Spontaneous brain-wide rotational dynamics constrain cue-evoked behavior
L’essentiel
Question

Notably, the RCA plane accounted for only $0.6\%$ of the total variance, compared with $87\%$ for the PCA plane, highlighting how a rotational mode can be overlooked by conventional dimensionality-reduction methods.
-

Using separate training and testing data, the cue-onset state in the single-rotation RCA mode predicted response with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.638, whereas the pre-cue DRCA state achieved an AUC of 0.612. Combining the two states increased the AUC to 0.677 (Fig. 6D), indicating that the preparatory DRCA mode contained information complementary to that provided by the RCA state at cue onset (see Methods for details).

These results suggest that learning primarily alters the cue-evoked dynamics, and hence the distribution of $f^{\mathrm{post}}_{\parallel}$, while preserving the mapping from this dynamical variable to response probability.
-
The rotational measure therefore revealed a group difference that was not apparent from PCA variability alone: reduced brain-wide rotational dynamics were associated with early psychosis.
-
Thus, double-rotation modes separated behaviorally defined epochs in both mouse cortex-wide calcium activity and human fMRI.
Limites
Because RCA and DRCA directly optimize the respective scores, these comparisons do not provide an independent test of predictive performance.
This gradient was not captured by the RNN (Fig. 3I).
Sample sizes were determined by the available datasets and were not set by an a priori power calculation.

Latent Dynamics Enable Decoding of Brain States and Discovery of Oculomotor RhythmicityTim Näher · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
This dissertation examines how latent neural and behavioural dynamics can be inferred from indirect, limited measurements in two areas of systems neuroscience, where the most salient feature of the recorded signal does not coincide with the structure in which the phenomenon of interest resides. Part I concerns functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Chapter 2 introduces a Riemannian-geometry classification framework for fNIRS data that nearly doubles accuracy in decoding eight brain states relative to traditional, channel-wise methods. Chapter 3 applies this framework to a clinical proof-of-principle for disorders of consciousness. Part II addresses the temporal structure of saccadic …

Cortico-cerebellar beta-band dynamics predict flexible motor timingCoen S. Zandvoort, Charlotte C. Wissing, J. Winter et al. · 2026 · bioRxiv · preprint, non relu par les pairs · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Flexible motor control requires that movements adapt to changing temporal contexts. Here, we test whether flexible timing is driven by context-dependent encoding across cortico-cerebellar circuits and how neural dynamics within these circuits enable accurate performance. To overcome the signal-to-noise limitations of conventional electro- and magnetoencephalography, we recorded whole-head neural dynamics using optically pumped magnetometer arrays (OPM-MEG). Participants learned a context-dependent task, executing manual button presses at time intervals 800 ms (T1) and 1,600 ms (T2), respectively, to avoid a periocular air puff, which was associated with an implicit conditioned eyeblink. We f…

Flexible modulation of neuronal population dynamics drives variable decision-making in C. elegansJalaja Madhusudhanan, A. Parinov, Charles Fieseler et al. · 2026 · bioRxiv · preprint, non relu par les pairs · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Behavior arises from the interplay between spontaneous brain dynamics and sensory-driven responses, yet how spontaneous neural activity shapes variability in decision-making remains unclear. We leverage the tractable C. elegans nervous system to address this question. During oxygen avoidance, we observe binary trial-to-trial variability in behavioral responses. Whole-brain calcium imaging reveals a brain-wide sensory-to-motor transformation in which sensory neurons faithfully encode the stimulus but do not predict choice. Instead, decision-related information is distributed across interneurons and motor neurons, encoded through a neuronal subspace. This decision-biasing state evolves slowly …

