The widespread use of interconnectivity and interoperability of computing systems have become an indispensable necessity to enhance our daily activities. Simultaneously, it opens a path to exploitable vulnerabilities that go well beyond human control capability. The vulnerabilities deem cyber-security mechanisms essential to assume communication exchange. Secure communication requires security measures to combat the threats and needs advancements to security measures that counter evolving security threats. This paper proposes the use of deep learning architectures to develop an adaptive and resilient network intrusion detection system (IDS) to detect and classify network attacks. The emphasis is how deep learning or deep neural networks (DNNs) can facilitate flexible IDS with learning capability to detect recognized and new or zero-day network behavioral features, consequently ejecting the systems intruder and reducing the risk of compromise. To demonstrate the model’s effectiveness, we used the UNSW-NB15 dataset, reflecting real modern network communication behavior with synthetically generated attack activities.

With the growing usage of technology, intrusion detection became an emerging area of research. Intrusion Detection System (IDS) attempts to identify and notify the activities of users as normal (or) anomaly. IDS is a nonlinear and complicated problem and deals with network traffic data. Many IDS methods have been proposed and produce different levels of accuracy. This is why development of effective and robust Intrusion detection system is necessary. In this paper, we have built a model for intrusion detection system using random forest classifier. Random Forest (RF) is an ensemble classifier and performs well compared to other traditional classifiers for effective classification of attacks. To evaluate the performance of our model, we conducted experiments on NSL-KDD data set. Empirical result show that proposed model is efficient with low false alarm rate and high detection rate.

In this paper we present a new approach for network intrusion detection based on concise specifications that characterize normal and abnormal network packet sequences. Our specification language is geared for a robust network intrusion detection by enforcing a strict type discipline via a combination of static and dynamic type checking. Unlike most previous approaches in network intrusion detection, our approach can easily support new network protocols as information relating to the protocols are not hard-coded into the system. Instead, we simply add suitable type definitions in the specifications and define intrusion patterns on these types. We compile these specifications into a high-performance network intrusion detection system. Important components of our approach include efficient algorithms for pattern-matching and information aggregation on sequences of network packets. In particular, our techniques ensure that the matching time is insensitive to the number of patterns characterizing different network intrusions, and that the aggregation operations typically take constant time per packet. Our system participated in an intrusion detection evaluation organized by MIT Lincoln Labs, where our system demonstrated its effectiveness (96% detection rate on low-level network attacks) and performance (real-time detection at 500Mbps), while producing very few false positives (0.05 to 0.1 per attack).

Intrusion detection has attracted a considerable interest from researchers and industries. The community, after many years of research, still faces the problem of building reliable and efficient IDS that are capable of handling large quantities of data, with changing patterns in real time situations. The work presented in this manuscript classifies intrusion detection systems (IDS). Moreover, a taxonomy and survey of shallow and deep networks intrusion detection systems is presented based on previous and current works. This taxonomy and survey reviews machine learning techniques and their performance in detecting anomalies. Feature selection which influences the effectiveness of machine learning (ML) IDS is discussed to explain the role of feature selection in the classification and training phase of ML IDS. Finally, a discussion of the false and true positive alarm rates is presented to help researchers model reliable and efficient machine learning based intrusion detection systems.

The incremental diffusion of machine learning algorithms in supporting cybersecurity is creating novel defensive opportunities but also new types of risks. Multiple researches have shown that machine learning methods are vulnerable to adversarial attacks that create tiny perturbations aimed at decreasing the effectiveness of detecting threats. We observe that existing literature assumes threat models that are inappropriate for realistic cybersecurity scenarios, because they consider opponents with complete knowledge about the cyber detector or that can freely interact with the target systems. By focusing on Network Intrusion Detection Systems based on machine learning, we identify and model the real capabilities and circumstances required by attackers to carry out feasible and successful adversarial attacks. We then apply our model to several adversarial attacks proposed in literature and highlight the limits and merits that can result in actual adversarial attacks. The contributions of this article can help hardening defensive systems by letting cyber defenders address the most critical and real issues and can benefit researchers by allowing them to devise novel forms of adversarial attacks based on realistic threat models.

Abstract The rapid advances in the internet and communication fields have resulted in a huge increase in the network size and the corresponding data. As a result, many novel attacks are being generated and have posed challenges for network security to accurately detect intrusions. Furthermore, the presence of the intruders with the aim to launch various attacks within the network cannot be ignored. An intrusion detection system (IDS) is one such tool that prevents the network from possible intrusions by inspecting the network traffic, to ensure its confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Despite enormous efforts by the researchers, IDS still faces challenges in improving detection accuracy while reducing false alarm rates and in detecting novel intrusions. Recently, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL)‐based IDS systems are being deployed as potential solutions to detect intrusions across the network in an efficient manner. This article first clarifies the concept of IDS and then provides the taxonomy based on the notable ML and DL techniques adopted in designing network‐based IDS (NIDS) systems. A comprehensive review of the recent NIDS‐based articles is provided by discussing the strengths and limitations of the proposed solutions. Then, recent trends and advancements of ML and DL‐based NIDS are provided in terms of the proposed methodology, evaluation metrics, and dataset selection. Using the shortcomings of the proposed methods, we highlighted various research challenges and provided the future scope for the research in improving ML and DL‐based NIDS.
