Abstract: Squeezed light is now being used in a number of applications to improve the detection of light beyond the quantum noise limit associated with the photon statistics of the best classical light. This chapter starts by describing the effect of non-linear optical processes on the photon statistics and the fluctuations of the light. This is first done in a classical approach - since it is possible to see some of the key results immediately. The chapter uses two examples that are intuitive and instructive. Next, it introduces the concept of squeezed states of light rigorously. This provides the mathematical tools to analyse the experiments. Detecting squeezed light means detecting noise fluctuations. These fluctuations are very small. Finally, the chapter discusses the first experiments that have been performed since 1985 to generate squeezed light and describe the state of the art in 2018.
