Experimental evidence for quantum Brownian motion in electron-metal decoherence
Auteurs : Wayne Cheng-Wei Huang, Zilin Chen, Herman Batelaan
Résumé scientifique
Feynman once remarked that the double-slit experiment has in its heart the only mystery of quantum mechanics. Arguably, the scientific significance of double-slit experiments lies in motional decoherence and the mechanism behind it. Decoherence of motional states underpins our understanding of quantum-to-classical transition. It is also central to the operation of miniaturized quantum electron devices and poses a resolution limit for electron microscopes. In this work, we provide experimental evidence for the critical role of quantum Brownian motion in electron motional decoherence. We demonstrate, for the first time, clear signatures of electron-metal decoherence and its continuous tunability. Our experiment concludes a two-decade long search for experimental realization of the Anglin-Paz-Zurek proposal, establishing electron-microchannel systems as viable open quantum platforms for free-electron quantum optics. The quantitative agreement between experiment and theory further paves the way for testing the Caldeira-Leggett quantum dissipation theory with free electrons.

Experimental test of decoherence theory using electron matter wavesPeter J. Beierle, Li-Yun Zhang, H. Batelaan · 2017 · New Journal of Physics · cité 23 fois · Pas encore résumé
Experimental test of decoherence theory using electron matter waves mesure la décohérence d’électrons libres près de surfaces métalliques et semi-conductrices en confrontant les résultats à des modèles.
Résumé scientifique
A controlled decoherence environment is studied experimentally by free electron interaction with semiconducting and metallic plates. The results are compared with physical models based on decoherence theory to investigate the quantum-classical transition. The experiment is consistent with decoherence theory and rules out established Coulomb interaction models in favor of plasmonic excitation models. In contrast to previous decoherence experiments, the present experiment is sensitive to the onset of decoherence.

Quantum decoherence by Coulomb interaction étudie expérimentalement la décohérence d’électrons libres près de surfaces métalliques et semi-conductrices avec un interféromètre biprisme.
Résumé scientifique
The performance of modern quantum devices in communication, metrology or microscopy relies on the quantum–classical interaction which is generally described by the theory of decoherence. Despite the high relevance for long coherence times in quantum electronics, decoherence mechanisms mediated by the Coulomb force are not well understood yet and several competing theoretical models exist. Here, we present an experimental study of the Coulomb-induced decoherence of free electrons in a superposition state in a biprism electron interferometer close to a semiconducting and metallic surface. The decoherence was determined through a contrast loss at different beam path separations, surface distanc…

Measuring Decoherence due to Quantum Vacuum Fluctuations.
The interaction of a particle with vacuum fluctuations-which theoretically exist even in the complete absence of matter-can lead to observable irreversible decoherence if it were possible to switch on and off the particle charge suddenly. We compute the leading order decoherence effect for such a scenario and propose an experimental setup for its detection. Such a measurement might provide further insights into the nature of vacuum fluctuations and a novel precision test for the decoherence theory.

Résumé scientifique
We discuss the various manifestations of quantum decoherence in the forms of dephasing, entanglement with the environment, and revelation of "which-path" information. As a specific example, we consider an electron interference experiment. The coupling of the coherent electrons to the quantized electromagnetic field illustrates all of these versions of decoherence. This decoherence has two equivalent interpretations, in terms of photon emission or in terms of Aharonov-Bohm phase fluctuations. We consider the case when the coherent electrons are coupled to photons in a squeezed vacuum state. The time-averaged result is increased decoherence. However, if only electrons which are emitted during …

Résumé scientifique
Open system dynamics of an electron is studied in the presence of radiation field, confined between two parallel conducting pates. It has been suggested in previous works that the quantized zero-point modes of this field lead to finite decoherence effects, possibly due to the Casimir force. However, in this work it is shown that the decoherence found in previous works is due to the sudden switching on of the system-environment interaction and due to the acceleration of the electron enforced by the background paths whose superposition was analyzed. The work discusses important theoretical aspects of the setup and shows that while coherence might be lost due to bremsstrahlung induced by an ext…

Decoherence and recoherence from vacuum fluctuations near a conducting plate relie la visibilité des franges à la position et à l’orientation près d’une plaque conductrice.
Résumé scientifique
The interaction between particles and the electromagnetic field induces decoherence generating a small suppression of fringes in an interference experiment. We show that if a double-slit-like experiment is performed in the vicinity of a conducting plane, the fringe visibility depends on the position (and orientation) of the experiment relative to the conductor's plane. This phenomenon is due to the change in the structure of vacuum induced by the conductor and is closely related to the Casimir effect. We estimate the fringe visibility both for charged and for neutral particles with a permanent dipole moment. The presence of the conductor may tend to increase decoherence in some cases and to …

Levitating charged particles in ultra-high vacuum provides a preeminent platform for quantum information processing, for quantum-enhanced force and torque sensing, for probing physics beyond the standard model, and for high-mass tests of the quantum superposition principle. Existing setups range from single atomic ions, to ion chains and crystals, to charged molecules and nanoparticles. Future technological applications of such quantum systems will be crucially affected by fluctuating electric fields emanating from nearby electrodes, which interact with the levitated particles' monopole and higher charge moments. In this article, we provide a theoretical toolbox for describing how the rotati…

Dephasing due to semi-conductor charging masks decoherence in electron-wall systemsZ. Chen, H. Batelaan · 2020 · Europhysics letters · cité 9 fois · Pas encore résumé
Dephasing due to semi-conductor charging masks decoherence in electron-wall systems attribue la perte de contraste à une déphasage par charges locales, qui peut masquer la décohérence.
Résumé scientifique
In the interaction between a quantum mechanical electron wave and a wall, loss of interference contrast is observed. It is of general interest to identify the mechanism and categorize its nature as dephasing or decoherence. Decoherence is of fundamental importance for the transition between the classical and quantum boundary, while dephasing is often an experimental detriment that needs to be understood and overcome. We find that the loss of contrast is attributed to a local charge distribution induced by secondary emission: a dephasing mechanism. This mechanism is expected to be present for many materials, is clearly visible for copper oxide, and can mask decoherence mechanisms. The local c…

Résumé scientifique
The quantum properties of matter and radiation can be leveraged to surpass classical limits of sensing and detection. Quantum optics does so by creating and measuring nonclassical light. However, better performance requires higher photon-number states, which are challenging to generate and detect. Here, we combine photons and free electrons to solve the problem of generating and detecting high-number states well beyond those reachable with light alone and further show that an unprecedented level of sensitivity and resolution is gained based on the measurement of free-electron currents after suitably designed electron–light interactions. Our enabling ingredient is the strong electron–light co…
