Resonant pair production and flat band melting in a driven Rydberg chain
Auteurs : Tista Banerjee, K. Sengupta
Résumé scientifique
We study a Rydberg chain subjected to a two-tone periodic drive of the detuning $Δ(t)$ and Rabi frequency $Ω(t)$ at frequencies $ω_1$ and $ω_2=νω_1$ respectively with $ν\in \mathbf{Z}$. In the strong Rydberg blockade limit, such a system reduces to the PXP model and exhibits exact Floquet flat band. Here we determine, using a time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, the domain of validity of such PXP dynamics once the blockade-violating processes are taken into account. We study the melting of such flat bands in the presence of strong, but finite, blockade strength. Using Floquet perturbation theory (FPT), we identify two mechanisms for such melting; the first occurs due to the presence of many-body resonances involving resonant production of nearest-neighbor Rydberg excitation pairs while the second involves virtual processes that access intermediate states with such pairs. Our analytical FPT results match with those obtained using exact diagonalization on a finite chain. We study the dynamics for $|{\rm vac}\rangle$ (Fock state with no Rydberg excitation), $|{\mathbb {Z}}_2\rangle$, and $|{\mathbb {Z}}_3\rangle$ (Fock states with Rydberg excitations on alternate and every third site respectively) initial states. We find that $|{\rm vac}\rangle$ shows exceptional stability against resonant pair formation while $|{\mathbb {Z}}_3\rangle$ exhibits flat band melting via virtual processes away from the direct resonances. We find oscillatory dynamics with large time period for the $|{\mathbb {Z}}_2\rangle$ initial state and the presence of Floquet scars that have large overlap with $|{\mathbb {Z}}_3\rangle$ state; these phenomena occur due to processes that are absent in the PXP limit. We propose measurement of nearest neighbor pair correlation functions using Rydberg atom quantum simulator platforms as an accessible experimental probe for these effects.

Quantifying and Controlling Prethermal Nonergodicity in Interacting Floquet MatterKevin Singh, Cora J. Fujiwara, Zachary A. Geiger et al. · 2018 · Physical Review X · cité 52 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
The use of periodic driving for synthesizing many-body quantum states depends crucially on the existence of a prethermal regime, which exhibits drive-tunable properties while forestalling the effects of heating. This motivates the search for direct experimental probes of the underlying localized nonergodic nature of the wave function in this metastable regime. We report experiments on a many-body Floquet system consisting of atoms in an optical lattice subjected to ultrastrong sign-changing amplitude modulation. Using a double-quench protocol we measure an inverse participation ratio quantifying the degree of prethermal localization as a function of tunable drive parameters and interactions.…

Dressed Floquet scars from protected zero modes in a Rydberg chainSaptadip Roy, B. Mukherjee, K. Sengupta et al. · 2026 · cité 1 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
We show that a symmetry-protected Floquet nullspace can host anomalous many-body eigenstates that are obtained by projecting structured parent states onto an exact zero-quasienergy sector. We demonstrate this in a periodically driven PXP chain with an exponentially large (in system size) protected nullspace. Over the accessible system sizes, special parent states show an exponentially increasing enhancement of their nullspace weight relative to the typical value, even as their absolute overlaps decrease. The resulting Floquet scars can therefore become globally orthogonal to their parents while retaining anomalous correlations inherited from them. We demonstrate this mechanism for two contra…

Resonant dynamics of spin cluster in a periodically driven one-dimensional Rydberg latticeJ. Xiong, Yu Yan, Xun-Da Jiang et al. · 2025 · cité 2 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Rydberg lattice under facilitation conditions can feature kinetic constraints, leading to ballistic and nonergodic behavior at different detuning intensities. Here, we demonstrate that a resonant driving field can achieve effects similar to those under facilitation conditions. We focus on the relaxation dynamics of spin clusters in a periodically driven Rydberg spin lattice. Through an effective Hamiltonian for the domain walls of the spin cluster, it is shown that when the driving frequency is resonant with the Rydberg interaction, the spin cluster exhibits ballistic expansion with half the spreading rate compared to the case of facilitation conditions. However, near the resonant point, the…

Locked Subharmonic Oscillations in the Entanglement Spectrum of a Periodically Driven Topological ChainRishabh Jha · 2026 · Quantum Physics · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Periodically driven quantum systems can exhibit subharmonic response, usually characterized through physical observables and often discussed in interacting settings. Here we show that a sharp subharmonic signature already appears in the entanglement spectrum of a number-conserving free-fermion system. We study a two-step driven Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain whose Floquet operator supports symmetry-protected edge modes at quasienergies $0$ and $π$. When the initial state is a coherent superposition of these two edge sectors, the subsystem correlation matrix alternates between two stroboscopic structures, and an overlap-tracked single-particle entanglement level distills a robust period-doubling …

Heating and many-body resonances in a periodically driven two-band systemM. Bukov, M. Heyl, D. Huse et al. · 2015 · Physical Review B · cité 179 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
We study the dynamics and stability in a strongly interacting resonantly driven two-band model. Using exact numerical simulations, we find a stable regime at large driving frequencies where the time evolution is governed by a local Floquet Hamiltonian that is approximately conserved out to very long times. For slow driving, on the other hand, the system becomes unstable and heats up to infinite temperature. While thermalization is relatively fast in these two regimes (but to different ``temperatures''), in the crossover between them we find slow nonthermalizing time evolution: temporal fluctuations become strong and temporal correlations long lived. Microscopically, we trace back the origin …

