Energy transfer and restructuring in amorphous solid water upon consecutive irradiation
L’essentiel

Thermal desorption of interstellar ices. A review on the controlling parameters and their implications fromsnowlines to chemical complexityMarco Minissale, Yuri Aikawa, Edwin Bergin et al. · 2022 · ACS Earth and Space Science, 2022 · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
The evolution of star-forming regions and their thermal balance are strongly influenced by their chemical composition, that, in turn, is determined by the physico-chemical processes that govern the transition between the gas phase and the solid state, specifically icy dust grains (e.g., particles adsorption and desorption). Gas-grain and grain-gas transitions as well as formation and sublimation of interstellar ices are thus essential elements of understanding astrophysical observations of cold environments (e.g., pre-stellar cores) where unexpected amounts of a large variety of chemical species have been observed in the gas phase. Adsorbed atoms and molecules also undergo chemical reactions…

Implications of evaporative cooling by H$_2$ for 1I/`OumuamuaThiem Hoang, Abraham Loeb · 2023 · Astrophysique des galaxies · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
The first interstellar object observed in our solar system, 1I/`Oumuamua, exhibited several peculiar properties, including extreme elongation and non-gravitational acceleration. \cite{Bergner.2023} proposed that evaporation of trapped H$_2$ created by cosmic rays (CRs) can explain the non-gravitational acceleration. However, their calculation of surface temperature ignored the crucial cooling effect of evaporating H$_2$. By taking into account the cooling by H$_2$ evaporation, we show that the surface temperature of H$_2$-water ice is lower than the temperature obtained by Bergner and Seligman (2023) by a factor of 9. As a result, the thermal speed of outgassing H$_2$ is decreased by a facto…

Milliarcsecond structure of water maser emission in two young high-mass stellar objects associated with methanol masersAnna Bartkiewicz, Marian Szymczak, Huib Jan van Langevelde · 2012 · Astrophysique des galaxies · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
The 22.2 GHz water masers are often associated with the 6.7 GHz methanol masers but owing to the different excitation conditions they likely probe independent spatial and kinematic regions around the powering young massive star. We compared the emission of these two maser species on milliarcsecond scales to determine in which structures the masers arise and to test a disc-outflow scenario where the methanol emission arises in a circumstellar disc while the water emission comes from an outflow. We obtained high-angular and spectral resolution 22.2 GHz water maser observations of the two sources G31.581+00.077 and G33.641-00.228 using the EVN. In both objects the water maser spots form complex…

Dust evolution in the transition towards the denser ISM: impact on dust temperature, opacity, and spectral indexMelanie Köhler, Nathalie Ysard, Anthony P. Jones · 2015 · Astrophysique des galaxies · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Variations in the observed dust emission and extinction indicate a systematic evolution of grain properties in the transition from the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) to denser molecular clouds. The differences in the dust spectral energy distribution (SED) observed from the diffuse ISM to denser regions, namely an increase in the spectral index at long wavelengths, an increase in the FIR opacity, and a decrease in temperature, are usually assumed to be the result of changes in dust properties. We investigate if evolutionary processes, such as coagulation and accretion, are able to change the dust properties of grains in a way that is consistent with observations. We use a core-mantle grai…

Surface astrochemistry: a computational chemistry perspectiveH. M. Cuppen, A. Fredon, T. Lamberts et al. · 2022 · Astrochemistry VII -- Through the Cosmos from Galaxies to Planets", proceedings of the IAU Symposium No. 332, 2017, Puer · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Molecules in space are synthesized via a large variety of gas-phase reactions, and reactions on dust-grain surfaces, where the surface acts as a catalyst. Especially, saturated, hydrogen-rich molecules are formed through surface chemistry. Astrochemical models have developed over the decades to understand the molecular processes in the interstellar medium, taking into account grain surface chemistry. However, essential input information for gas-grain models, such as binding energies of molecules to the surface, have been derived experimentally only for a handful of species, leaving hundreds of species with highly uncertain estimates. Moreover, some fundamental processes are not well enough c…

[CII] Emission in a Self-Regulated Interstellar MediumAlon Gurman, Chia-Yu Hu, Amiel Sternberg et al. · 2023 · Astrophysique des galaxies · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
The [CII] 157.74 $\mu$m fine structure transition is one of the brightest and most well-studied emission lines in the far-infrared (FIR), produced in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies. We study its properties in sub-pc resolution hydrodynamical simulations for an ISM patch with gas surface density of $\Sigma_{\rm{g}}=10\;M_{\odot}\;\rm{pc}^{-2}$, coupled with time-dependent chemistry, far-ultraviolet (FUV) dust and gas shielding, star formation, photoionization and supernova (SN) feedback, and full line-radiative transfer. The [CII] 157.74 $\mu$m line intensity correlates with star formation rate (SFR), and scales linearly with metallicity, and is, therefore, a good SFR tracer even i…

The Herschel Exploitation of Local Galaxy Andromeda (HELGA) VII: A SKIRT radiative transfer model and insights on dust heatingS. Viaene, M. Baes, A. Tamm et al. · 2016 · A&A 599, A64 (2017) · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
The radiation of stars heats dust grains in the diffuse interstellar medium and in star-forming regions in galaxies. Modelling this interaction provides information on dust in galaxies, a vital ingredient for their evolution. It is not straightforward to identify the stellar populations heating the dust, and to link attenuation to emission on a sub-galactic scale. Radiative transfer models are able to simulate this dust-starlight interaction in a realistic, three-dimensional setting. We investigate the dust heating mechanisms on a local and global galactic scale, using the Andromeda galaxy (M31) as our laboratory. We perform a series of panchromatic radiative transfer simulations of Andromed…

High angular resolution near-IR view of the Orion Bar revealed by Keck/NIRC2Emilie Habart, Romane Le Gal, Carlos Alvarez et al. · 2022 · A&A 673, A149 (2023) · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Nearby Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs), where the gas and dust are heated by the far UV-irradiation emitted from stars, are ideal templates to study the main stellar feedback processes. With this study we aim to probe the detailed structures at the interfaces between ionized, atomic, and molecular gas in the Orion Bar. This nearby prototypical strongly irradiated PDR will be among the first targets of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) within the framework of the PDRs4All Early Release Science program. We employed the sub-arcsec resolution accessible with Keck-II NIRC2 and its adaptive optics system to obtain the most detailed and complete images, ever performed, of the vibrationally ex…
