Identifying Client Emotions: Emotions You Will Encounter
Stephen Pedneault
Abstract: In this chapter, the author shares his real-world experiences to help the reader understand exactly what role client emotions can play in a fraud investigation, and how to acknowledge and address the emotions of all parties right from the start. Any individual involved in a fraud engagement will likely be nervous. Nervousness can be coupled with profuse sweating, excessive body movements like bouncing legs and wringing hands, rushed speech, and other bodily reactions. Nervousness is normal and natural reaction to being involved in fraud examination. The author presents a case that illustrates the emotional impact fraud can have on individuals, especially when family members are involved and are responsible for the fraud. When looking at all different emotions a fraud examiner witnesses on a case, crying seems much more controllable than anger and hostility. The author's past experience with swearing came into play when he had his first case involving a member of the clergy.
