Low Mach number lattice Boltzmann model for turbulent combustion: flow in confined geometries
L’essentiel

Combined effects of heat loss and curvature on turbulent flame-wall interaction in a premixed dimethyl ether/air flameDriss Kaddar, Matthias Steinhausen, Thorsten Zirwes et al. · 2023 · Dynamique des fluides · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
This study investigates the effects of curvature on the local heat release rate and mixture fraction during turbulent flame-wall interaction of a lean dimethyl ether/air flame using a fully resolved simulation with a reduced skeletal chemical reaction mechanism and mixture-averaged transport. The region in which turbulent flame-wall interaction affects the flame is found to be restricted to a wall distance less than twice the laminar flame thickness. In regions without heat losses, heat release rate and curvature, as well as mixture fraction and curvature, are negatively correlated, which is in accordance with experimental findings. Flame-wall interaction alters the correlation between heat …

Machine learning accelerated computational fluid dynamicsDmitrii Kochkov, Jamie A. Smith, Ayya Alieva et al. · 2021 · Dynamique des fluides · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Numerical simulation of fluids plays an essential role in modeling many physical phenomena, such as weather, climate, aerodynamics and plasma physics. Fluids are well described by the Navier-Stokes equations, but solving these equations at scale remains daunting, limited by the computational cost of resolving the smallest spatiotemporal features. This leads to unfavorable trade-offs between accuracy and tractability. Here we use end-to-end deep learning to improve approximations inside computational fluid dynamics for modeling two-dimensional turbulent flows. For both direct numerical simulation of turbulence and large eddy simulation, our results are as accurate as baseline solvers with 8-1…

Simulating fluid-fluid displacement in a soft capillary tube: How compliance delays interfacial instability and bubble pinch-offSthavishtha R. Bhopalam, Ruben Juanes, Hector Gomez · 2025 · Dynamique des fluides · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
The displacement of a more viscous fluid by a less viscous immiscible fluid in confined geometries is a fundamental problem in multiphase flows. Recent experiments have shown that such fluid-fluid displacement in micro-capillary tubes can lead to interfacial instabilities and, eventually, bubble pinch-off. A critical yet often overlooked aspect of this system is the effect of the tube's deformability on the onset of interfacial instability and bubble pinch-off. Here, we present a computational fluid-structure interaction model and an algorithm to simulate this fluid-fluid displacement problem in a soft capillary tube. We use a phase-field model for the fluids and a nonlinear hyperelastic mod…

Modeling Thermodynamic Trends of Rotating Detonation EnginesJames Koch, J. Nathan Kutz · 2020 · Dynamique des fluides · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
The formation of a number of co- and counter-rotating coherent combustion wave fronts is the hallmark feature of the Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE). The engineering implications of wave topology are not well understood nor quantified, especially with respect to parametric changes in combustor geometry, propellant chemistry, and injection and mixing schemes. In this article, a modeling framework that relates the time and spacial scales of the RDE to engineering performance metrics is developed and presented. The model is built under assumptions of backpressure-insensitivity and nominally choked gaseous propellant injection. The Euler equations of inviscid, compressible fluid flow in one dim…

Teaching the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations to Fast Neural Surrogate Models in 3DNils Wandel, Michael Weinmann, Reinhard Klein · 2020 · Dynamique des fluides · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
Physically plausible fluid simulations play an important role in modern computer graphics and engineering. However, in order to achieve real-time performance, computational speed needs to be traded-off with physical accuracy. Surrogate fluid models based on neural networks have the potential to achieve both, fast fluid simulations and high physical accuracy. However, these approaches rely on massive amounts of training data, require complex pipelines for training and inference or do not generalize to new fluid domains. In this work, we present significant extensions to a recently proposed deep learning framework, which addresses the aforementioned challenges in 2D. We go from 2D to 3D and pr…

Laser powder-bed fusion additive manufacturing: physics of complex melt flow and formation mechanisms of pores, spatter and denudation zonesSaad A. Khairallah, Andrew T. Anderson, Alexander Rubenchik et al. · 2015 · Dynamique des fluides · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
This study demonstrates the significant effect of the recoil pressure and Marangoni convection in laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) of 316L stainless steel. A three-dimensional high fidelity powder-scale model reveals how the strong dynamical melt flow generates pore defects, material spattering (sparking), and denudation zones. The melt track is divided into three sections: a topological depression, a transition and a tail region, each being the location of specific physical effects. The inclusion of laser ray-tracing energy deposition in the powder-scale model improves over traditional volumetric energy deposition. It enables partial particle melting, which impacts pore defects in the denuda…

Fluid Intelligence: A Forward Look on AI Foundation Models in Computational Fluid DynamicsNeil Ashton, Johannes Brandstetter, Siddhartha Mishra · 2025 · Dynamique des fluides · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Driven by the advancement of GPUs and AI, the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is undergoing significant transformations. This paper bridges the gap between the machine learning and CFD communities by deconstructing industrial-scale CFD simulations into their core components. Our main contribution is to propose the first scaling law that incorporates CFD inputs for both data generation and model training to outline the unique challenges of developing and deploying these next-generation AI models for complex fluid dynamics problems. Using our new scaling law, we establish quantitative estimates for the large-scale limit, distinguishing between regimes where the cost of data generat…
