Résumé scientifique

Gravitational-wave (GW) observations of binary black holes provide a powerful probe of general relativity (GR) in the strong-field regime. In effective field theory (EFT) extensions of GR, higher-curvature operators modify the binary dynamics and introduce corrections to the inspiral phase. In this work, we consider two parity-even cubic-curvature couplings and one quartic-curvature coupling, whose leading phase corrections enter at 5PN, 6PN, and 8PN order, respectively. We incorporate these corrections into the individual multipoles of the \texttt{SEOBNRv5HM\_ROM} waveform using the flexible theory-independent framework, allowing higher-order modes and the full inspiral-merger-ringdown signal to be used in the analysis. We first perform a Fisher-matrix analysis of 92 binary-black-hole events selected from a parent sample of 273 events in the public LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA catalogs. GW230627\_015337 provides the tightest forecast constraints on all three EFT couplings and is therefore selected for a full Bayesian analysis. The posterior distributions are consistent with GR, with all three couplings consistent with zero at 90\% credibility. The corresponding one-sided 90\% upper limits on the characteristic length scales are \(17.1\), \(11.1\), and \(18.3\,\mathrm{km}\). The log Bayes factors of the three EFT models relative to GR range from \(-5.49\) to \(-2.51\), favoring GR under the adopted priors. These bounds probe higher-curvature length scales at the level of \(10\)--\(20\,\mathrm{km}\) and are numerically tighter than representative previous inspiral and ringdown constraints, although differences in the models and analysis assumptions should be taken into account.

    Résumé scientifique

Effective field theory methods allow us to modify general relativity through higher-curvature corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action, while preserving Lorentz invariance and the number of gravitational degrees of freedom. We here construct an approximate inspiral-merger-ringdown waveform model within the cubic, parity-preserving class of effective-field-theory extensions to Einstein's theory for the gravitational waves emitted by quasi-circular binary black holes with aligned/anti-aligned spins. Using this waveform model, we first explore the detectability of non-Einsteinian effective-field-theory effects through an extended version of effective cycles to illustrate the need to include n…

    Résumé scientifique

Gravitational-wave observations of coalescing binary systems allow for novel tests of the strong-field regime of gravity. Using data from the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center (GWOSC) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors, we place the first constraints on an effective--field-theory based extension of General Relativity in which higher-order curvature terms are added to the Einstein-Hilbert action. We construct gravitational-wave templates describing the quasi-circular, adiabatic inspiral phase of binary black holes in this extended theory of gravity. Then, after explaining how to properly take into account the region of validity of the effective field theory when performing tests of General …

Black Hole Spectroscopy and Tests of General Relativity with GW250114
The LIGO Scientific Collaboration, the Virgo Collaboration, the KAGRA Collaboration · 2025 · General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology · cité 124 fois · Résumé IA disponible

Cette analyse teste la nature de Kerr du résidu par ses modes quasi normaux, plutôt que les couplages EFT dans la phase orbitale.

    Résumé scientifique

The binary black hole signal GW250114, the loudest gravitational wave detected to date, offers a unique opportunity to test Einstein's general relativity (GR) in the high-velocity, strong-gravity regime and probe whether the remnant conforms to the Kerr metric. Upon perturbation, black holes emit a spectrum of damped sinusoids with specific, complex frequencies. Our analysis of the post-merger signal shows that at least two quasi-normal modes are required to explain the data, with the most damped remaining statistically significant for about one cycle. We probe the remnant's Kerr nature by constraining the spectroscopic pattern of the dominant quadrupolar ($\ell = m = 2$) mode and its first …

Tests of general relativity at the fourth post-Newtonian order
Poulami Dutta Roy, Sayantani Datta, K. G. Arun · 2024 · General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology · cité 3 fois · Résumé IA disponible

Cette étude évalue par matrice de Fisher les tests de la phase post-newtonienne jusqu’à 4,5PN, contrairement aux corrections EFT à 5PN, 6PN et 8PN.

