Résumé scientifique
We present the discovery of supernova (SN) Ares, a strongly lensed supernova at $z_{\rm spec}=1.276\pm0.002$ in a massive, triply imaged host galaxy behind the MACS J0308.9+2645 galaxy cluster. JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy spanning the rest-frame optical to NIR of Ares reveals helium features at $5876\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$, $7065\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$, and $10830\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$, as well as H$α$ and Pa$β$. A comparison to local core-collapse SN spectra and light curves leads to a classification of SN Ares as a Type IIb supernova, the highest-redshift member of its class spectroscopically identified. A comparison to local SN IIb light curves provides a phase estimate for the spectrum of $34_{-9}^{+10}$ rest-frame days post-radioactive peak, providing a unique view into a high-redshift stripped-envelope supernova in its late-photospheric evolution. A lens model of the cluster constructed using recent JWST data indicates that SN Ares is the first image to arrive and will reappear in two future images near the center of the cluster plane in $\gtrsim 70$ years, with predicted magnifications of $\sim5\times$ and $\sim1.5\times$. Planned JWST/NIRSpec Multi-Object Spectroscopy of the cluster will allow for more detailed modeling of the lensed system for tighter constraints on the time delay and magnifications, as well as a template spectrum at the location of SN Ares.

SN Helios: A Multiply Imaged Type II Supernova Opening Time-Delay Cosmography beyond redshift of 3S.
We report the discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of SN Helios, a strongly lensed, multiply imaged Type II supernova (SN) at $z=3.34$ behind the galaxy cluster RXC J0018.5+1626. The transient was identified as a red F150W-dropout source (F277W = 26.1 mag) in JWST/NIRCam imaging taken on 2026 July 3 for the VENUS survey, with no counterpart in 2024 December imaging. Director's Discretionary Time observations on 2026 August 17 added second-epoch NIRCam imaging and a deep NIRSpec prism spectrum. The spectrum shows a strong, spectrally resolved H$\alpha$ emission line (FWHM $\approx 7900$ km/s) with a P-Cygni absorption blueshifted by 8800 km/s, together with corresponding H$\beta$ and He I…

SN 2025wiu: A Type Ib Supernova with Post-Peak Optical RebrighteningCheng-Han Lai, Ting-Wan Chen, Yu-Hao Zhang et al. · 2026 · High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena · Résumé IA disponible
We present optical photometric and optical/near-infrared spectroscopic observations of SN 2025wiu, a Type Ib supernova (SN) at z = 0.046927. The r-band light curve exhibits an initial maximum of approximately -18.2 mag, followed by a weaker optical rebrightening reaching approximately -17.8 mag at +38 days in the rest frame relative to the first maximum. However, the reconstructed bolometric light curve does not show a distinct second peak, but instead exhibits a reduced decline rate during the corresponding phase. The spectra consistently show Type Ib features without narrow emission components associated with circumstellar material. The late-time bolometric decline rate of 0.054 +/- 0.008 …

Reaching for the stars -- JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy of a lensed star candidate at $z=4.76$Lukas J. Furtak, Ashish K. Meena, Erik Zackrisson et al. · 2023 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · cité 7 fois · Résumé IA disponible
We present JWST/NIRSpec observations of a highly magnified star candidate at a photometric redshift of $z_{\mathrm{phot}}\simeq4.8$, previously detected in JWST/NIRCam imaging of the strong lensing (SL) cluster MACS J0647+7015 ($z=0.591$). The spectroscopic observation allows us to precisely measure the redshift of the host arc at $z_{\mathrm{spec}}=4.758\pm0.004$, and the star's spectrum displays clear Lyman- and Balmer-breaks commensurate with this redshift. A fit to the spectrum suggests a B-type super-giant star of surface temperature $T_{\mathrm{eff,B}}\simeq15000$ K with either a redder F-type companion ($T_{\mathrm{eff,F}}\simeq6250$K) or significant dust attenuation ($A_V\simeq0.82$)…

