Résumé scientifique

Classical Coulomb crystals and quantum Wigner crystals typically arise when repulsive interactions order like-charged particles in spatially confined environments. Here, we show that transient crystallization can also emerge in freely propagating electron pulses without external trapping. Experimentally, we use a transmission electron microscope to measure number-resolved energy correlations in photoemitted pulses containing up to nine electrons, revealing strong correlations at small particle numbers that progressively disappear in the pulse interior as the number increases. To explain these observations, we combine many-body simulations with a one-dimensional statistical-mechanical model, showing that the leading and trailing electrons generate a self-induced longitudinal potential that transiently confines the inner particles, enabling the formation of an ordered chain during propagation. The resulting crystallization phase diagram reveals how many-body ordering dynamics can be understood in terms of evolving macroscopic beam properties, namely its geometry and the ratio of the mean Coulomb interaction energy to the longitudinal thermal energy. Extending this framework, we theoretically demonstrate that weak transverse guiding through electrostatic or optical ponderomotive forces can sustain crystallization at larger particle numbers and predict spontaneous longitudinal periodic bunching in continuous electron beams. Our results identify conditions under which stochastic Coulomb interactions can be harnessed to generate self-structured, strongly correlated electron beams in both pulsed and continuous regimes.

Ion Coulomb crystals: An exotic form of condensed matter

« Ion Coulomb crystals » décrit des ions ordonnés par répulsion coulombienne dans un piège, contrairement aux impulsions électroniques libres étudiées ici.

    Résumé scientifique

Ion Coulomb crystals are ordered structures formed by laser-cooled ions in traps that are characterized by interparticle distances of several micrometers and energy scales on the order of $\mu$eV. Their crystalline structure emerges from the interplay between Coulomb repulsion and the external confining potential, which can be readily tuned. Moreover, individual ions can be precisely manipulated with lasers and imaged via resonance fluorescence. These unusual and unique properties make ion crystals a powerful platform for studying phases of matter in the strongly correlated regime and at low temperatures where their dynamics is manifestly quantum mechanical. This review examines the theoreti…

Coulomb-correlated electron number states in a transmission electron microscope beam

« Coulomb-correlated electron number states » mesure par spectroscopie les corrélations énergétiques de petits états électroniques libres photoémis dans un microscope électronique.

    Résumé scientifique

While correlated electrons are at the heart of many phenomena in condensed matter, as well as atomic and molecular physics, Coulomb interactions in free-electron beams are generally considered detrimental. Here, we demonstrate the generation of Coulomb-correlated pair, triple and quadruple states of free electrons by femtosecond photoemission from a nanoscale field emitter inside a transmission electron microscope. Event-based electron spectroscopy allows the spatial and spectral characterization of the electron ensemble emitted by each laser pulse. We identify distinctive energy and momentum correlations arising from acceleration-enhanced interparticle energy exchange, revealing strong few-…

« Quantum Melting of a Disordered Wigner Solid » image la cristallisation et la fusion quantique d’électrons dans un gaz bidimensionnel, plutôt que dans des impulsions libres.

    Résumé scientifique

The behavior of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in extreme coupling limits are reasonably well-understood, but our understanding of intermediate region remains limited. Strongly interacting electrons crystalize into a solid phase known as the Wigner crystal at very low densities, and these evolve to a Fermi liquid at high densities. At intermediate densities, however, where the Wigner crystal melts into a strongly correlated electron fluid that is poorly understood partly due to a lack of microscopic probes for delicate quantum phases. Here we report the first imaging of a disordered Wigner solid and its quantum densification and quantum melting behavior in a bilayer MoSe2 using a non-in…

« Femtosecond and Attosecond Phase-Space Correlations » cartographie les corrélations en espace des phases d’états photoélectroniques à deux électrons.

    Résumé scientifique

Temporal correlations in pulsed electron beams reflect the microscopic dynamics of emission and interparticle interaction. In femtosecond electron emission from nanoscale field emitters, Coulomb interactions result in structured few-electron states with strong correlations in energy, time, and transverse momentum. Interactions with external fields may be used to both probe and further manipulate these correlated states. Here, we combine femtosecond-gated, event-based detection with inelastic electron-light scattering to directly map the photoelectron phase-space distribution of two-electron states. Our experiments demonstrate a bimodal structure in longitudinal phase space, with distinct con…

« Resonant inelastic tunneling » modélise le transport électronique dans des jonctions moléculaires avec couplage électron-phonon, sans étudier l’ordre d’impulsions libres.

    Résumé scientifique

Within a phonon-assisted resonance level model we develop a self-consistent procedure for calculating electron transport currents in molecular junctions with intermediate to strong electron-phonon interaction. The scheme takes into account the mutual influence of the electron and phonon subsystems. It is based on the 2nd order cumulant expansion, used to express the correlation function of the phonon shift generator in terms of the phonon momentum Green function. Equation of motion (EOM) method is used to obtain an approximate analog of the Dyson equation for the electron and phonon Green functions in the case of many-particle operators present in the Hamiltonian. To zero-order it is similar…

« Quantum coherent optical phase modulation » étudie la manipulation cohérente de faisceaux d’électrons libres par la lumière, et non leur ordre coulombien.

    Résumé scientifique

Coherent manipulation of quantum systems with light is expected to be a cornerstone of future information and communication technology, including quantum computation and cryptography. The transfer of an optical phase onto a quantum wavefunction is a defining aspect of coherent interactions and forms the basis of quantum state preparation, synchronization and metrology. Light-phase-modulated electron states near atoms and molecules are essential for the techniques of attosecond science, including the generation of extreme-ultraviolet pulses and orbital tomography. In contrast, the quantum-coherent phase-modulation of energetic free-electron beams has not been demonstrated, although it promise…
