Symmetry and topology, encoded in electronic wavefunctions, play a central role in the electronic properties and emergent phenomena of quantum materials. While these properties are conventionally determined by the equilibrium Hamiltonian, strong optical fields offer a fundamentally different route by reshaping the Hamiltonian on ultrafast timescales, turning symmetry and topology into dynamically controllable degrees of freedom. Graphene provides a paradigmatic platform for realizing this concept, where circularly polarized light has long been predicted to dynamically break time-reversal symmetry (TRS) and open a topologically nontrivial gap at the Dirac point. Despite extensive experimental efforts, direct observation of this Dirac gap-the defining spectroscopic signature of the dynamical TRS-breaking induced topological phase-has remained missing. Here we directly observe this light-induced Dirac gap in monolayer graphene. Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals that the gap emerges simultaneously with the optical field and exclusively under circularly polarized driving, directly linking its opening to dynamical TRS breaking. Together with Floquet theory, we identify the gap with a light-induced Haldane mass and reveal the associated nontrivial Floquet Berry curvature and Chern topology. By demonstrating dynamical TRS breaking in a prototypical non-magnetic material, our results establish optical driving as a route to ultrafast engineering of symmetry and topology, opening opportunities for dynamically tunable quantum matter beyond equilibrium.

Observation of light-induced topological state in grapheneS.
Driving quantum materials with light can reshape not only their electronic band structures but also the geometry of their electronic wavefunctions. In graphene, circularly polarized light is predicted to open gaps at the Dirac points and induce a pseudospin texture and Berry curvature characteristic of the Haldane model, realizing a Floquet Chern insulator. Transport and all-optical measurements have provided evidence for a light-induced anomalous Hall response, but cannot resolve the underlying electronic states in both energy and momentum space. Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has revealed Floquet-Bloch sidebands and hybridization gaps at crossings between Floquet bands…

Attosecond Quantum Optical Spectroscopy of Topological MaterialsC.
High-harmonic generation (HHG) provides an ultrafast probe of quantum materials, yet conventional spectral observables do not generally furnish a common signature of band topology. Here we show that quantum-light-driven HHG opens an additional information channel through the photon statistics of the emitted harmonics. Using the Haldane Chern insulator and the time-reversal-invariant Kane-Mele topological insulator, we calculate helicity-resolved equal-time intensity correlations and identify a common enhancement of high-order harmonic correlations in the topological phases. For the Haldane model, a dichroic correlation constructed from opposite helicity channels reverses sign with the Chern …

Observation of a hole-side v = 7/2 fractional quantum hall state in trilayer grapheneBo-Yuan Wei, Feng-Yi Guo, Zheng Dai et al. · 2026 · Nanotechnology · Pas encore résumé
« Observation of a hole-side v = 7/2 fractional quantum hall state in trilayer graphene » observe un état de Hall quantique fractionnaire dans le graphène, plutôt qu’un gap de Floquet induit par la lumière.
Résumé scientifique
The intertwined many-body correlation, nontrivial topology, and symmetry can lead to exotic low-energy quasiparticle excitation, such as fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, Fermi liquids, etc. Some FQH states with even denominators appearing at the half-filling of Landau levels can be interpreted by Moore-Read theory, and the corresponding composite fermions satisfy non-Abelian statistics and have the potential to realize topological quantum computation. Possessing extraordinary tunability that stems from the intricate interplay of spin, valley, and orbital degrees of freedom, few-layer graphene stands out as an ideal platform for studying the FQH effect. Here we report the observation of …

