Editorial: Systems-Based Approaches to Addressing Child Mental Health Parity
Andres Julio Pumariega (University of Florida Health, University of Florida)
Résumé : The advent of the Wellstone-Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA1), passed as part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), raised much hope about the benefits of its implementation, particularly for children’s behavioral health services. The data on services access and utilization have pointed to the chronic low percentages of access to mental health treatment for children and youth. However, its implementation has posed major challenges. Though all aspects of the ACA, and particularly mental health parity, have been typically popular among the general US population, they have encountered significant resistance both as a result of industry pressures, policy disputes around health care reform, as well as the inherent complexity of the children’s behavioral health service system itself.