Supersolid phases of ultracold bosons trapped in optical lattices dressed with Rydberg $p$-statesMathieu Barbier, Henrik Lütjeharms, Walter Hofstetter · 2021 · Quantum Gases · cité 6 fois · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Engineering quantum phases with spontaneously broken symmetries is a major goal of research in different fields. Trapped ultracold Rydberg-excited atoms in optical lattices are a promising platform for realizing quantum phases with broken lattice translational symmetry since they are interacting over distances larger than the lattice constant. Although numerous theoretical works on trapped Rydberg-excited gases have predicted such phases, in particular density wave or supersolid phases, their experimental observation proves to be difficult due to challenges such as scattering processes and the limited experimentally achievable coupling strength. Most of these previous studies have focused on…

Prethermal Fragmentation in a Periodically Driven Fermionic Chain.Somsubhra Ghosh, I. Paul, K. Sengupta · 2022 · Physical Review Letters · cité 25 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
We study a fermionic chain with nearest-neighbor hopping and density-density interactions, where the nearest-neighbor interaction term is driven periodically. We show that such a driven chain exhibits prethermal strong Hilbert space fragmentation (HSF) in the high drive amplitude regime at specific drive frequencies ω_{m}^{*}. This constitutes the first realization of HSF for out-of-equilibrium systems. We obtain analytic expressions of ω_{m}^{*} using a Floquet perturbation theory and provide exact numerical computation of entanglement entropy, equal-time correlation functions, and the density autocorrelation of fermions for finite chains. All of these quantities indicate clear signatures o…

Krylov complexity of a tilted extended Bose-Hubbard chain with Rydberg-dressed interactionsYi-Fan Chen, Tian-Yi Yan, Lu Qin et al. · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
We investigate Krylov state complexity in a tilted extended Bose-Hubbard chain in which both the on-site interaction $U$ and nearest-neighbor interaction $V$ are present. The tilted extended Bose-Hubbard model can be realized with Rydberg-dressed interactions in optical lattices. Using exact diagonalization and Lanczos recursion from three physically motivated Fock states, we compute the time-dependent complexity, its long-time saturation value, and the fluctuations of the Lanczos coefficients for an open chain at unit filling. Crucially, we identify a pronounced quasi-chaotic diagonal regime near $U\simeq V$ in which the Krylov complexity saturation exhibits a sharp ridge while the spectral…

Floquet realization of prethermal Meissner phase in a two-leg flux ladderBiswajit Paul, Tapan Mishra, K. Sengupta · 2025 · Physical Review A · cité 5 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
We show that a periodically driven two-leg flux ladder hosting interacting hardcore bosons exhibits a prethermal Meissner phase for large drive amplitudes and at special drive frequencies. Such a prethermal Meissner phase is characterized by a finite time-averaged chiral current. We find an analytic expression of these frequencies using Floquet perturbation theory. Our analysis reveals that the presence of the prethermal Meissner phase is tied to the emergence of strong Hilbert space fragmentation in these driven ladders. We support our analytical results by numerical study of finite-size flux ladders using exact diagonalization and discuss experiments using ultracold dipolar atom platforms …

Floquet control of interactions and edge states in a programmable quantum simulatorO. Katz, Lei Feng, Diego Porras et al. · 2024 · Nature Communications · cité 24 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Quantum simulators based on trapped ions enable the study of spin systems and models with rich dynamical phenomena. The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model for fermions in one dimension is a canonical example that can support a topological insulator phase when couplings between sites are dimerized, featuring long-lived edge states. Here, we experimentally implement a spin-based variant of the SSH model using one-dimensional trapped-ion chains with tunable interaction range, realized in crystals containing up to 22 interacting spins. Using an array of individually focused laser beams, we apply site-specific, time-dependent Floquet fields to induce controlled bond dimerization. Under conditions t…

Floquet Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases in Cold-Atom Systems.Ionut-Dragos Potirniche, A. Potter, M. Schleier-Smith et al. · 2016 · Physical Review Letters · cité 127 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
We propose and analyze two distinct routes toward realizing interacting symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases via periodic driving. First, we demonstrate that a driven transverse-field Ising model can be used to engineer complex interactions which enable the emulation of an equilibrium SPT phase. This phase remains stable only within a parametric time scale controlled by the driving frequency, beyond which its topological features break down. To overcome this issue, we consider an alternate route based upon realizing an intrinsically Floquet SPT phase that does not have any equilibrium analog. In both cases, we show that disorder, leading to many-body localization, prevents runaway hea…

Dynamical Freezing and Scar Points in Strongly Driven Floquet Matter: Resonance vs Emergent Conservation LawsA. Haldar, D. Sen, R. Moessner et al. · 2021 · Physical Review X · cité 65 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
We consider a clean quantum system subject to strong periodic driving. The existence of a dominant energy scale, $h_D^x$, can generate considerable structure in an effective description of a system which, in the absence of the drive, is non-integrable, interacting, and does not host localization. In particular, we uncover points of freezing in the space of drive parameters (frequency and amplitude). At those points, the dynamics is severely constrained due to the emergence of an almost exact local conserved quantity, which scars the {\it entire} Floquet spectrum by preventing the system from heating up ergodically, starting from any generic state, even though it delocalizes over an appropria…

Phase Structure of Driven Quantum Systems.V. Khemani, A. Lazarides, R. Moessner et al. · 2015 · Physical Review Letters · cité 762 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Clean and interacting periodically driven systems are believed to exhibit a single, trivial "infinite-temperature" Floquet-ergodic phase. In contrast, here we show that their disordered Floquet many-body localized counterparts can exhibit distinct ordered phases delineated by sharp transitions. Some of these are analogs of equilibrium states with broken symmetries and topological order, while others-genuinely new to the Floquet problem-are characterized by order and nontrivial periodic dynamics. We illustrate these ideas in driven spin chains with Ising symmetry.
