Résumé scientifique
From their discovery as radio pulsars to landmark multi-messenger observations of their mergers, double neutron stars have transformed our understanding of the extreme Universe and the formation of heavy elements (Drout et al. 2017; Abbott et al. 2017). Yet, uncertainties in their formation result in predicted merger rates spanning orders of magnitude (Tauris et al. 2017; Mandel & Broekgaarden 2022). The most critical stage occurs when a star is stripped of its hydrogen-rich envelope, causing the binary orbit to shrink drastically. Despite its fundamental role, the resulting tight binaries comprising a stripped star and neutron star have remained elusive. Here we report a $\sim$$3.4\,M_{\odot}$ stripped star (Ludwig et al. 2026; Drout et al. 2023; Götberg et al. 2023) orbiting an unseen companion every 4.2 hours. Our orbital and spectroscopic analysis excludes a normal star, which would not fit within the orbit, as well as a second stripped star which would have been detectable in our spectra. Adding constraints from high cadence photometry gives a 99.4% probability that the companion is too massive to be a white dwarf, making a neutron star the most likely companion. We model the system's future and predict that the stripped star will transfer mass again before exploding as a hydrogen-free supernova, leaving a bound pair of neutron stars that will merge after 220 Myr. This system reveals a previously unconstrained phase of binary evolution, uncovering a new class of systems that probes the uncertain physics of massive stars, linking to observable gravitational-wave sources.

Discovery of the missing intermediate-mass helium stars stripped in binariesM. R. Drout, Y. Götberg, B. A. Ludwig et al. · 2023 · Solar and Stellar Astrophysics · cité 3 fois · Résumé IA disponible
« Discovery of the missing intermediate-mass helium stars stripped in binaries » identifie une population d’étoiles dépouillées d’hydrogène, comme le compagnon stellaire étudié ici.
Résumé scientifique
The theory of binary evolution predicts that many massive stars should lose their hydrogen-rich envelopes via interaction with a companion -- revealing hot helium stars with masses of $\sim$2--8M$_{\odot}$. However, only one candidate system had been identified, leaving a large discrepancy between theory and observation. Here, we present a new sample of stars -- identified via excess ultraviolet emission -- whose luminosities, colors, and spectral morphologies are consistent with predictions for the missing population. We detect radial velocity variations indicative of binary motion and measure high temperatures ($T_{\rm eff}\sim60-100$kK), high surface gravities ($\log(g)\sim5$) and deplete…

Population synthesis of low-mass binaries with wind-accreting neutron starsM. Afonina, S. Popov · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
« Population synthesis of low-mass binaries with wind-accreting neutron stars » modélise des binaires avec étoiles à neutrons, mais avec des compagnons de faible masse et un autre régime d’accrétion.
Résumé scientifique
We perform population synthesis modeling of neutron star binary systems containing a low-mass main-sequence companion underfilling its Roche lobe. About $10^5$ such systems are expected to exist in the Milky Way. In the majority of such systems, NSs are expected to start accreting the stellar wind matter within a few Gyr, resulting in the appearance of a dim X-ray source. The exact value of this fraction mainly depends on the efficiency of the propeller spin-down, properties of the stellar wind, and common envelope efficiency. Mostly, NSs in such systems are formed in electron capture supernovae. Thus, they obtain a low natal kick. Due to this, the center-of-mass velocities of such binaries …

An intermediate-mass stripped star with a dark companion in the Small Magellanic CloudLisa Blomberg, K. El-Badry, P. Senchyna et al. · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
« An intermediate-mass stripped star with a dark companion in the Small Magellanic Cloud » caractérise une étoile dépouillée de masse intermédiaire en orbite autour d’un compagnon invisible.
Résumé scientifique
We present discovery of SMASH J004005$-$733351, an intermediate-mass stripped helium star in the Small Magellanic Cloud with a dark companion. The system was identified in a new optical color-selected survey for stripped stars and confirmed through spectroscopic follow-up. We measure an orbital period of $P_{\rm orb}=19.95\pm 0.002$ hours and a radial-velocity semi-amplitude of $K=91.7 ^{+3.2}_{-3.1}\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$. Simultaneous modeling of the optical spectrum and ultraviolet-to-optical spectral energy distribution yields a stripped star evolutionary mass $M_{\rm stripped} = 3.84 \pm 0.54\,M_\odot$, temperature $T_{\rm eff} = 68.3 \pm 6.4$ kK, surface gravity $\log g= 4.76 \pm 0.12$, lu…

