Abstract

The exponential-SWAP (eSWAP) gate generates a coherent superposition of identity and SWAP operations, with continuously tunable amplitudes. We experimentally implement this gate between two bosonic motional modes of trapped ions using spin-independent and spin-dependent beam splitter interactions. Measurements of selected slices of the joint characteristic function for distinct input states test the gate and demonstrate continuous control of the identity-SWAP superposition. This implementation provides a tunable interaction for hybrid qubit-bosonic quantum information processing.

    Abstract

Efficient overlap estimation of high-dimensional quantum states is an important task in quantum information and a core element in computational speedups of quantum machine learning. Here we experimentally demonstrate the SWAP test that measures the overlap of two motional states in a system of trapped $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}^+$ ions. To illustrate the versatility of our implementation, we report the overlap measurement of a variety of quantum states: Fock states, coherent states, squeezed vacuum states, and cat states. We highlight applications of the SWAP test by measuring the purity of mixed states. Our results enable quantum information processing with high dimensional quantum states.

    Abstract

The motional modes of trapped ions are promising candidates for continuous-variable (CV) quantum computation and simulation. However, to achieve a universal gate set for CV quantum computation, anharmonic nonlinear unitaries are required. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a protocol that allows us to approximate the cubic phase gate. By numerically optimizing the phase angles and amplitudes of a set of state-dependent force pulses, we demonstrate the cubic phase gate for both vacuum and low-$\alpha$ coherent state inputs and verify its performance. Our protocol can also be extended to approximate other nonlinear unitaries.

Programmable Quantum Simulations of Bosonic Systems with Trapped Ions.
    O. Katz, C. Monroe · 2022 · Physical Review Letters · Not summarized yet
    Abstract

Trapped atomic ion crystals are a leading platform for quantum simulations of spin systems, with programmable and long-range spin-spin interactions mediated by excitations of phonons in the crystal. We describe a complementary approach for quantum simulations of bosonic systems using phonons in trapped-ion crystals, here mediated by excitations of the trapped-ion spins. The scheme enables a high degree of programability across a dense graph of bosonic couplings, utilizing long-lived collective phonon modes in a trapped-ion chain. As such, it is well suited for tackling hard problems such as boson sampling and simulations of long-range bosonic and spin-boson Hamiltonians.

    Abstract

The hybrid approach to quantum computation simultaneously utilizes both discrete and continuous variables, which offers the advantage of higher density encoding and processing powers for the same physical resources. Trapped ions, with discrete internal states and motional modes that can be described by continuous variables in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, offer a natural platform for this approach. A nonlinear gate for universal quantum computing can be implemented with the conditional beam splitter Hamiltonian |e⟩⟨e|(a[over ^]^{†}b[over ^]+a[over ^]b[over ^]^{†}) that swaps the quantum states of two motional modes, depending on the ion's internal state. We realize such a gate and d…

Generating arbitrary superpositions of nonclassical quantum harmonic oscillator states

    Abstract

Full coherent control and generation of superpositions of the quantum harmonic oscillator are not only of fundamental interest but are crucial for applications in quantum simulations, quantum-enhanced metrology and continuous-variable quantum computation. The extension of such superpositions to nonclassical states increases their power as a resource for such applications. Here, we create arbitrary superpositions of nonclassical and non-Gaussian states of a quantum harmonic oscillator using the motion of a trapped ion coupled to its internal spin states. We interleave spin-dependent nonlinear bosonic interactions and mid-circuit measurements of the spin that preserve the coherence of the osci…

    Abstract

We investigate a non-adiabatic holonomic operation that enables us to entangle two fixed-frequency superconducting transmon qubits attached to a common bus resonator. Two coherent microwave tones are applied simultaneously to the two qubits and drive transitions between the first excited resonator state and the second excited state of each qubit. The cyclic evolution within this effective 3-level $\Lambda$-system gives rise to a holonomic operation entangling the two qubits. Two-qubit states with 95\% fidelity, limited mainly by charge-noise of the current device, are created within $213~\rm{ns}$. This scheme is a step toward implementing a SWAP-type gate directly in an all-microwave control…

