Abstract

The first measurement of the elliptic-flow coefficient ($v_{2}$) of $φ$, K$^0_{\rm S}$, and $Λ(\overlineΛ)$ hadrons performed in OO collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.36$ TeV with the ALICE detector is presented as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) in central and semi-central collisions. For the $φ$ meson, in particular, this is the first measurement of the elliptic flow in a small collision system. At low $p_{\rm T}$, a characteristic mass ordering of $v_{2}$ is observed, consistent with collective expansion of the system, in which heavier hadrons are shifted to higher $p_{\rm T}$ by a common velocity field. At intermediate $p_{\rm T}$, above 3 GeV/$c$, a baryon$-$meson splitting with a $10σ$ significance emerges, with the $Λ(\overlineΛ)$ baryon exhibiting larger $v_{2}$ values than mesons, while, despite its mass being close to the mass of the $Λ$, the $φ$ follows the K$^{0}_{\rm S}$. The $φ$ meson behavior disfavors a purely mass-driven interpretation of the observed patterns and supports the role of hadronization via quark recombination from a collectively flowing partonic medium. These results provide complementary evidence that key signatures of partonic collectivity observed in Pb$-$Pb collisions persist in light nucleus$-$nucleus systems.

This study measures identified-hadron elliptic flow, including φ, K⁰S, and Λ, and reports particle–antiparticle differences across Au+Au collision energies.

    Abstract

Measurements of the elliptic flow, v 2 , of identified hadrons (π ± , K ± , Ks0, p, p, φ, Λ, Λ, Ξ - , Ξ + , Ω - , Ω + ) in Au+Au collisions at √s NN =7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV are presented. The measurements were done at midrapidity using the time-projection chamber and the time-of-flight detectors of the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC experiment during the beam-energy scan program at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A significant difference in the v 2 values for particles and the corresponding antiparticles was observed at all transverse momenta for the first time. The difference increases with decreasing center-of-mass energy, √s NN (or increasing baryon chemical potential, μ B ), …

Investigations of anisotropic flow using multi-particle azimuthal correlations in pp, p-Pb, Xe-Xe, and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC
    ALICE Collaboration · 2019 · Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 142301 (2019) · cited 72 times · AI summary available

This study uses two- and multi-particle azimuthal correlations to measure flow coefficients across several collision systems, providing methods relevant to the OO analysis.

    Abstract

Measurements of anisotropic flow coefficients ($v_n$) and their cross-correlations using two- and multi-particle cumulant methods are reported in collisions of pp at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, p-Pb at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV, Xe-Xe at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 5.44$ TeV, and Pb-Pb at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. These measurements are performed as a function of multiplicity in the mid-rapidity region $|\eta|<0.8$ for the transverse momentum range $0.2 < p_{\rm T} < 3.0$ GeV/$c$. An ordering of the coefficients $v_2 > v_3 > v_4$ is found in pp and p-Pb collisions, similar to that seen in large collision systems, while a weak $v_2$ multiplicity dependen…

Evidence for the collective nature of radial flow in Pb+Pb collisions with the ATLAS detector
ATLAS Collaboration · 2025 · Nuclear Experiment · cited 25 times · AI summary available

This study uses two-particle correlations to examine collective radial-flow fluctuations in Pb+Pb collisions rather than identified-hadron elliptic flow in OO.

    Abstract

Anisotropic flow and radial flow are two key probes of the expansion dynamics and properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). While anisotropic flow has been extensively studied, radial flow, which governs the system's radial expansion, has received less attention. Notably, experimental evidence for the global and collective nature of radial flow has been lacking. This Letter presents the first measurement of transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$) dependence of radial flow fluctuations ($v_0(p_{\mathrm{T}})$) over $0.5<p_{\mathrm{T}}<10$ GeV, using a two-particle correlation method in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV. The data reveal three key features supporting the col…

This study measures charged-particle flow in O+O and Ne+Ne collisions to test collective behavior in light-ion systems.

    Abstract

A central question in strong-interaction physics, governed by quantum chromodynamics (QCD), is whether femtoscale droplets of quark-gluon plasma form in small collision systems involving projectiles significantly smaller than heavy ions. Collisions of light ions such as ^{16}O and ^{20}Ne offer a unique opportunity to probe the emergence of collective behavior in QCD matter. This Letter presents the first measurements of the elliptic (v_{2}) and triangular (v_{3}) flow of charged particles in ^{16}O-^{16}O and ^{20}Ne-^{20}Ne collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.36 TeV with the ALICE detector. This ALICE study measures charged-particle anisotropic flow in Pb–Pb with a pseudorapidity-gap two-particle method used in the OO analysis.

    Abstract

We report the first results of elliptic (v_{2}), triangular (v_{3}), and quadrangular (v_{4}) flow of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are performed in the central pseudorapidity region |η|<0.8 and for the transverse momentum range 0.2<p_{T}<5 GeV/c. The anisotropic flow is measured using two-particle correlations with a pseudorapidity gap greater than one unit and with the multiparticle cumulant method. Compared to results from Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV, the anisotropic flow coefficients v_{2}, v_{3}, and v_{4} are found to inc…

This ALICE study measures higher harmonics of charged-particle flow in Pb–Pb and relates triangular flow to initial spatial anisotropy.