A brain–behavior generative model links individual brain dynamics to perceptual decisionsChao-Ming Wang, Guo-Chun Yang, Shao-Nan Wang et al. · 2026 · bioRxiv · preprint, non relu par les pairs · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Perceptual decision speed varies across individuals and trials. Explaining this variability requires linking individual brain anatomy, neural dynamics, and behavior, yet whole-brain models typically reproduce brain signals without behavior, whereas behavioral models lack anatomical constraints. Here we introduce a brain–behavior generative model in which whole-brain dynamics on each participant’s structural connectome generate both single-trial electroencephalography (EEG) and reaction times. Fitted to 17 participants performing motion discrimination, the models reproduced individual eventrelated potentials and reaction-time distributions. Joint fitting enabled the models to predict whether …

Structured recurrence of latent neural processes predicts memory recognition performanceK.
Understanding cognition requires explaining not only which neural processes are engaged, but how their relationships evolve through time. We tested whether the recurrent organization of low-dimensional whole-brain dynamics relates to auditory recognition behaviour beyond activation magnitude. After a brief learning phase, 65 participants underwent magnetoencephalography (MEG) while recognizing three-, five-, and seven-sound auditory sequences, presented unchanged or with a single early or late tone alteration. Broadband Brain Network Estimation via Source Separation (BROAD-NESS) identified broadband latent networks from source-reconstructed activity and represented their joint activation as …

Brain Dynamics Underlying Reaching Movements Under UncertaintyNan Liu, A. Zabicki, G. Fink et al. · 2026 · Human Brain Mapping · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Motor responses are influenced by inferred predictability, but it remains unclear how uncertainty, or its inverse, precision, is encoded within motor control networks. In this study, we combined computational modeling of reaching movement response speed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We used a cueing paradigm with changing cue predictability (~50%, ~70%, and ~90%) to test how predictive inference about left/right reaching responses affected cortical activity and network connectivity in 28 healthy young adults. Behavioral results showed that the response speed differences between invalid and valid cueing increased with a higher model‐derived probability that the cue will b…

Natural prey capture reveals flexible reconfiguration of canonical motor-cortical dynamics for online controlJeffrey D. Walker, Paul L. Aparicio, Shreya Saxena et al. · 2026 · bioRxiv · preprint, non relu par les pairs · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
The ability to record neural populations during natural behavior now allows us to ask whether canonical motor-cortical dynamics, defined largely in constrained reaches to static targets, also organize self-paced, feedback-rich actions that require continuous correction. We recorded sensorimotor cortex in marmosets freely capturing live prey, a behavior that separates into ballistic quick captures and dynamic pursuits requiring real-time adjustment. Ballistic captures corresponded to canonical cortical reaching dynamics without an instructed delay, including near-orthogonal premovement and movement subspaces. Pursuits did not recruit additional neural dimensions; despite their elaborate kinem…

Cortico-striatal network architecture shapes rhythmic biases in musicM. Lumaca, J. van der Werff, Peter E. Keller et al. · 2026 · Cerebral Cortex · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Abstract Why is human music rhythmically structured the way it is? One hypothesis is that the human brain is intrinsically wired to favor specific rhythmic organizations. To test this, we collected diffusion and resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) data from musically untrained participants and, weeks later, asked them to imitate randomly generated drumming sequences using finger taps. These imitations exhibited systematic biases toward temporal structures widespread in human music: predictable patterns characterized by isochronous organization (1:1) and other small integer ratios (2:1 and 3:1). Functional connectome analyses linked the increased rhythmic predictability of reproduced rhythms …

Nonreciprocal many-body physicsMichel Fruchart, Vincenzo Vitelli · 2026 · cité 32 fois · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Reciprocity is a fundamental symmetry present in many natural phenomena and engineered systems. Distinct situations where this symmetry is broken are typically grouped under the umbrella term"nonreciprocity", colloquially defined by: the action of A on B $\neq$ the action of B on A. In this review, we elucidate what nonreciprocity is by providing an introduction to its most salient classes: nonvariational dynamics, violations of Newton's third law, broken detailed balance, nonreciprocal responses and nonreciprocity of arbitrary linear operators. Next, we point out where to find these manifestations of non-reciprocity, from ensembles of particles with field mediated interactions to synthetic …
