Résumé scientifique

We discuss the QCD equation of state at temperatures above the crossover and for high baryon chemical potentials, obtained via the first ever complex Langevin simulations at the physical pion mass. In particular, we present continuum-extrapolated results for the energy, entropy, and enthalpy densities, as well as for the specific heat capacity as a function of baryon chemical potential and temperature.

Equation of state of hot and dense QCD using the complex Langevin equation
    Michael Mandl, D. Sexty, D. Unterhuber · 2026 · cité 1 fois · Pas encore résumé

«Equation of state of hot and dense QCD» calcule densité baryonique, pression et anomalie de trace, tandis que l’article étudie d’autres densités thermodynamiques par Langevin complexe au point physique.

    Résumé scientifique

We present continuum-extrapolated lattice results for the QCD equation of state at high temperatures and unprecedentedly large baryon chemical potentials. These results were obtained by performing the first complex Langevin simulations at the physical value of the pion mass. We work in a strangeness-neutral, charm-neutral, and isospin-symmetric setup and show results for the baryon density, pressure, and trace anomaly as a function of baryon chemical potential and temperature, respectively.

Finite-density equation of state of hot QCD using the complex Langevin equation
    Michael Mandl, D. Sexty, D. Unterhuber · 2026 · Physical Review D · cité 4 fois · Pas encore résumé

We present the results of continuum-extrapolated lattice simulations of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) above the crossover temperature and for unprecedentedly high baryon densities at the physical point, employing the complex Langevin equation. In particular, we determine the QCD equation of state by computing the baryon density as well as the pressure as functions of the baryon chemical potential and the temperature. Potential issues with wrong convergence of complex Langevin dynamics are under control and we indeed find agreement with previous lattice studies working at smaller chemical potentials, as well as with perturbative hard-thermal-loop calculations at high temperatures.

Calculating the equation of state of dense quark-gluon plasma using the complex Langevin equation

The pressure and energy density of the quark-gluon plasma at finite baryon chemical potential are calculated using the Complex Langevin equation. The stout smearing procedure is generalized for the SL(3,$\mathcal{C}$) manifold allowing the usage of an improved action in the Complex Langevin setup. Four degenerate flavors of staggered quarks with $m_\pi=500-700$ MeV are used with a tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action on $16^3 \times 8 $ lattices. Results are compared to the Taylor expansion and good agreement is found for small chemical potentials.

We compute the equation of state of dense and magnetized strongly interacting matter using lattice QCD at a non-zero value of the lattice spacing. Our simulations employ $2+1+1$ dynamical flavors of rooted staggered quarks with masses tuned to the physical point. To conform with experimental constraints, we impose strangeness neutrality and isospin asymmetry on our observables. We circumvent the sign problem by simulating imaginary values of the chemical potential and applying the $T'$-expansion scheme to carry out the analytic continuation of our observables to the real chemical potential axis. This novel scheme, adapted to the setup with nonzero magnetic fields, is demonstrated to produce …

We calculate a resummed equation of state with lattice QCD simulations at imaginary chemical potentials. This work presents a generalization of the scheme introduced in 2102.06660 to the case of non-zero $\mu_S$, focusing on the line of strangeness neutrality. We present results up to $\mu_B/T \leq 3.5$ on the strangeness neutral line $\left\langle S \right\rangle = 0$ in the temperature range $130 \rm{MeV} \leq T \leq 280 \rm{MeV}$. We also extrapolate the finite baryon density equation of state to small non-zero values of the strangeness-to-baryon ratio $R=\left\langle S \right\rangle / \left\langle B \right\rangle$. We perform a continuum extrapolation using lattice simulations of the 4st…

Expansion schemes for finite density QCD equation of state: which one is the best?

The finite density equation of state of QCD is a fundamental quantity for understanding the phase structure of the theory, and also for the realistic modeling of the QCD medium in simulations. While direct lattice simulations at finite density are extremely challenging, several expansion schemes have been devised to extrapolate into the QCD phase diagram. All of these schemes are based on susceptibilities of conserved charges, i.e. derivatives of the pressure with respect to the chemical potential(s). In this work we set out to determine which of these schemes possesses the best convergence properties. To this end, we employ extreme-statistics lattice simulations on a $16^3\times8$ lattice, …

Heavy-ion collisions provide unique access to the properties of QCD matter over a broad range of temperatures and baryon densities. We review recent progress in constraining the high-density phase structure of QCD, with particular emphasis on the microscopic inputs required for reliable transport modeling. We discuss cluster production, strange-particle interactions, collision dynamics at few-GeV energies, and the isospin dependence of the nuclear interaction, together with their impact on the interpretation of flow, yields, fluctuations, and possible critical signatures.

Deconfinement transition line with the complex Langevin equation up to μ/T∼5
    Manuel Scherzer, D. Sexty, I. Stamatescu · 2020 · Physical Review D · cité 22 fois · Pas encore résumé

We study the deconfinement transition line in QCD for quark chemical potentials up to $\mu_q \sim 5 T$ ($\mu_B \sim 15 T$). To circumvent the sign problem we use the complex Langevin equation with gauge cooling. The plaquette gauge action is used with two flavors of naive Wilson fermions at a relatively heavy pion mass of roughly 1.3 GeV. A quadratic dependence describes the transition line well on the whole chemical potential range.

The sign problem obstructs the determination of the QCD phase diagram in the temperature-baryon chemical potential plane using lattice QCD. We review the sign problem in QCD and related field theories, including applications to real-time dynamics. We focus on approaches where the sign problem can potentially be solved or controlled, irrespective of its severeness. These include holomorphic extensions -- Lefschetz thimbles, holomorphic flow, contour deformations, and complex Langevin dynamics --, and the introduction of new degrees of freedom -- dual variables and the tensor renormalisation group. We also highlight directions in which machine learning approaches have shown promise. Since many…

Stochastic quantization offers the opportunity to simulate field theories with a complex action. In some theories unstable trajectories are prevalent when a constant stepsize is employed. We construct algorithms for generating an adaptive stepsize in complex Langevin simulations and find that unstable trajectories are completely eliminated. To illustrate the generality of the approach, we apply it to the three-dimensional XY model at nonzero chemical potential and the heavy dense limit of QCD.

An analytic method of smearing link variables in lattice QCD is proposed and tested. The differentiability of the smearing scheme with respect to the link variables permits the use of modern Monte Carlo updating methods based on molecular dynamics evolution for gauge-field actions constructed using such smeared links. In examining the smeared mean plaquette and the static quark-antiquark potential, no degradation in effectiveness is observed as compared to link smearing methods currently in use, although an increased sensitivity to the smearing parameter is found.
