Nutritionally recommended food for semi- to strict vegetarian diets based on large-scale nutrient composition data

Résumé scientifique
Diet design for vegetarian health is challenging due to the limited food repertoire of vegetarians. This challenge can be partially overcome by quantitative, data-driven approaches that utilise massive nutritional information collected for many different foods. Based on large-scale data of foods' nutrient compositions, the recent concept of nutritional fitness helps quantify a nutrient balance within each food with regard to satisfying daily nutritional requirements. Nutritional fitness offers prioritisation of recommended foods using the foods' occurrence in nutritionally adequate food combinations. Here, we systematically identify nutritionally recommendable foods for semi- to strict vegetarian diets through the computation of nutritional fitness. Along with commonly recommendable foods across different diets, our analysis reveals favourable foods specific to each diet, such as immature lima beans for a vegan diet as an amino acid and choline source, and mushrooms for ovo-lacto vegetarian and vegan diets as a vitamin D source. Furthermore, we find that selenium and other essential micronutrients can be subject to deficiency in plant-based diets, and suggest nutritionally-desirable dietary patterns. We extend our analysis to two hypothetical scenarios of highly personalised, plant-based methionine-restricted diets. Our nutrient-profiling approach may provide a useful guide for designing different types of personalised vegetarian diets.

Comprehensive treatment and analysis of Fishpond sediments as a source of organic fertilizersOlufunke Oyebamiji, Peter Balogun, Emmanuel Stephen et al. · 2023 · Autre biologie quantitative · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Agricultural fertilizers are essential to enhance proper growth and crop yield. Chemical fertilizers endanger ecosystems, soil, plants, and animal and human lives. This has increased interest in biofertilizers which are products that contain living microorganisms or natural compounds derived from organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae that improve soil chemical and biological properties, stimulate plant growth and restore soil fertility. This study aimed to use natural coagulants in the management of fishpond sediment for the potential recovery of nutrients that can be utilized in crop production as organic fertilizers. Fishpond wastewater and sediment were collected, treated with natu…

Continuous Glucose Monitoring PredictionJulia Ann Jose, Trae Waggoner, Sudarsan Manikandan · 2021 · Autre biologie quantitative · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Diabetes is one of the deadliest diseases in the world and affects nearly 10 percent of the global adult population. Fortunately, powerful new technologies allow for a consistent and reliable treatment plan for people with diabetes. One major development is a system called continuous blood glucose monitoring (CGM). In this review, we look at three different continuous meal detection algorithms that were developed using given CGM data from patients with diabetes. From this analysis, an initial meal prediction algorithm was also developed utilizing these methods.

Optimization of Production Protocol of Alkaline Protease by Streptomyces pulvereceusD. Jayasree, T. D. Sandhya Kumari, P. B. Kavi Kishor et al. · 2010 · Autre biologie quantitative · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Extra cellular alkaline protease producing species is an isolate from soil which was characterized and identified as Streptomyces pulvereceus MTCC 8374. Studies on submerged fermentation revealed that maximum level of enzyme production was during early stationary phase. Optimum pH, inoculum and temperature were 9.0, 3 percent and 33 C respectively. Among carbon sources 0.3 peccent starch gave a maximum production followed by maltose, xylose and fructose. High yield of protease production was reported with 1.0 percent casein followed by soybean meal, yeast extract and malt extract. Further, it was optimized with 0.5 percent, 1.0 percentand 1.5 percent of NaCl among which 1 percent NaCl result…

Building a continuous benchmarking ecosystem in bioinformaticsIzaskun Mallona, Almut Luetge, Charlotte Soneson et al. · 2024 · Autre biologie quantitative · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Benchmarking, which involves collecting reference datasets and demonstrating method performances, is a requirement for the development of new computational tools, but also becomes a domain of its own to achieve neutral comparisons of methods. Although a lot has been written about how to design and conduct benchmark studies, this Perspective sheds light on a wish list for a computational platform to orchestrate benchmark studies. We discuss various ideas for organizing reproducible software environments, formally defining benchmarks, orchestrating standardized workflows, and how they interface with computing infrastructure.

Machine Learning Characterization of Cancer Patients-Derived Extracellular Vesicles using Vibrational SpectroscopiesAbicumaran Uthamacumaran, Samir Elouatik, Mohamed Abdouh et al. · 2021 · Applied Intelligence (2022) · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
The early detection of cancer is a challenging problem in medicine. The blood sera of cancer patients are enriched with heterogeneous secretory lipid bound extracellular vesicles (EVs), which present a complex repertoire of information and biomarkers, representing their cell of origin, that are being currently studied in the field of liquid biopsy and cancer screening. Vibrational spectroscopies provide non-invasive approaches for the assessment of structural and biophysical properties in complex biological samples. In this pilot study, multiple Raman spectroscopy measurements were performed on the EVs extracted from the blood sera of 9 patients consisting of four different cancer subtypes (…

Foundations of biologyJean-Louis Sikorav, Alan Braslau, Arach Goldar · 2014 · Autre biologie quantitative · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
It is often stated that there are no laws in biology, where everything is contingent and could have been otherwise, being solely the result of historical accidents. Furthermore, the customary introduction of fundamental biological entities such as individual organisms, cells, genes, catalysts and motors remains largely descriptive; constructive approaches involving deductive reasoning appear, in comparison, almost absent. As a consequence, both the logical content and principles of biology need to be reconsidered. The present article describes an inquiry into the foundations of biology. The foundations of biology are built in terms of elements, logic and principles, using both the language a…

Effect of E-cigarette Use and Social Network on Smoking Behavior Change: An agent-based model of E-cigarette and Cigarette InteractionYang Qin, Rojiemiahd Edjoc, Nathaniel D Osgood · 2019 · Autre biologie quantitative · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Despite a general reduction in smoking in many areas of the developed world, it remains one of the biggest public health threats. As an alternative to tobacco, the use of electronic cigarettes (ECig) has been increased dramatically over the last decade. ECig use is hypothesized to impact smoking behavior through several pathways, not only as a means of quitting cigarettes and lowering risk of relapse, but also as both an alternative nicotine delivery device to cigarettes, as a visible use of nicotine that can lead to imitative behavior in the form of smoking, and as a gateway nicotine delivery technology that can build high levels of nicotine tolerance and pave the way for initiation of smok…