Extreme Stellar Death and Galaxy Feedback at z = 2: A Rest-frame Ultraviolet Characterization of the Strongly Lensed Superluminous Supernova 2025wnyWillem B. Hoogendam, David O. Jones, C. Storfer et al. · 2026 · Pas encore résumé
We present photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations of the strongly-lensed H-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN) 2025wny at $z = 2.0155$. We use integral-field Keck-II/KCWI spectroscopy to obtain rest-frame ultraviolet spectra spanning $11$ to $61$ days after maximum light. We use Pan-STARRS photometry to constrain the brightest image's magnification, finding $\mu_A=19.4\pm1.6$, a factor of $\sim$2-4 higher than mass-modeling estimates. We fit the Pan-STARRS photometry with a magnetar energy-injection model including $^{56}$Ni decay using the Modular Open Source Fitter for Transients (MOSFiT); the model can reproduce the near-maximum light curve with parameters typical of local u…

Multi-Wavelength Identification of a Luminous Mid-Infrared Supernova Powered by Circumstellar Interaction with Binary-Driven Pre-supernova Mass LossK.
Terminal mass-loss in massive stars is commonly reconstructed from observations of circumstellar interaction in core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe); however, such signatures can be easily missed depending on the phase when they appear. In this paper, we present a multi-wavelength study of SN\,2022yyz, a nearby CCSN selected by its luminous late-time mid-infrared (MIR) excess in NEOWISE at $>500$ days after the discovery. Classified as a Type II SN at discovery, it reached a peak bolometric luminosity of $1.3^{+0.7}_{-0.4}\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ before fading away with a light-curve drop at $\sim 300$ days. We present late-time HST/WFC3 ultraviolet (UV) imaging and Keck/LRIS spectroscopy at …

Gravitational lensing of the farthest known supernova SN1997ffEdvard Moertsell, Christofer Gunnarsson, Ariel Goobar · 2001 · ApJ, 561, 106 (2001) · cité 23 fois · Résumé IA disponible
We investigate the effects of gravitational lensing due to intervening galaxies on the recently discovered Type Ia supernova at z=1.7, SN1997ff, in the Hubble Deep Field North. We find that it is possible to obtain a wide range of magnifications by varying the mass and/or the velocity dispersion normalization of the lensing galaxies. In order to be able to use SN1997ff to constrain the redshift-distance relation, very detailed modeling of the galaxies to control the systematic effects from lensing is necessary. Thus we argue, that based on our current limited knowledge of the lensing galaxies, it is difficult to use SN1997ff to constrain the values of Omega_M and Omega_Lambda, or even to pla…

UNCOVER: A NIRSpec Identification of a Broad Line AGN at z = 8.50Vasily Kokorev, Seiji Fujimoto, Ivo Labbe et al. · 2023 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · cité 144 fois · Résumé IA disponible
Deep observations with JWST have revealed an emerging population of red point-like sources that could provide a link between the postulated supermassive black hole seeds and observed quasars. In this work we present a JWST/NIRSpec spectrum from the JWST Cycle 1 UNCOVER Treasury survey, of a massive accreting black hole at $z=8.50$, displaying a clear broad-line component as inferred from the H$\beta$ line with FWHM = $3439\pm413$ km s$^{-1}$, typical of the broad line region of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The AGN nature of this object is further supported by high ionization, as inferred from emission lines, and a point-source morphology. We compute the black hole mass of log$_{10}(M_{\…

UNCOVER: A NIRSpec Census of Lensed Galaxies at z=8.50-13.08 Probing a High AGN Fraction and Ionized Bubbles in the ShadowSeiji Fujimoto, Bingjie Wang, John Weaver et al. · 2023 · Astrophysics of Galaxies · cité 45 fois · Résumé IA disponible
We present JWST NIRSpec prism spectroscopy of gravitationally lensed galaxies at $z\gtrsim9$ found behind the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2744 in the UNCOVER Cycle 1 Treasury Program. We confirm the source redshift via emission lines and/or the Ly$\alpha$ break feature for ten galaxies at z=8.50-13.08 down to $M_{\rm UV}=-17.3$. We achieve a high confirmation rate of 100\% for $z>9$ candidates reported in Atek et al. (2023). Using six sources with multiple emission line detections, we find that the offset of the redshift estimates between the lines and the Ly$\alpha$ break alone with prism can be as large as $\pm0.2$, raising caution in designing future follow-up spectroscopy for the break-…
