Deprojecting and constraining the vertical thickness of exoKuiper belts
James Terrill, Sebastian Marino, Richard A. Booth et al. · 2023 · Earth and Planetary Astrophysics · cité 14 fois · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

Constraining the vertical and radial structure of debris discs is crucial to understanding their formation, evolution and dynamics. To measure both the radial and vertical structure, a disc must be sufficiently inclined. However, if a disc is too close to edge-on, deprojecting its emission becomes non-trivial. In this paper we show how Frankenstein, a non-parametric tool to extract the radial brightness profile of circumstellar discs, can be used to deproject their emission at any inclination as long as they are optically thin and axisymmetric. Furthermore, we extend Frankenstein to account for the vertical thickness of an optically thin disc ($H(r)$) and show how it can be constrained by sa…

The vertical structure of debris disks and the impact of gas
Johan Olofsson, Philippe Thébault, Quentin Kral et al. · 2022 · Earth and Planetary Astrophysics · cité 20 fois · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

The vertical structure of debris disks provides clues about their dynamical evolution and the collision rate of the unseen planetesimals. Thanks to the ever-increasing angular resolution of contemporary instruments and facilities, we are beginning to constrain the scale height of a handful of debris disks, either at near-infrared or millimeter wavelengths. Nonetheless, this is often done for individual targets only. We present here the geometric modeling of eight disks close to edge-on, all observed with the same instrument (SPHERE) and using the same mode (dual-beam polarimetric imaging). Motivated by the presence of CO gas in two out of the eight disks, we then investigate the impact that …

Is there more than meets the eye? Presence and role of submicron grains in debris discs
Philippe Thebault, Quentin Kral · 2019 · Earth and Planetary Astrophysics · cité 18 fois · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

The presence of submicron grains has been inferred in several debris discs, despite the fact that these particles should be blown out by stellar radiation pressure on very short timescales. So far, no fully satisfying explanation has been found for this apparent paradox. We investigate the possibility that the observed abundances of submicron grains could be "naturally" produced in bright debris discs, where the high collisional activity produces them at a rate high enough to partially compensate for their rapid removal. We also investigate to what extent this potential presence of small grains can affect our understanding of some debris disc characteristics. We use a code following the coll…

Stirred but not shaken: a multi-wavelength view of HD 16743's debris disc
Jonathan P. Marshall, Julien Milli, Elodie Choquet et al. · 2023 · Earth and Planetary Astrophysics · cité 9 fois · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

Planetesimals -- asteroids and comets -- are the building blocks of planets in protoplanetary discs and the source of dust, ice and gas in debris discs. Along with planets they comprise the left-over material after star formation that constitutes a planetary system. Planets influence the dynamics of planetesimals, sculpting the orbits of debris belts to produce asymmetries or gaps. We can constrain the architecture of planetary systems, and infer the presence of unseen planetary companions, by high spatial resolution imaging of debris discs. HD~16743 is a relatively young F-type star that hosts a bright edge-on debris disc. Based on far-infrared \textit{Herschel} observations its disc was th…

ALMA Detection of Extended Millimeter Halos in the HD 32297 and HD 61005 Debris Disks
    Meredith A. MacGregor, Alycia J. Weinberger, A. Meredith Hughes et al. · 2018 · 2018, ApJ, 869, 75 · cité 37 fois · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

We present ALMA 1.3 mm (230 GHz) observations of the HD 32297 and HD 61005 debris disks, two of the most iconic debris disks due to their dramatic swept-back wings seen in scattered light images. These observations achieve sensitivities of 14 and 13 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ for HD 32297 and HD 61005, respectively, and provide the highest resolution images of these two systems at millimeter wavelengths to date. By adopting a MCMC modeling approach, we determine that both disks are best described by a two-component model consisting of a broad ($\Delta R/R> 0.4$) planetesimal belt with a rising surface density gradient, and a steeply falling outer halo aligned with the scattered light disk. The inne…

The REASONS Survey: Resolved Millimeter Observations of a Large Debris Disk Around the Nearby F Star HD 170773
    Aldo G. Sepulveda, Luca Matra, Grant M. Kennedy et al. · 2019 · The Astrophysical Journal, 881, 84 (2019) · cité 17 fois · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

Debris disks are extrasolar analogs to our own Kuiper Belt and they are detected around at least 17% of nearby Sun-like stars. The morphology and dynamics of a disk encode information about its history, as well as that of any exoplanets within the system. We used ALMA to obtain 1.3 mm observations of the debris disk around the nearby F5V star HD 170773. We image the face-on ring and determine its fundamental parameters by forward-modeling the interferometric visibilities through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach. Using a symmetric Gaussian surface density profile, we find a 71 $\pm$ 4 au wide belt with a radius of 193$^{+2}_{-3}$ au, a relatively large radius compared to most other millime…

The clumpy structure of $ε$ Eridani's debris disc revisited by ALMA
Mark Booth, Tim D. Pearce, Alexander V. Krivov et al. · 2023 · Earth and Planetary Astrophysics · cité 18 fois · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

$\epsilon$ Eridani is the closest star to our Sun known to host a debris disc. Prior observations in the (sub-)millimetre regime have potentially detected clumpy structure in the disc and attributed this to interactions with an (as yet) undetected planet. However, the prior observations were unable to distinguish between structure in the disc and background confusion. Here we present the first ALMA image of the entire disc, which has a resolution of 1.6"$\times$1.2". We clearly detect the star, the main belt and two point sources. The resolution and sensitivity of this data allow us to clearly distinguish background galaxies (that show up as point sources) from the disc emission. We show tha…

Using planet migration and dust drift to weigh protoplanetary discs
Yinhao Wu, Clément Baruteau, Sergei Nayakshin · 2023 · Earth and Planetary Astrophysics · cité 4 fois · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

ALMA has spatially resolved over 200 annular structures in protoplanetary discs, many of which are suggestive of the presence of planets. Constraining the mass of these putative planets is quite degenerate for it depends on the disc physical properties, and for simplicity a steady-state is often assumed whereby the planet position is kept fixed and there is a constant source of dust at the outer edge of the disc. Here we argue against this approach by demonstrating how the planet and dust dynamics can lift degeneracies of such steady-state models. We take main disc parameters from the well-known protoplanetary disc HD 163296 with a suspected planet at $R\approx 86$~au as an example. By runni…
