Résumé scientifique
Knowing the chemical composition of interstellar gas is essential for understanding the chemical evolution of galaxies. Ionized nebulae provide key laboratories for this purpose, where chemical abundances are commonly derived from emission lines of heavy ions such as doubly ionized oxygen, $O^{++}$. Abundances can be inferred either from collisionally excited lines (CELs) or from recombination lines (RLs). However, for more than 80 years, the former have yielded systematically lower abundances than the latter. We map this ''abundance discrepancy'' using the first spatially resolved integral field unit (IFU) observations of $O^{++}$ RLs and CELs across a Milky Way H II region: the Lagoon Nebula (a.k.a. M8). Modeling the data using a plasma temperature perturbation model, we present unequivocal evidence that electron temperature ($T_e$) fluctuations drive the abundance discrepancy in M8. We find a tight correlation between the abundance discrepancy and the difference between $T_e$ derived from the classical CEL method and a hybrid RL/CEL approach. We identify this Te discrepancy as an observational proxy for the amplitude of the thermal fluctuations, providing a new, direct way to quantify their effect on nebular abundances. The correlation constrains the mean electron temperature of the gas. Adopting this mean temperature reconciles CEL and RL abundances, effectively eliminating the abundance discrepancy.

The resolved chemical composition of the starburst dwarf galaxy CGCG007-025: Direct method versus photoionization model fittingVital Fernández, Ricardo Amorín, Rubén Sanchez-Janssen et al. · 2022 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · cité 3 fois · Résumé IA disponible
This work focuses on the gas chemical composition of CGCG007-025. This compact dwarf is undergoing a galaxy wide star forming burst, whose spatial behaviour has been observed by VLT/MUSE. We present a new line measurement library to treat almost 7800 voxels. The direct method chemical analysis is limited to 484 voxels with good detection of the $[SIII]$6312$\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$ temperature diagnostic line. The recombination fluxes are corrected for stellar absorption via a population synthesis. Additionally, we discuss a new algorithm to fit photoionization models via neural networks. The 8 ionic abundances analyzed show a spatial normal distribution with a $\sigma\sim0.1\,dex$, where only…

Inhomogeneous Galactic Chemical Evolution: Modelling Ultra-Faint Dwarf Galaxies of the Large Magellanic CloudRyan K. Alexander, Fiorenzo Vincenzo, Alexander P. Ji et al. · 2023 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · cité 10 fois · Résumé IA disponible
Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies are among the oldest and most metal-poor galaxies in the cosmos, observed to contain no traces of gas at the present time and a high dark matter mass fraction. Understanding the chemical abundance dispersion in such extreme environments could shed light on the properties of the first generations of stars in the cosmos. We present a novel inhomogeneous chemical evolution model, i-GEtool, that we apply to two ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, Carina II (Car II) and Reticulum II (Ret II), which are satellites of the Large Magellanic Cloud. In summary, our model is based on the Monte Carlo sampling of the initial mass function as star formation proceeds in different gas cell…

JADES: Detecting [OIII]$λ4363$ Emitters and Testing Strong Line Calibrations in the High-$z$ Universe with Ultra-deep JWST/NIRSpec Spectroscopy up to $z \sim 9.5$Isaac H. Laseter, Michael V. Maseda, Mirko Curti et al. · 2023 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · cité 46 fois · Résumé IA disponible
We present 10 novel [OIII]$\lambda 4363$ auroral line detections up to $z\sim 9.5$ measured from ultra-deep JWST/NIRSpec MSA spectroscopy from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). We leverage the deepest spectroscopic observations yet taken with NIRSpec to determine electron temperatures and oxygen abundances using the direct T$_e$ method. We directly compare against a suite of locally calibrated strong-line diagnostics and recent high-$z$ calibrations. We find the calibrations fail to simultaneously match our JADES sample, thus warranting a self-consistent revision of these calibrations for the high-$z$ Universe. We find weak dependence between R2 and O3O2 with metallicity, …

