BERT-enhanced neural machine translation (NMT) aims to leverage BERT-encoded representations for translation tasks. A recently proposed approach combines attention mechanisms with Transformer's encoder and decoder layers, using BERT's last-layer representation to improve performance. However, this method lacks flexibility in distributing attention between the BERT representation and the encoder/decoder representation. In response, this work introduces a novel BERT-enhanced NMT model called BERT-JAM that addresses these limitations. BERT-JAM improves upon existing models in two key ways. Firstly, it incorporates joint-attention modules that allow the encoder/decoder layers to dynamically allocate attention between different representations. This enables more flexible distribution of attention and enhances the model's ability to capture relevant information from both BERT and the encoder/decoder layers. Secondly, BERT-JAM utilizes BERT's intermediate representations by composing them with a gated linear unit (GLU). This allows the encoder/decoder layers to make effective use of these intermediate representations, further enhancing translation performance. To train BERT-JAM, a novel three-phase optimization strategy is employed. This strategy progressively unfreezes different components of BERT-JAM during training, enabling better convergence and improved performance. Experimental results demonstrate that BERT-JAM achieves state-of-the-art BLEU scores on multiple translation tasks. The model's ability to dynamically allocate attention and effectively utilize both BERT and intermediate representations contributes to its superior performance compared to existing approaches. Overall, this work presents a comprehensive solution for enhancing neural machine translation using BERT-encoded representations. The proposed BERT-JAM model demonstrates significant improvements in translation quality by leveraging joint-attention modules and incorporating intermediate representations from BERT through a gated linear unit composition.

BERT-Enhanced Neural Machine Translation: Introducing BERT-JAM
Recent advancements in natural language processing (NLP) have enabled the development of powerful neural machine translation (NMT) models. However, existing NMT models are limited in their ability to capture relevant information from different sources. To address this limitation, researchers have proposed leveraging representations encoded by Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT). This approach has shown promising results for improving translation performance.
In response, a novel BERT-enhanced NMT model called BERT-JAM has been developed that addresses existing limitations and achieves state-of-the-art performance on multiple translation tasks. In this article, we will discuss the key features of BERT-JAM and how it improves upon existing approaches. We will also explore the three-phase optimization strategy used to train the model and its impact on overall performance.
Background: Leveraging BERT for Improved NMT Performance
The use of pre-trained language models such as BERT has become increasingly popular in recent years due to their ability to capture contextual information from large datasets. This capability can be leveraged to improve NMT performance by incorporating representations encoded by these models into an encoder/decoder architecture.
A recently proposed approach combines attention mechanisms with Transformer's encoder and decoder layers, using BERT's last layer representation to improve performance. However, this method lacks flexibility in distributing attention between the BERT representation and the encoder/decoder representation.
Introducing BERT-JAM
To address these limitations, researchers have developed a novel model called “BERT Joint Attention Model” or “BERT JAM” for short. This model improves upon existing approaches in two key ways: joint attention modules and gated linear unit composition with intermediate representations from BERT .
The first improvement is through joint attention modules which allow the encoder/decoder layers to dynamically allocate attention between different representations; enabling more flexible distribution of attention and enhancing the model's ability to capture relevant information from both sources - i.e., both Bert’s last layer representation as well as those provided by the encoders/decoders themselves . Secondly ,Bert Jam utilizes intermediate representations from Bert via a gated linear unit composition , allowing effective utilization of these intermediate representations further enhancing translation accuracy .
Optimization Strategy
To train Bert Jam ,a novel three phase optimization strategy is employed which progressively unfreezes different components during training thus enabling better convergence & improved accuracy . The first phase involves freezing all parameters except those related to Bert while training; followed by unfreezing all parameters except those related to encoding & decoding ; finally unfreezing all parameters including those related bert at once .
Results
Experimental results demonstrate that Bert Jam achieves state of art Bleu scores on multiple translation tasks compared with other methods ; proving its superior capabilities when it comes translating text accurately & effectively utilizing both bert & intermediate representations via gated linear units .
Conclusion
In conclusion ,this work presents a comprehensive solution for enhancing neural machine translations using bert encoded representations through its novel bert jam model which demonstrates significant improvements over previous works thanks largely due its dynamic allocation of attentions & effective utilization of both berts last layer representation as well as intermediate ones via GLU composition .
