Abstract: In this chapter I will clarify several characteristics of Zen in Japan which differ somewhat from those of Chinese Zen. I will also consider the character of Zen culture, culture inspired by Zen, which was created in the Muromachi period (1393–1573) and flourished until the early part of the Tokugawa period (1603–1867). These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