    Résumé scientifique

The recently computed post-Newtonian (PN) gravitational-wave phasing up to 4.5PN order accounts for several novel physical effects in compact binary dynamics such as the {\it tail of the memory, tails of tails of tails and tails of mass hexadecupole and current octupole moments}. Therefore, it is instructive to assess the ability of current-generation (2G) detectors such as LIGO/Virgo, next-generation (XG) ground-based gravitational wave detectors such as Cosmic Explorer/Einstein Telescope and space-based detectors like LISA to test the predictions of PN theory at these orders. Employing Fisher information matrix, we find that the projected bounds on the deviations from the logarithmic PN ph…

    Résumé scientifique

We perform tests of General Relativity (GR) with gravitational waves (GWs) from the inspiral stage of compact binaries using a theory-independent framework, which adds generic phase corrections to each multipole of a GR waveform model in frequency domain. This method has been demonstrated on LIGO-Virgo observations to provide stringent constraints on post-Newtonian predictions of the inspiral and to assess systematic biases that may arise in such parameterized tests. Here, we detail the anatomy of our framework for aligned-spin waveform models. We explore the effects of higher modes in the underlying signal on tests of GR through analyses of two unequal-mass, simulated binary signals similar…

Cette étude accélère les calculs de vraisemblance des tests paramétrés et évalue leur sensibilité, fournissant un cadre général aux contraintes sur les écarts à GR.

    Résumé scientifique

Thanks to the recent discoveries of gravitational wave signals from binary black hole mergers by Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory and Advanced Virgo, the genuinely strong-field dynamics of spacetime can now be probed, allowing for stringent tests of general relativity (GR). One set of tests consists of allowing for parametrized deformations away from GR in the template waveform models and then constraining the size of the deviations, as was done for the detected signals in previous work. In this paper, we construct reduced-order quadratures so as to speed up likelihood calculations for parameter estimation on future events. Next, we explicitly demonstrate the robu…

    Résumé scientifique

The ever-increasing number of detections of gravitational waves (GWs) from compact binaries by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors allows us to perform ever-more sensitive tests of general relativity (GR) in the dynamical and strong-field regime of gravity. We perform a suite of tests of GR using the compact binary signals observed during the second half of the third observing run of those detectors. We restrict our analysis to the 15 confident signals that have false alarm rates $\leq 10^{-3}\, {\rm yr}^{-1}$. In addition to signals consistent with binary black hole (BH) mergers, the new events include GW200115_042309, a signal consistent with a neutron star--BH merger. We find t…

    Résumé scientifique

Gravitational waves enable tests of general relativity in the highly dynamical and strong-field regime. Using events detected by LIGO-Virgo up to 1 October 2019, we evaluate the consistency of the data with predictions from the theory. We first establish that residuals from the best-fit waveform are consistent with detector noise, and that the low- and high-frequency parts of the signals are in agreement. We then consider parametrized modifications to the waveform by varying post-Newtonian and phenomenological coefficients, improving past constraints by factors of ${\sim}2$; we also find consistency with Kerr black holes when we specifically target signatures of the spin-induced quadrupole m…

    Résumé scientifique

Detecting gravitational waves from coalescing compact binaries allows us to explore the dynamical, nonlinear regime of general relativity and constrain modifications to it. Some of the gravitational-wave events observed by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration have sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio in the merger, allowing us to probe the relaxation of the remnant black hole to its final, stationary state - the so-called black-hole ringdown, which is characterized by a set of quasinormal modes. Can we use the ringdown to constrain deviations from general relativity, as predicted by several of its contenders? Here, we address this question by using an inspiral-merger-ringdown waveform model in th…

    Résumé scientifique

We present a new frequency-domain phenomenological model of the gravitational-wave signal from the inspiral, merger and ringdown of nonprecessing (aligned-spin) black-hole binaries. The model is calibrated to 19 hybrid effective-one-body–numerical-relativity waveforms up to mass ratios of 1∶18 and black-hole spins of |a/m|∼0.85 (0.98 for equal-mass systems). The inspiral part of the model consists of an extension of frequency-domain post-Newtonian expressions, using higher-order terms fit to the hybrids. The merger ringdown is based on a phenomenological ansatz that has been significantly improved over previous models. The model exhibits mismatches of typically less than 1% against all 19 ca…

    Résumé scientifique

The detection of gravitational waves by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo provides an opportunity to test general relativity in a regime that is inaccessible to traditional astronomical observations and laboratory tests. We present four tests of the consistency of the data with binary black hole gravitational waveforms predicted by general relativity. One test subtracts the best-fit waveform from the data and checks the consistency of the residual with detector noise. The second test checks the consistency of the low- and high-frequency parts of the observed signals. The third test checks that phenomenological deviations introduced in the waveform model (including in the post-Newtonian coeffi…