    Abstract

We report on the first measurement of the triangular v3, quadrangular v4, and pentagonal v5 charged particle flow in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We show that the triangular flow can be described in terms of the initial spatial anisotropy and its fluctuations, which provides strong constraints on its origin. In the most central events, where the elliptic flow v2 and v3 have similar magnitude, a double peaked structure in the two-particle azimuthal correlations is observed, which is often interpreted as a Mach cone response to fast partons. We show that this structure can be naturally explained from the measured…

This study tests whether a hadronic transport model can reproduce flow signatures in p–Pb, addressing the origin of collectivity in small systems.

    Abstract

Using the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model, we investigate azimuthal correlations in p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV. Comparison with the experimental data shows that UrQMD cannot reproduce the multiplicity dependence of two- and four-particle cumulants, especially the transition from positive to negative values of c2{4} in high-multiplicity events, which has been taken as experimental evidence of collectivity in p-Pb collisions. Meanwhile, UrQMD cannot describe the differential elliptic flow v2(pT) of all charged hadrons at various multiplicity classes. These discrepancies show that the simulated hadronic p-Pb systems cannot generate enough collective flow as observ…

Elliptic flow at large transverse momenta from quark coalescence.
    D. Molnár, S. Voloshin · 2003 · Physical Review Letters · cited 466 times · Not summarized yet

This study proposes that quark coalescence enhances high-momentum hadron elliptic flow and can produce larger baryon than meson flow.

    Abstract

We show that hadronization via quark coalescence enhances hadron elliptic flow at large p(perpendicular) relative to that of partons at the same transverse momentum. Therefore, compared to earlier results based on covariant parton transport theory, more moderate initial parton densities dN/deta(b=0) approximately 1500-3000 can explain the differential elliptic flow v(2)(p(perpendicular)) data for Au+Au reactions at sqrt[s]=130 and 200A GeV from BNL RHIC. In addition, v(2)(p(perpendicular)) could saturate at about 50% higher values for baryons than for mesons. If strange quarks have weaker flow than light quarks, hadron v(2) at high p(perpendicular) decreases with relative strangeness content…

Particle-type dependence of azimuthal anisotropy and nuclear modification of particle production in Au+Au collisions at s(NN)**(1/2) = 200-GeV
    Star Collaboration · 2003 · cited 103 times · Not summarized yet

This STAR study reports baryon–meson differences in Au+Au elliptic flow and relates them to constituent-quark scaling and parton coalescence.

    Abstract

We present STAR measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy parameter $v_2$ and the binary-collision scaled centrality ratio $R_{CP}$ for kaons and lambdas ($\Lambda+\bar{\Lambda}$) at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. In combination, the $v_2$ and $R_{CP}$ particle-type dependencies contradict expectations from partonic energy loss followed by standard fragmentation in vacuum. We establish $p_T \approx 5$ GeV/c as the value where the centrality dependent baryon enhancement ends. The $K_S^0$ and $\Lambda+\bar{\Lambda}$ $v_2$ values are consistent with expectations of constituent-quark-number scaling from models of hadron fromation by parton coalescence or recombina…

This review surveys evidence for collectivity in small collision systems, including anisotropic flow and characteristic hadrochemical dependencies.

    Abstract

Signatures of collectivity, including azimuthally anisotropic and radial flow as well as characteristic hadrochemical dependencies, have been observed since long in (ultra)relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. They underpin the interpretation of these collision systems in terms of QGP formation and close-to-perfect fluidity. Remarkably, however, essentially all these signatures of collectivity have been identified within the last decade in collision systems as small as pp and p-Pb, where collective phenomena had been assumed to be absent traditionally. Precursor phenomena may have been found even in ep and $e^+e^-$ collisions. This article provides a complete review of all data on small s…

This model study tests hydrodynamic collectivity in proton–proton collisions and compares identified-hadron flow with measurements.

    Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the hydrodynamic collectivity in proton–proton (p–p) collisions at 13 TeV, using iEBE-VISHNU hybrid model with HIJING initial conditions. With properly tuned parameters, our model simulations can remarkably describe all the measured 2-particle correlations, including integrated and differential elliptic flow coefficients for all charged and identified hadrons ( K S 0 , Λ). However, our model calculations show positive 4-particle cumulant c 2 { 4 } in high multiplicity pp collisions, and can not reproduce the negative c 2 { 4 } measured in experiment. Further investigations on the HIJING initial conditions show that the fluctuations of the second order a…

This ATLAS study measures charged-particle azimuthal anisotropy in Pb–Pb, establishing flow measurements across transverse momentum and centrality.

    Abstract

Differential measurements of charged particle azimuthal anisotropy are presented for lead-lead collisions at root sNN = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, based on an integrated luminosity of approximately 8 mu b(-1). This anisotropy is characterized via a Fourier expansion of the distribution of charged particles in azimuthal angle relative to the reaction plane, with the coefficients v(n) denoting the magnitude of the anisotropy. Significant v(2)-v(6) values are obtained as a function of transverse momentum (0.5 = 3 are found to vary weakly with both eta and centrality, and their p(T) dependencies are found to follow an approximate scaling relation, v(n)(1/n)(p(T)) proportional t…

This hydrodynamic study predicts mass-dependent spectra and elliptic flow for different hadrons in Au+Au collisions.

    Abstract

Using a hydrodynamic model, we predict the transverse momentum dependence of the spectra and the elliptic flow for different hadrons in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s)=130 AGeV. The dependence of the differential and p{_}t-integrated elliptic flow on the hadron mass, equation of state and freeze-out temperature is studied both numerically and analytically.
