Résumé scientifique

We prove a non-perturbative, non-axisymmetric characteristic gluing theorem for the Einstein vacuum equations: every Boyer-Lindquist sphere in the domain of outer communication of a Kerr black hole, in particular every symmetry sphere of a Schwarzschild exterior, can be glued along a single outgoing null hypersurface to a horizon sphere of an extremal Kerr black hole of sufficiently large mass. The gluing is exact at both ends and matches the full sphere data, including the transversal curvature. This proves a conjecture of Kehle and Unger in the extremal case. We first raise the angular momentum to the extremal value by rotating shear pulses of non-axisymmetric gravitational radiation, and then damp the incoming data exponentially along a long non-expanding neck. At the degenerate target horizon we invert the linearised problem at all angular frequencies, using a factorisation of a fourth-order angular operator into an angular Teukolsky-Starobinsky product. As an application, we construct one-ended asymptotically flat vacuum initial data whose maximal development contains an exactly Schwarzschild apparent horizon and, at a later advanced time, an exactly extremal Kerr event horizon. This is the first rigorous counterexample to the third law of black hole thermodynamics in vacuum, and proves a second conjecture of Kehle and Unger.

Collapse to extremality: The third law of black hole thermodynamics in quantum gravity
    G. Turiaci, Chih-Hung Wu · 2026 · Pas encore résumé

We present a two-step construction to violate the classical third law of black hole thermodynamics for charged black holes in four dimensions. A near-extremal black hole with an $\mathrm{AdS}_2\times X$ throat is first prepared and then driven to extremality in finite time by a charged shell. This construction suggests that the second step is universal for near-extremal black holes, and can be used to construct violations of the third law for Kerr black holes. The same description allows us to study the process in quantum gravity. The classical collapse condition selects a BF-violating matter sector, for which we construct a holographic dictionary and derive the quantum transition amplitude.…

Flexible numerical characteristic gluing to extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes

Recent work has used the method of characteristic gluing to construct spacetimes violating the third law of black hole mechanics. This paper uses numerical methods to investigate two aspects of the gluing construction of solutions describing the gravitational collapse of a charged scalar field to form an extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole. First, for a massless scalar field, we improve significantly the lower bounds on the size of the final black hole for which gluing is possible. Second, for a massive scalar field, it is known that the formation of an extremal Reissner--Nordstr\"om black hole is impossible if the mass-to-charge ratio of the scalar field exceeds unity. We present stron…

Black holes from a nonlocal equation of state: horizon geometry, singularity structure and thermodynamics
    Hishan Farfán-Bachiloglu, C. R. Muniz, F. Tello-Ortiz · 2026 · Pas encore résumé

We show that a nonlocal equation of state for an anisotropic fluid reduces to a linear equation for the enclosed matter and uniquely selects a Yukawa-type density profile in a static, spherically symmetric Kerr--Schild geometry. The resulting neutral solution has finite-range hair, exponentially screened at large distances, with the asymptotic mass as its only conserved charge, and admits an exact horizon classification: horizonless configurations, Schwarzschild-like black holes, two-horizon geometries with a Cauchy horizon, and an extremal configuration whose mass and radius are obtained in closed form. We prove that the magnitude of the inner surface gravity exceeds that of the outer horiz…

The BTZ black hole, the Third Law and gravitational collapse
    Aidan M. McSharry, H. Reall, Jorge E. Santos · 2026 · Pas encore résumé

We prove that a Third Law of black hole mechanics holds for the BTZ black hole in 3d gravity coupled to matter obeying the dominant energy condition. This law states that initial data containing a trapped surface cannot evolve in finite time to a black hole that coincides with extremal BTZ on the event horizon, for any choice of boundary conditions at infinity. The result is proved by defining a quasilocal energy and angular momentum and using spinorial methods to establish a BPS inequality that is saturated by the extremal BTZ solution. Nevertheless, we show that gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field can result in the formation of an extremal BTZ black hole in finite time. The d…

Thermodynamics of rotating black holes with constrained primary hair

An exact rotating geometry need not define a black hole in equilibrium when its surface gravity varies across the horizon. We construct an asymptotically flat, non-Kerr subfamily of the aligned null solutions of generalized Proca theory whose outer horizon is exactly Killing and isothermal to second order in rotation. The horizon conditions constrain the vector hair, and integrability of the normalized horizon charge fixes the remaining second-order amplitude. Computing the complete gravitational and nonminimal vector surface charges, we obtain the asymptotically normalized mass and total angular momentum, and derive a logarithmic Hamiltonian entropy. The first law holds in both independent …

Mihalis Dafermos, Gustav Holzegel, Igor Rodnianski et al. · 2022 · General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology · cité 13 fois · Résumé IA disponible

We prove global existence and decay for small-data solutions to a class of quasilinear wave equations on a wide variety of asymptotically flat spacetime backgrounds, allowing in particular for the presence of horizons, ergoregions and trapped null geodesics, and including as a special case the Schwarzschild and very slowly rotating $\vert a \vert \ll M$ Kerr family of black holes in general relativity. There are two distinguishing aspects of our approach. The first aspect is its dyadically localised nature: The nontrivial part of the analysis is reduced entirely to time-translation invariant $r^p$-weighted estimates, in the spirit of [DR09], to be applied on dyadic time-slabs which for large…

    Résumé scientifique

The celebrated geodesic congruence equation of Raychaudhuri, together with the resulting singularity theorems of Penrose and Hawking that it enabled, yield a highly general set of conditions under which a spacetime (or, more generically, a pseudo-Riemannian manifold) is expected to become geodesically incomplete. It is a non-trivial question to ask whether (and to what extent) there exist equivalently general conditions under which one expects discrete spacetimes to become geodesically incomplete, and how these conditions might differ from those in the continuum. This article builds upon previous work, in which the conformal and covariant Z4 (CCZ4) formulation of the Cauchy problem for the E…

One Method to Find Them All: Analytic Black Holes beyond Einstein

Rotating black holes offer powerful probes of gravity, but constructing their geometries beyond vacuum general relativity remains challenging. Here we develop a unified framework for constructing stationary, axisymmetric deformations of Kerr from their tidal curvature and physical sources. As a demonstration, we obtain closed-form solutions for six higher-curvature interactions at leading order in the couplings and for generic subextremal spin, without slow-rotation expansions, numerical fitting, or mode decomposition. The solutions pass stringent checks against the field equations, previous mode-by-mode constructions, and known analytic predictions for horizon quantities. We find that the c…