The chemical evolution of the LMC from APOGEE abundances: a hybrid two-infall OMEGA+ analysisErik Gasteiger, V. Hegedűs, Szabolcs M'esz'aros · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) provides resolved stellar abundances and star-formation histories that can be used together to test models of dwarf-galaxy chemical evolution. We investigated if the non-monotonic APOGEE $[\mathrm{Mg}/\mathrm{Fe}]$-$[\mathrm{Fe}/\mathrm{H}]$ sequence can be explained by a hybrid history that combines a second gas-infall episode with a temporary increase in star-formation efficiency (SFE). We selected 4933 LMC red-giant-branch stars from APOGEE-2 DR17. We fitted an adaptively binned median Mg sequence with the two-zone open-box code OMEGA+. The formal fitting objective contained only the Mg sequence. The metallicity distribution function (MDF), one-dimensional…

Chemical Cartography with APOGEE: Mapping Disk Populations with a Two-Process Model and Residual AbundancesDavid H. Weinberg, Jon A. Holtzman, Jennifer A. Johnson et al. · 2021 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · cité 28 fois · Résumé IA disponible
We apply a novel statistical analysis to measurements of 16 elemental abundances in 34,410 Milky Way disk stars from the final data release (DR17) of APOGEE-2. Building on recent work, we fit median abundance ratio trends [X/Mg] vs. [Mg/H] with a 2-process model, which decomposes abundance patterns into a "prompt" component tracing core collapse supernovae and a "delayed" component tracing Type Ia supernovae. For each sample star, we fit the amplitudes of these two components, then compute the residuals \Delta[X/H] from this two-parameter fit. The rms residuals range from ~0.01-0.03 dex for the most precisely measured APOGEE abundances to ~0.1 dex for Na, V, and Ce. The correlations of resid…

The LBT Y$_{\rm p}$ Project VI: Gas-Phase Chemical Abundance Patterns of Metal-Poor NebulaeN.
Through a combined rest-optical and NIR observing campaign, the Large Binocular Telescope Primordial He Abundance ($Y_{\rm p}$) Project has delivered a precision measurement of $Y_{\rm p}$. Given the stringent requirements to measure gas-phase He abundances, the optical spectra contain emission features from a plethora of metals in the Interstellar Medium (ISM). We present gas-phase N, O, Ne, S, Cl, Ar, K and Fe abundance patterns in 62 low-metallicity nebulae. We assess ionization correction factors for each element and select those that reproduce the observed ionic abundance trends. The Ne/O, S/O, and Ar/O abundances do not evolve with metallicity and agree with the solar ratios. Given the…

Predicting the intensity mapping signal for multi-$J$ CO linesNatalie Mashian, Amiel Sternberg, Abraham Loeb · 2015 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · cité 36 fois · Résumé IA disponible
We present a novel approach to estimating the intensity mapping signal of any CO rotational line emitted during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Our approach is based on large velocity gradient (LVG) modeling, a radiative transfer modeling technique that generates the full CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) for a specified gas kinetic temperature, volume density, velocity gradient, molecular abundance, and column density. These parameters, which drive the physics of CO transitions and ultimately dictate the shape and amplitude of the CO SLED, can be linked to the global properties of the host galaxy, mainly the star formation rate (SFR) and the SFR surface density. By further employ…

Many elements matter: Detailed abundance patterns reveal star-formation and enrichment differences among Milky Way structural componentsEmily J. Griffith, David W. Hogg, Sten Hasselquist et al. · 2024 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · cité 9 fois · Résumé IA disponible
Many nucleosynthetic channels create the elements, but two-parameter models characterized by $\alpha$ and Fe nonetheless predict stellar abundances in the Galactic disk to accuracies of 0.02 to 0.05 dex for most measured elements, near the level of current abundance uncertainties. It is difficult to make individual measurements more precise than this to investigate lower-amplitude nucleosynthetic effects, but population studies of mean abundance patterns can reveal more subtle abundance differences. Here we look at the detailed abundances for 67315 stars from APOGEE DR17, but in the form of abundance residuals away from a best-fit two-parameter, data-driven nucleosynthetic model. We find tha…
