution, especially in its low-mass range ($M_\bullet\lesssim10^{6.5} M_\odot$). With a detailed statistical analysis, our findings conclusively reveal a high-z $M_\bullet-M_\star$ relation …

UNCOVER: The growth of the first massive black holes from JWST/NIRSpec -- spectroscopic confirmation of an X-ray luminous AGN at z=10.1Andy D. Goulding, Jenny E. Greene, David J. Setton et al. · 2023 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · Résumé IA disponible
The James Webb Space Telescope is now detecting early black holes (BHs) as they transition from "seeds" to supermassive BHs. Recently Bogdan et al. (2023) reported the detection of an X-ray luminous supermassive black hole, UHZ-1, with a photometric redshift at z > 10. Such an extreme source at this very high redshift provides new insights on seeding and growth models for BHs given the short time available for formation and growth. Harnessing the exquisite sensitivity of JWST/NIRSpec, here we report the spectroscopic confirmation of UHZ-1 at z = 10.073 +/- 0.002. We find that the NIRSpec/Prism spectrum is typical of recently discovered z~10 galaxies, characterized primarily by star-formation…

A Kiloparsec-Scale Stellar Cavity in the Center of Abell402-BCG May be Caused by Dynamic Interactions with an Ultramassive Black HoleMichael McDonald, Gourav Khullar, David Lagattuta et al. · 2026 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · Résumé IA disponible
We present new observations from JWST NIRCam that reveal a striking kpc-wide cavity in the stellar distribution of the central galaxy in the cluster Abell402. Supporting data from HST allow us to rule out extinction due to dust as an explanation and, instead, suggest that this is a localized depression in the stellar density field corresponding to ~2x10^9 Msun in missing stars within a volume of 0.5kpc^3. On larger scales, both the JWST and HST data show evidence for a 2.2kpc flattened core in the stellar distribution (on which the smaller-scale cavity is superimposed), which implies the presence of a central ultra-massive black hole with M_BH = 6 +/- 4 x10^10 Msun. We report evidence for a …

Detection of the Low-Stellar Mass Host Galaxy of a $z\sim6.25$ quasar with JWSTMeredith Stone, Jianwei Lyu, George H. Rieke et al. · 2023 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · Résumé IA disponible
We characterize the stellar mass of J2239+0207, a z~6.25 sub-Eddington quasar (M_1450=-24.6), using dedicated JWST/NIRCam medium-band observations of a nearby PSF star to remove the central point source and reveal the underlying galaxy emission. We detect the host galaxy in two bands longward of the Balmer break, obtaining a stellar mass of ~10^10 M_sun, more than an order of magnitude less than this quasar's existing measured [C II] dynamical mass. We additionally calculate the mass of J2239+0207's central supermassive black hole using JWST/NIRSpec IFU observations, and determine that the black hole is ~15 times more massive than predicted by the local M_BH-M* relation, similar to many high…

Spectral analysis of a parsec-scale jet in M87: Observational constraint on the magnetic field strengths in the jetHyunwook Ro, Motoki Kino, Bong Won Sohn et al. · 2023 · High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena · Résumé IA disponible
Because of its proximity and the large size of its black hole, M87 is one of the best targets for studying the launching mechanism of active galactic nucleus jets. Currently, magnetic fields are considered to be an essential factor in the launching and accelerating of the jet. However, current observational estimates of the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet are limited to the innermost part of the jet or to HST-1. No attempt has yet been made to measure the magnetic field strength in between. We aim to infer the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet out to a distance of several thousand $r_s$ by tracking the distance-dependent changes in the synchrotron spectrum of the jet from high-re…

The Redshift Evolution of the $M_\bullet-M_\star$ Relation for JWST's Supermassive Black Holes at $z > 4$Fabio Pacucci, Abraham Loeb · 2024 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · Résumé IA disponible
JWST has detected many overmassive galactic systems at $z > 4$, where the mass of the black hole, $M_\bullet$, is $10-100$ times larger than expected from local relations, given the host's stellar mass, $M_\star$. This Letter presents a model to describe these overmassive systems in the high-$z$ Universe. We suggest that the black hole mass is the main driver of high-$z$ star formation quenching. SMBHs globally impact their high-$z$ galaxies because their hosts are physically small, and the black holes have duty cycles close to unity at $z > 4$. In this regime, we assume that black hole mass growth is regulated by the quasar's output, while stellar mass growth is quenched by it and uncorrela…

UNCOVER: A NIRSpec Identification of a Broad Line AGN at z = 8.50Vasily Kokorev, Seiji Fujimoto, Ivo Labbe et al. · 2023 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · Résumé IA disponible
Deep observations with JWST have revealed an emerging population of red point-like sources that could provide a link between the postulated supermassive black hole seeds and observed quasars. In this work we present a JWST/NIRSpec spectrum from the JWST Cycle 1 UNCOVER Treasury survey, of a massive accreting black hole at $z=8.50$, displaying a clear broad-line component as inferred from the H$\beta$ line with FWHM = $3439\pm413$ km s$^{-1}$, typical of the broad line region of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The AGN nature of this object is further supported by high ionization, as inferred from emission lines, and a point-source morphology. We compute the black hole mass of log$_{10}(M_{\…

Is GN-z11 powered by a super-Eddington massive black hole?Maulik Bhatt, Simona Gallerani, Andrea Ferrara et al. · 2024 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · Résumé IA disponible
Observations of $z \sim 6$ quasars powered by super-massive black holes (SMBHs, $M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^{8-10}\, M_\odot$) challenge our current understanding of early black hole formation and evolution. The advent of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has enabled the study of massive black holes (MBHs, $M_{\rm BH}\sim 10^{6-7} \ \mathrm{M}_\odot$) up to $z\sim 11$, thus bridging the properties of $z\sim 6$ quasars to their ancestors. JWST spectroscopic observations of GN-z11, a well-known $z=10.6$ star forming galaxy, have been interpreted with the presence of a super-Eddington (Eddington ratio $\equiv \,\lambda_{\rm Edd}\sim 5.5$) accreting MBH. To test this hypothesis we use a zoom-in cosm…
