Résumé scientifique

Wigner-negative states of light are key resources for quantum advantage in continuous-variable optical quantum computing. They can be produced probabilistically via frequency conversion and photon detection, or deterministically by exploiting the single-photon nonlinearity of a quantum emitter. Here, we generate such Wigner-negative states of light with a tunable negativity using a single semiconductor quantum dot in a cavity. Optical coherent control of the quantum-dot transition allows to generate a quantum superposition of zero and one photon. The generated quantum states are characterized point-by-point in the phase space through homodyne measurement. The emergence of Wigner-function negativity is observed as the excitation power is increased. After correcting for collection and propagation losses, we obtain fidelities to the ideal state and quantum purities above 95%, together with near-optimal quadrature squeezing. The ability to generate a wide variety of Wigner-negative states with mature semiconductor technology opens promising opportunities for continuous-variable optical quantum technologies.

Pulsed coherent and squeezed driving of a spin-$S$ emitter as a deterministic source of Wigner-negative light
    R. Robertson, S. Parkins · 2026 · Pas encore résumé

Generating propagating Wigner-negative states of light is an important and difficult task for many quantum technologies. Historically, the proposed methods of creating such states have been intrinsically probabilistic, relying on conditional measurements or photon heralding. More recently, methods have been proposed involving the steady-state driving of two-level emitters, where Wigner-negative temporal modes are present in the outgoing field. We theoretically demonstrate through the simulation of a cascaded-systems model that this approach can be improved significantly with pulsed coherent or squeezed driving of a spin-1/2 emitter. This enables the deterministic generation of strongly Wigne…

In the field of continuous-variable quantum information processing, non-Gaussian states with negative values of the Wigner function are crucial for the development of a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer. While several non-Gaussian states have been generated experimentally, none have been created using ultrashort optical wave packets, which are necessary for high-speed quantum computation, in the telecommunication wavelength band where mature optical communication technology is available. In this paper, we present the generation of non-Gaussian states on wave packets with a short 8-ps duration in the 1545.32 nm telecommunication wavelength band using photon subtraction up to three pho…

Widely tunable solid-state source of single-photons matching an atomic transition

Hybrid quantum technologies aim to harness the best characteristics of multiple quantum systems, in a similar fashion that classical computers combine electronic, photonic, magnetic, and mechanical components. For example, quantum dots embedded in semiconductor nanowires can produce highly pure, deterministic, and indistinguishable single-photons with high repetition, while atomic ensembles offer robust photon storage capabilities and strong optical nonlinearities that can be controlled with single-photons. However, to successfully integrate quantum dots with atomic ensembles, one needs to carefully match the optical frequencies of these two platforms. Here, we propose and experimentally dem…

Single-Photon Nonlinearity from a Nanobeam with a Quantum Dot

An efficient single-photon nonlinearity is a key resource for photonic quantum technologies. Single-photon nonlinearities have been demonstrated with quantum dots (QDs) across a range of cavity and waveguide geometries. However, none of these realizations simultaneously provide high-efficiency direct fiber coupling and compatibility with scalable on-chip integration. The nanobeam cavity addresses these limitations through its in-plane geometry, which enables highly efficient, direct fiber coupling alongside scalable homogeneous and heterogeneous on-chip integration. Here, we report a single-photon nonlinearity from a nanobeam cavity coupled to a single quantum dot. The nanobeam interfaces di…

    Résumé scientifique

Semiconductor quantum dots emitting in the telecommunication O- and C-bands are promising candidates as single-photon sources for fiber-based quantum communication. In this work, we show how coherent quasi-resonant and phonon-assisted excitation help reveal the intrinsic optical properties of InAs quantum dots embedded in relaxed InGaAs matrices on top of metamorphic InGaAs layers for achieving emission in the telecom bands. By systematically comparing excitation schemes, we separate excitation-induced effects from intrinsic emitter properties. This allows us to observe linewidths as narrow as 21 $\mu$eV, the disappearance of slow decay channels, and single-photon purity reaching second-orde…

Emerging photonic quantum technologies require the development of high-performance sources of quantum light. Among different platforms, self-assembled GaAs quantum dots (QDs) in AlGaAs have demonstrated excellent performance both as quantum emitters as well as hosts of electron and nuclear spins with long coherence times. The most established method to produce GaAs QDs relies on the Al-droplet etching epitaxy. Under optimized conditions, the QDs have high in-plane symmetry, good ensemble homogeneity, high oscillator strengths, and high optical quality, especially when embedded in charge-tunable diode structures. These properties make them particularly suited for the generation of polarizatio…

    Résumé scientifique

Hybrid photonic quantum computers, combining stationary matter qubits and flying photonic qubits, offer an intrinsically networked and resource-efficient route to large-scale, error-corrected quantum computation. Their core components are cavity-coupled matter qubits that act as light--matter interfaces, enabling: high-efficiency on-demand single-photon generation, stable near-unity photon indistinguishability and spin--multi-photon entanglement. Semiconductor quantum dots in microcavities are a leading platform for realizing such devices. Yet reaching the performance, reproducibility and spin-coherence thresholds for large-scale error correction remains a major challenge requiring industria…

    T. Rotter · 2019 · A Guide to Experiments in Quantum Optics · cité 105 fois · Pas encore résumé

This paper gives an overview on squeezed light with an emphasis on its generation. Squeezing means, that the uctuation in one of two conjugate components (e.g. amplitude and phase) is suppressed while enhanced in the other. Consequently squeezing can be generated by phase sensitive processes. Such processes are known from nonlinear optics, e.g. second harmonic generation, parametric down{ and upconversion and four wave mixing, and they have been successfully used to generate squeezed light. Application of squeezed light is still rare because it is di cult to maintain the squeezed character.