    Abstract

Spin-dependent forces enable independent control over the effective frequencies of bosonic motional modes and their coupling strengths to spins in trapped-ion spin-boson quantum simulators. We show that the relative signs of these effective frequencies provide an important programmable resource for engineering distinct multimode dynamics. Focusing on a two-mode quantum Rabi model, changing the frequencies of the two modes from the same sign to opposite signs reorganizes the resonance structure of the spin-mediated bosonic interaction, converting the dominant resonant process from excitation exchange to correlated pair creation. In the dispersive regime, the resulting effective interaction re…

    Abstract

The full characterization of a continuous-variable quantum system is a challenging problem. For the trapped-ion system, a number of methods of measuring the quantum states have been developed, including the measurement of the Q quasiprobability function and the density-matrix elements in the Fock basis, but these approaches are often slow and difficult to scale to multimode states. Here, we demonstrate a novel and powerful scheme for measuring a continuous-variable quantum state that uses the direct single-shot measurement of the joint parity of the phonon states of a trapped ion. We drive a spin-dependent bichromatic beam-splitter interaction that coherently exchanges phonons between differ…

    Abstract

Quantum computation presents a powerful new paradigm for information processing. A robust universal quantum computer can be realized with any well controlled quantum system, but a successful platform will ultimately require the combination of highly coherent, error-correctable quantum elements with at least one entangling operation between them1,2. Quantum information stored in a continuous-variable system—for example, a harmonic oscillator—can take advantage of hardware-efficient quantum error correction protocols that encode information in the large available Hilbert space of each element3–5. However, such encoded states typically have no controllable direct couplings, making deterministic…

A network of bosons evolving among different modes while passing through beam splitters and phase shifters has been applied to demonstrate quantum computational advantage. While such networks have mostly been implemented in optical systems using photons, alternative realizations addressing major limitations in photonic systems such as photon loss have been explored recently. Quantized excitations of vibrational modes (phonons) of trapped ions are a promising candidate to realize such bosonic networks. Here, we demonstrate a minimal-loss programmable phononic network in which any phononic state can be deterministically prepared and detected. We realize networks with up to four collective vibr…

    Abstract

Methods for, and limitations to, the generation of entangled states of trapped atomic ions are examined. As much as possible, state manipulations are described in terms of quantum logic operations since the conditional dynamics implicit in quantum logic is central to the creation of entanglement. Keeping with current interest, some experimental issues in the proposal for trappedion quantum computation by J. I. Cirac and P. Zoller (University of Innsbruck) are discussed. Several possible decoherence mechanisms are examined and what may be the more important of these are identified. Some potential applications for entangled states of trapped-ions which lie outside the immediate realm of quantu…

    Abstract

We implement direct readout of the symmetric characteristic function of quantum states of the motional oscillation of a trapped calcium ion. Suitably chosen internal state rotations combined with internal state-dependent displacements, based on bichromatic laser fields, map the expectation value of the real or imaginary part of the displacement operator to the internal states, which are subsequently read out. Combining these results provides full information about the symmetric characteristic function. We characterize the technique by applying it to a range of archetypal quantum oscillator states, including displaced and squeezed Gaussian states as well as two and three component superpositi…

We present a study of the coherence properties of a variety of motional states of a single ion confined in a Penning ion trap. We demonstrate that the motion of the ion has a coherence time of the order of 1 s, using Ramsey interferometry. We introduce a technique for preparing the ion in an incoherent superposition of highly-excited motional states using a simple modification of optical sideband cooling. Coherent manipulation of these states allows measurements of optical and motional coherence to be carried out. We show that these highly-excited motional state superpositions have long coherence times despite the incoherent preparation of the states. Such states can be useful for sensitive …
