Abstract: Zen evolved, moving from one country to another, through unique, individual personalities and cultural contexts, and in different time frames. During its long and fascinating travels, transformation of awareness always took place. Chapter 3 provides narratives of this evolution of Zen through the ages. As with psychotherapy, the essential quality, waking up, is always foremost. It is our hope that by partaking in the narrative history of Zen presented in this chapter, readers will walk along with the many who came before, awakening to their own awareness.
