JWST/MIRI Observations of Amorphous Silicates in Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS
L’essentiel
Question
The 3I feature is smooth and lacks the spectral structure associated with crystalline silicates.
-
This preference for the upper bound favors compact grains over highly porous aggregates.
-
For the fully profiled analysis, all dust parameters in each model were allowed to vary resulting in an increase of upper limit to 5.3%. The minimum $\chi^{2}$ for all models occurs at zero crystalline abundance, which means that the spectrum does not require crystalline material.
-
The 6.83 µm feature is consistent with both carbonate minerals and aliphatic C–H bearing material. Aliphatic hydrocarbons provide a plausible explanation based on laboratory spectra and observations of other comets, but our LRS observations do not distinguish between these possible interpretations.
-
The lack of crystalline silicates demonstrated by our analysis suggests that the dust component of the 3I/ATLAS nucleus underwent little thermal processing during its formation and accretion.
Limites
The posterior distribution exhibits a clear correlation between the silicate peak grain size and the relative abundance of silicates and carbon (Figure 3), indicating that these parameters are not independently constrained by the LRS spectrum.
The fit does not effectively constrain the maximum grain size.
We did not formally test for minor species, but note that they were not required for a good fit to the LRS spectrum.

JWST Reveals Refractory-rich Water Ice in Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS: Evidence for a Continuum of Grain Properties across Protoplanetary DisksS. Protopapa, M. S. Kelley, M. Cordiner et al. · 2026 · Astrophysical Journal Letters · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
We present JWST/NIRSpec PRISM observations of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS obtained on 2025 August 6 (Epoch 1), 2025 December 22 (Epoch 2), and 2026 April 1 (Epoch 3), spanning 8 months around perihelion at heliocentric distances of 3.3, 2.4, and 5.7 au, respectively. The spectra reveal a broad 3 μm absorption band together with H2O, CO2, and CO gas emission. Unlike previously reported water-ice-rich solar system comae, the strong 3 μm absorption is accompanied by weak or absent 1.5 and 2.0 μm water-ice bands. Spectral modeling indicates that the observations are best reproduced by submicron- to micron-sized water-ice-bearing aggregates containing refractory material. Compared with Epoch …

High-resolution optical spectroscopy reveals the distinctive volatile composition of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLASK. Aravind, E. Jehin, C. Opitom et al. · 2026 · Astronomy & Astrophysics · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Comets preserve volatile material from the early stages of planetary-system formation. The discovery of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS enables a direct comparison between the composition of a comet formed around another star and that of comets in the Solar System. We aim to characterise the evolution of the coma composition of 3I/ATLAS across perihelion by deriving the production rates of the key volatile species in the optical range and to compare its composition with that of Solar System comets. We present a homogeneous high-resolution spectroscopic monitoring in the near-UV and optical with Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph on the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telesc…

Spectral Energy Distribution and Polarimetric Properties of Dust in the Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLASSeungwon Choi, M. Ishiguro, Hiroyuki Naito et al. · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS exhibits unusual polarimetric properties compared with Solar System comets, while constraints on its fundamental physical properties, such as dust albedo and grain-size distribution, remain limited. We obtained new optical polarimetry near opposition with the Pirka Telescope, combined it with previously reported polarimetric measurements, and constructed a visible-to-mid-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) from HST, VLT, SPHEREx, and JWST observations. The SED indicates that the coma is dominated by dark, absorbing dust, with an effective V-band albedo of $p_{\rm eff}\sim0.04$. Modeling the SED with a power-law grain-size distribution yields a size ind…

Characterization of the anisotropic dust activity of interstellar comet 3I/ATLASBin Liu, Xiao-Ping Zhang, Xiao-Dong Liu et al. · 2026 · Astronomy & Astrophysics · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
We constrained the activity geometry of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS by combining high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging with multi-epoch Zwicky Transient Facility observations and forward dust-dynamical modeling. The isotropic models explored here failed to reproduce the observed sunward structure, which was better matched by anisotropic emission from a rotating nucleus. Under the adopted prograde interpretation, the preferred solution has a high-obliquity spin state, with (I and (Φ ≃-84^̧irc). The preferred model is consistent with sustained dust activity beginning in late January 2025 and the modeled dust-production rate increases from approximately 20, on 2025 July 21 to about…

