Repairable Systems Reliability Analysis

Abstract: This chapter describes mean cumulative function (MCF) based non-parametric graphical approach—a simple yet powerful and informative model—to deal with failure events of systems undergoing a failure and repair cycles wherein the time to effect a repair is assumed to be negligible. A common and popular reliability metric of a repairable system is the cumulative number of failure or repair events, occurring by time (also termed as system age). The population average of cumulative number of failures (or repairs) at through time is called MCF. The chapter presents a case study regarding the Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), which allow to investigate areas that are too deep for humans to safely dive themselves. ROVs can stay underwater much longer than a human diver, expanding the time available for exploration.