Visualizing Berry curvature in a Floquet-Chern insulatorYounsik Kim, Rishi Acharya, H. Aguirre et al. · 2026 · cité 1 fois · Pas encore résumé
« Visualizing Berry curvature in a Floquet-Chern insulator » utilise la TrARPES à dichroïsme circulaire pour cartographier la courbure de Berry induite par la lumière, sur Bi₂Se₃.
Résumé scientifique
Circularly polarized light can open a topological gap in a gapless Dirac system, creating a Floquet-Chern insulator. However, its Berry curvature has not been directly resolved. Here we use circular-dichroism time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (Tr-ARPES) to map the light-induced Berry curvature of Floquet-Bloch states on the surface of Bi$_2$Se$_3$. By comparing spectra for opposite helicities of the mid-infrared pump, we isolate the induced geometric response. We observe alternating-sign Berry-curvature features at Floquet gaps that repeat at intervals set by the pump photon energy and redistribute with pump field strength in agreement with calculations for a periodically d…

Nonlinear optical responses of semiconducting graphene nanoribbons: Strong constraint from a hidden symmetryJia-Wei Ruan, Wei-Chen Tang, Yang-Hao Chan et al. · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
« Nonlinear optical responses of semiconducting graphene nanoribbons » examine comment une symétrie cachée contraint les réponses optiques non linéaires dans des nanorubans de graphène.
Résumé scientifique
Nonlinear optical (NLO) responses are powerful tools for probing material structures, as they are highly sensitive to spatial symmetries. For instance, it is well known that having inversion symmetry forbids even-order NLO effects. Here, we show that nonspatial symmetries can also significantly constrain NLO responses. In graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with bipartite-lattice structures, we identify the approximate bipartite-lattice particle-hole (BLPH) symmetry strongly suppresses even-order NLO effects, even for systems with no inversion symmetry. Importantly, we demonstrate that this approximate symmetry enables the optical generation of nearly pure spin shift currents in ferromagnetic GNRs, …

Phonon-mediated closing of topological Floquet gaps in graphene: Non-phenomenological analysisRoyi Ledermann, Rave Hanoch Saadon, Adam Herling et al. · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
« Phonon-mediated closing of topological Floquet gaps in graphene » étudie théoriquement l’effet des phonons sur les bandes topologiques de Floquet du graphène éclairé circulairement.
Résumé scientifique
Floquet band engineering has been intensively studied for its potential to control material properties via laser driving. In particular, Floquet topological states have been measured on the surface of Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Nonetheless, the original prediction of Floquet topological bands in graphene remains unobserved, with works only measuring non-topological Floquet-Bloch states or indirect features. Here, we theoretically explore graphene irradiated by circular lasers with non-phenomenological electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling. We show that e-ph interactions substantially broaden Floquet bands due to graphene's large zero-point motion, as expected from phenomenological treatments. However, we furth…

Enhanced Terahertz Emission Enabled by Circular Photogalvanic Effect.
Topological materials host exotic phenomena rooted in their distinctive band topology, where band splitting plays a central role in spin transport and nonlinear optical responses. Terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy provides a time-resolved probe of carrier dynamics governed by band splitting. In ferromagnet-topological material heterostructures, THz emission is typically attributed to spin-to-charge conversion (SCC). However, emerging experimental observations indicate that the SCC mechanism alone cannot fully account for the dominant origin of THz emission in certain systems, the potential contribution of band splitting in topological materials remaining unexplored. Here, we demonstrate …

Spatial Engineering of Topological Quantum Matter with Structured LightMatias Mustonen, A. G. Moghaddam, T. Ojanen et al. · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
« Spatial Engineering of Topological Quantum Matter with Structured Light » montre comment une lumière structurée module localement les gaps topologiques et les vitesses de Dirac.
Résumé scientifique
Structured light provides a powerful means of controlling matter while itself exhibiting nontrivial spatial topology. Here, we show that these spatial structures can be harnessed to locally engineer the topological properties of matter. In a paradigmatic example of a topological insulator with Dirac surface states driven by an optical skyrmion beam, we show that structured light spatially tailors the effective Hamiltonian, yielding position-dependent topological gaps and Dirac velocities. The resulting gap modulation can create topological and trivial regions separated by optically defined interfaces, without introducing material boundaries or chemical modifications. We further show that the…