High Water D/H Ratio of the Interstellar Object 3I/ATLAS is Consistent with a Low-metallicity OriginK. Furuya, M. Cordiner, D. Bockélee-Morvan et al. · 2026 · Astrophysical Journal Letters · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Recent JWST observations have revealed unusually high 12C/13C ratios in carbon-bearing molecules of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, consistent with formation in a lower-metallicity environment than the present-day local interstellar medium (ISM). 3I/ATLAS also exhibits an exceptionally high water D/H ratio, exceeding those in solar system comets and nearby low-mass star-forming regions. Here we investigate whether this high water D/H ratio can be reproduced in a low-metallicity formation scenario, using gas–ice astrochemical models. Assuming that the water observed in 3I/ATLAS was inherited from the parent molecular cloud and core, we perform a grid of astrochemical models covering the clo…

Delayed Methane Detection in 3I/ATLAS: Galactic Cosmic Ray–Driven Subsurface Stratification and Interstellar Exposure Age ConstraintsAkshat Rawat, K. Acharyya · 2026 · Astrophysical Journal · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS shows unusual volatile activity, including strong H2O, CO, and CO2 production and a delayed postperihelion detection of CH4. In this work, we investigate the delayed CH4 detection in a H2O, CO2, and CO ice matrix using a shape model coupled with a thermophysical nucleus model that incorporates interstellar processing by Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). We track the sublimation, trapping, depletion, and release of these volatiles as a function of heliocentric distance and explore the relevant parameter space through 12,000 model runs to identify viable combinations of primordial volatile inventory and effective GCR exposure age that reproduce the observed production ra…

Very Large Telescope Observations of Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS. II. From Quiescence to Glow: Dramatic Rise of Ni i Emission and Incipient CN Outgassing at Large Heliocentric Distances*Rohan Rahatgaonkar, Juan Pablo Carvajal, Thomas H. Puzia et al. · 2025 · ApJL 995 L34 (2025) · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
We report VLT spectroscopy of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS (C/2025~N1) from $r_{\rm h}\!\simeq\!4.4$ to $2.85$~au using X-shooter (300--550\,nm, $R\!\simeq\!3000$) and UVES (optical, $R\!\simeq\!35k-80k$). The coma is dust-dominated with a fairly constant red optical continuum slope ($\sim$21--22\%/1000Å). We report detection of CN emission and also detect numerous Ni\,\textsc{ii}~lines while Fe\,\textsc{i}~remains undetected, potentially implying efficiently released gas-phase Ni. At $r_{\rm h}\!\simeq\!3.14$~au we derive $3σ$ limits of $Q({\rm OH})<{1.48\times10^{26}}\ {\rm s^{-1}}$, but find no indications for [O\,\textsc{i}], C$_2$, C$_3$ or NH$_2$. From our latest X-shooter measureme…

Gaseous SiO and Silicate Clouds in Three Benchmark Early-L DwarfsZ. Tu, Shu Wang, Xiao-Dian Chen et al. · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Tracing silicon from gaseous SiO into silicate condensates provides a direct view of the condensation process that forms silicate clouds in L-dwarf atmospheres. Here we present evidence for gaseous SiO in three benchmark early-L dwarfs, HD 89744B, GJ 1048B, and LSPM J0632+5053B, using JWST/NIRSpec and MIRI spectroscopy. Atmospheric retrievals with and without SiO under multiple cloud prescriptions identify the strongest SiO signatures at 4.0--4.2 and 7.7--8.2 $\mu$m, with the local likelihood diagnostic reaching $4.6\sigma$. In the physical cloud retrievals, the 8 $\mu$m band probes lower pressures than the 4 $\mu$m overtone, reaching atmospheric layers where equilibrium SiO is more strongly…
