Wealth Inequality Trends Around the World: a first view leveraging multiple data sources
Franziska Disslbacher, Salvatore Morelli, M. Targa · 2026 · Oxford Open Economics · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

Using the novel GC Wealth Project Data Warehouse, this paper shows that wealth inequality has increased since the early 2000s in roughly 60% of the countries in our sample, although trends are not uniform across countries. While the largest gains in wealth shares accrue to the top 10%, relative losses are borne by the bottom 50% and the middle 40% alike. We reveal substantial variation of estimates across data sources and units of analysis, which complicates international comparison of wealth inequality. Yet, core trends at the country level are generally robust. Individual-based series generally report higher inequality than household-based ones. Regional patterns reveal sharp increases in …

Some universal patterns in income distribution: An econophysics approach
    A. Shaikh, A. Ragab · 2022 · Metroeconomica · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

This paper utilizes the econophysics "two class" (EPTC) approach to income distribution to derive certain empirical rules applying to all countries in the comprehensive World Income Inequality (WIID) database. This approach demonstrates that wage incomes follow an exponential distribution while property incomes follow a Pareto distribution, which leads to a simple and empirically robust approximation to the Lorenz curve. We in turn show that the per capita income of any bottom fraction (x) of the population is proportional to “inequality adjusted GDP per capita”, i.e. to (GDP per capita).(1-Gini), the constant of proportionality a(x) being solely a function of population fraction under consi…

Inequality in a model of capitalist economy
Jhordan Silveira de Borba, Sebastián Gonçalves, Celia Anteneodo · 2024 · Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

We analyze inequality aspects of the agent-based model of capitalist economy named it Social Architecture of Capitalism that has been introduced by Ian Wright. The model contemplates two main types of agents, workers and capitalists, which can also be unemployed. Starting from a state where all agents are unemployed and possess the same initial wealth, the system, governed by a few simple rules, quickly self-organizes into two classes. After a transient, the model reproduces the statistics of many relevant macroeconomic quantities of real economies worldwide, notably the two regimes of the distributions of wealth and income. We perform extensive simulations testing the role of the model para…

Economic Factors Associated with Income Inequality: Panel Evidence from 93 Countries
    A. Zhanbozova, F. Alzhanova, A. Panzabekova et al. · 2026 · The economy: strategy and practice · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

Income inequality constitutes a significant characteristic of socio-economic development, since an increase in aggregate output is not identical to broader participation of different population groups in the distribution of generated income. The aim of this study is to identify economic factors consistently associated with within-country changes in income inequality using panel data from 93 countries over the period 2002–2021. The empirical analysis is based on data from the World Bank’s World Development Indicators and Poverty and Inequality Platform. The sample covers 93 countries over the period 2002-2021 and includes 1,369 country-year observations in an unbalanced panel. The study emplo…

Wealth and inequality over eight centuries of British capitalism
    J. Madsen · 2019 · Journal of Development Economics · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

This paper constructs annual data for the aggregate wealth-income ratio, W-Y, saving, s, and growth, g, for Britain over the period 1210-2013 and tests Piketty’s central hypothesis that the W-Y ratio is governed by the s-g ratio in the long run. Furthermore, Piketty’s model is extended by the share of non-reproducibles in total wealth to explain the W-Y ratio during different eras of capitalism – pre-industrialization, industrialization and the knowledge economy. It is shown that savings, growth and the share of non-reproducibles in total wealth have been the fundamental drivers of the W-Y ratio over the past eight centuries

Wealth Redistribution and Mutual Aid: Comparison using Equivalent/Nonequivalent Exchange Models of Econophysics
    Takeshi Kato · 2022 · Entropy 2023, 25(2), 224 · Résumé IA disponible
    Résumé scientifique

Given the wealth inequality worldwide, there is an urgent need to identify the mode of wealth exchange through which it arises. To address the research gap regarding models that combine equivalent exchange and redistribution, this study compares an equivalent market exchange with redistribution based on power centers and a nonequivalent exchange with mutual aid using the Polanyi, Graeber, and Karatani modes of exchange. Two new exchange models based on multi-agent interactions are reconstructed following an econophysics approach for evaluating the Gini index (inequality) and total exchange (economic flow). Exchange simulations indicate that the evaluation parameter of the total exchange divi…

Inequality Consequences of Inflation: Income and Wealth Distribution
Leyla Firuze Arda Özalp, Fatma Esra Soylu · 2026 · Bulletin of Economic Theory and Analysis · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

While the literature has extensively examined the impacts of inflation on income distribution, relatively little attention has been given to its impact on wealth distribution. Addressing this gap, this paper analyzes inflation's effects on income inequality and wealth inequality, aiming to provide new empirical evidence. Using panel data methodology, the paper analyzes the impacts of inflation on inequalities across 37 OECD countries over the period 1995 to 2022. The impacts of inflation on the top income and top wealth shares are examined at both the panel and country levels. The findings indicate that inflation is associated with higher levels of inequality, with this association being sta…

Exponential and power-law probability distributions of wealth and income in the United Kingdom and the United States
Adrian A. Drǎgulescu, V. Yakovenko · 2001 · Physica A-statistical Mechanics and Its Applications · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

We present the data on wealth and income distributions in the United Kingdom, as well as on the income distributions in the individual states of the USA. In all of these data, we find that the great majority of population is described by an exponential distribution, whereas the high-end tail follows a power law. The distributions are characterized by a dimensional scale analogous to temperature. The values of temperature are determined for the UK and the USA, as well as for the individual states of the USA.

Statistical Physics Perspective on Economic Inequality
    V. Yakovenko · 2023 · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

This article is a supplement to my main contribution to the Routledge Handbook of Complexity Economics (2023). On the basis of three recent papers, it presents an unconventional perspective on economic inequality from a statistical physics point of view. One section demonstrates empirical evidence for the exponential distribution of income in 67 countries around the world. The exponential distribution was not familiar to mainstream economists until it was introduced by physicists by analogy with the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution of energy and subsequently confirmed in empirical data for many countries. Another section reviews the two-class structure of income distribution in the USA. While th…

The influence of heterogeneity is investigated, the appearance of the fat tail in the wealth distribution and the relaxation to equilibrium are discussed. A unified reformulation of the …

Colloquium: Statistical mechanics of money, wealth, and income
    V. Yakovenko, J. Rosser · 2009 · Reviews of Modern Physics · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

This Colloquium reviews statistical models for money, wealth, and income distributions developed in the econophysics literature since the late 1990s. By analogy with the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution of energy in physics, it is shown that the probability distribution of money is exponential for certain classes of models with interacting economic agents. Alternative scenarios are also reviewed. Data analysis of the empirical distributions of wealth and income reveals a two-class distribution. The majority of the population belongs to the lower class, characterized by the exponential ("thermal") distribution, whereas a small fraction of the population in the upper class is characterized by the …

    The Social Architecture of Capitalism
Ian P. Wright · 2004 · Physica A-statistical Mechanics and Its Applications · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

A dynamic model of the social relations between workers and capitalists is introduced. The model self-organises into a dynamic equilibrium with statistical properties that are in close qualitative and in many cases quantitative agreement with a broad range of known empirical distributions of developed capitalism, including the power-law firm size distribution, the Laplace firm and GDP growth distribution, the lognormal firm demises distribution, the exponential recession duration distribution, the lognormal–Pareto income distribution, and the gamma-like firm rate-of-profit distribution. Normally these distributions are studied in isolation, but this model unifies and connects them within a s…