Neutron Stars in Globular ClustersNatalia Ivanova, Craig O. Heinke, Frederic A. Rasio · 2007 · astro-ph · cité 2 fois · Résumé IA disponible
« Neutron Stars in Globular Clusters » simule la formation de systèmes avec étoiles à neutrons dans des amas, plutôt que l’évolution d’une binaire serrée avec étoile dépouillée.
Résumé scientifique
Dynamical interactions that occur between objects in dense stellar systems are particularly important for the question of formation of X-ray binaries. We present results of numerical simulations of 70 globular clusters with different dynamical properties and a total stellar mass of 2*10^7 Msun. We find that in order to retain enough neutron stars to match observations we must assume that NSs can be formed via electron-capture supernovae. Our simulations explain the observed dependence of the number of LMXBs on ``collision number'' as well as the large scatter observed between different globular clusters. For millisecond pulsars, we obtain good agreement between our models and the numbers and…

A Sun-like star orbiting a black holeKareem El-Badry, Hans-Walter Rix, Eliot Quataert et al. · 2022 · Solar and Stellar Astrophysics · cité 137 fois · Résumé IA disponible
« A Sun-like star orbiting a black hole » détermine la nature d’un compagnon invisible en combinant orbite et spectroscopie, mais étudie un trou noir et une étoile semblable au Soleil.
Résumé scientifique
We report discovery of a bright, nearby ($G = 13.8$; $d = 480$ pc) Sun-like star orbiting a dark object. We identified the system as a black hole candidate via its astrometric orbital solution from the Gaia mission. Radial velocity monitoring validated and refined the Gaia solution, and spectroscopy ruled out significant light contributions from another star. Joint modeling of radial velocities and astrometry constrains the companion mass to $M_2 = 9.8\pm 0.2\,M_{\odot}$. The spectroscopic orbit alone sets a minimum companion mass of $M_2>5\,M_{\odot}$; if the companion were a $5\,M_{\odot}$ star, it would be 500 times more luminous than the entire system. These constraints are insensitive t…

Extreme eccentricity in double neutron stars without exotic physicsT. Tauris · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
« Extreme eccentricity in double neutron stars without exotic physics » étudie la formation et l’évolution orbitale des binaires d’étoiles à neutrons, notamment après les supernovae.
Résumé scientifique
The formation of neutron stars (NSs) underpins astrophysical phenomena from supernovae (SNe), radio pulsars and X-ray binaries to double NS mergers that power gravitational waves (GWs), short gamma-ray bursts and r-process kilonovae. A recently reported double NS (PSR J0653+0443) with record eccentricity e=0.9924 provides a unique laboratory for studying GW emission and orbital evolution, and challenges existing formation scenarios. Here we show that such extreme eccentricities arise naturally -- without invoking exotic conditions -- from standard binary-SN physics: instantaneous mass loss (Blaauw recoil) and natal kicks readily produce e>0.99 for both compact and wide pre-SN orbits. The obs…

Evidence for the emergence of stellar magnetic fields during rapid mass transferG. Wade, T. Shenar, P. Marchant et al. · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
« Evidence for the emergence of stellar magnetic fields during rapid mass transfer » étudie une binaire massive après transfert de masse et identifie une étoile dépouillée.
Résumé scientifique
Binary interaction fundamentally alters the evolution of massive stars, yet the physical consequences of mass transfer remain poorly constrained. Here we present high-resolution spectroscopic observations of Plaskett's Star (HD 47129) that reveal small radial-velocity variations of its magnetic secondary, coherent with the system's 14.4 d orbital period. These measurements support an evolved, post-mass-transfer configuration in which the narrow-lined primary is a partially Roche-lobe-filling stripped star with a mass of $5.9^{+1.8}_{-1.4},M_\odot$, while the secondary is a $40.8^{+9.3}_{-6.7},M_\odot$, rapidly rotating magnetic accretor. The system provides a rare opportunity to observe the …

Neutrino pair annihilation above merger remnants: implications of a long-lived massive neutron starAlbino Perego, Hannah Yasin, Almudena Arcones · 2017 · High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena · cité 47 fois · Résumé IA disponible
« Neutrino pair annihilation above merger remnants » calcule la production d’énergie après une fusion d’étoiles à neutrons, tandis que l’article prédit la formation d’une telle binaire.
Résumé scientifique
Binary neutron star mergers are plausible progenitor candidates for short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs); however, a detailed explanation of their central engine is still lacking. The annihilation of neutrino pairs has been proposed as one of the possible powering mechanisms. We present calculations of the energy and momentum deposition operated by neutrino pair annihilation above merger remnants. Starting from the results of a detailed, three-dimensional simulation of the aftermath of a binary neutron star merger, we compute the deposition rates over a time scale comparable to the life time of the disk ($t \approx 0.4$ s), assuming a long-lived massive neutron star (MNS). We model neutrino emissio…
