The long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) models are popular deep-learning architectures for stock market forecasting. Various studies have speculated that incorporating financial news sentiment in forecasting could produce a better performance than using stock features alone. This study carried a normalized comparison on the performances of LSTM and GRU for stock market forecasting under the same conditions and objectively assessed the significance of incorporating the financial news sentiments in stock market forecasting. This comparative study is conducted on the cooperative deep-learning architecture proposed by us. Our experiments show that: (1) both LSTM and GRU are circumstantial in stock forecasting if only the stock market features are used; (2) the performance of LSTM and GRU for stock price forecasting can be significantly improved by incorporating the financial news sentiments with the stock features as the input; (3) both the LSTM-News and GRU-News models are able to produce better forecasting in stock price equally; (4) the cooperative deep-learning architecture proposed in this study could be modified as an expert system incorporating both the LSTM-News and GRU-News models to recommend the best possible forecasting whichever model can produce dynamically.

Using time-series data analysis for stock-price forecasting (SPF) is complex and challenging because many factors can influence stock prices (e.g., inflation, seasonality, economic policy, societal behaviors). Such factors can be analyzed over time for SPF. Machine learning and deep learning have been shown to obtain better forecasts of stock prices than traditional approaches. This study, therefore, proposed a method to enhance the performance of an SPF system based on advanced machine learning and deep learning approaches. First, we applied extreme gradient boosting as a feature-selection technique to extract important features from high-dimensional time-series data and remove redundant features. Then, we fed selected features into a deep long short-term memory (LSTM) network to forecast stock prices. The deep LSTM network was used to reflect the temporal nature of the input time series and fully exploit future contextual information. The complex structure enables this network to capture more stochasticity within the stock price. The method does not change when applied to stock data or Forex data. Experimental results based on a Forex dataset covering 2008–2018 showed that our approach outperformed the baseline autoregressive integrated moving average approach with regard to mean absolute error, mean squared error, and root-mean-square error.

Stock price forecasting has remained an extremely challenging problem for many decades due to the high volatility of the stock market. Recent efforts have been devoted to modeling complex stock correlations toward joint stock price forecasting. Existing works share a common neural architecture that learns temporal patterns from individual stock series and then mixes up temporal representations to establish stock correlations. However, they only consider time-aligned stock correlations stemming from all the input stock features, which suffer from two limitations. First, stock correlations often occur momentarily and in a cross-time manner. Second, the feature effectiveness is dynamic with market variation, which affects both the stock sequential patterns and their correlations. To address the limitations, this paper introduces MASTER, a MArkert-guided Stock TransformER, which models the momentary and cross-time stock correlation and leverages market information for automatic feature selection. MASTER elegantly tackles the complex stock correlation by alternatively engaging in intra-stock and inter-stock information aggregation. Experiments show the superiority of MASTER compared with previous works and visualize the captured realistic stock correlation to provide valuable insights.

In order to mitigate investments, stock price forecasting has attracted more attention in recent years. Aiming at the discreteness, non-normality, high-noise in high-frequency data, a support vector machine regression (SVR) algorithm is introduced in this paper. However, the characteristics in different periods of the same stock, or the same periods of different stocks are significantly different. So, SVR with fixed parameters is difficult to satisfy with the constantly changing data flow. To tackle this problem, an adaptive SVR was proposed for stock data at three different time scales, including daily data, 30-min data, and 5-min data. Experiments show that the improved SVR with dynamic optimization of learning parameters by particle swarm optimization can get a better result than compared methods including SVR and back-propagation neural network.

Investing in stocks is an important tool for modern people's financial management, and how to forecast stock prices has become an important issue. In recent years, deep learning methods have successfully solved many forecast problems. In this paper, we utilized multiple factors for the stock price forecast. The news articles and PTT forum discussions are taken as the fundamental analysis, and the stock historical transaction information is treated as technical analysis. The state-of-the-art natural language processing tool BERT are used to recognize the sentiments of text, and the long short term memory neural network (LSTM), which is good at analyzing time series data, is applied to forecast the stock price with stock historical transaction information and text sentiments. According to experimental results using our proposed models, the average root mean square error (RMSE ) has 12.05 accuracy improvement.

Stock price forecasting has been reported as a challenging task in the scientific and financial communities due to stock prices’ nonlinear and dynamic nature. Machine learning models exhibit capabilities that allow them to handle nonlinear data and be candidate tools for stock price forecasting. In this study, an empirical evaluation of eight conventional machine learning models’ is conducted to forecast the stock price of eleven companies belonging to the Saudi Stock Exchange. Moreover, the optimal configuration of hyperparameters in each machine learning model is identified. Forecasting performance is evaluated by two well-known error metrics: Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE). Wilcoxson effect size is utilized to determine the impact of hyperparameter tuning by comparing tuned and un-tuned machine learning models’ forecasting performance. Empirical results indicate there are varying impacts of hyperparameter tuning of machine learning models in forecasting stock price. After tuning the hyperparameters, Support Vector Regression outperforms other forecasting models with a significant statistical difference. In contrast, Kernel Ridge Regression shows noteworthy forecasting performance without hyperparameter tuning with respect to other un-tuned forecasting models. However, Decision Tree and K-Nearest Neighbour are the poor-performing models which demonstrate inadequate forecasting performance even after hyperparameter tuning.

This paper analyzed and compared the forecast effect of three machine learning algorithms (multiple linear regression, random forest and LSTM network) in stock price forecast using the closing price data of NASDAQ ETF and data of statistical factors. The test results show that the prediction effect of the closing price data is better than that of statistical factors, but the difference is not significant. Multiple linear regression is most suitable for stock price forecast. The second is random forest, which is prone to overfitting. The forecast effect of LSTM network is the worst and the values of RMSE and MAPE were the highest. The forecast effect of future stock price using closing price of NASDAQ ETF is better than that using statistical factors, but the difference is not significant.

In this paper, we compare various approaches to stock price prediction using neural networks. We analyze the performance fully connected, convolutional, and recurrent architectures in predicting the next day value of S&P 500 index based on its previous values. We further expand our analysis by including three different optimization techniques: Stochastic Gradient Descent, Root Mean Square Propagation, and Adaptive Moment Estimation. The numerical experiments reveal that a single layer recurrent neural network with RMSprop optimizer produces optimal results with validation and test Mean Absolute Error of 0.0150 and 0.0148 respectively.

Prediction of future movement of stock prices has been the subject matter of many research work. On one hand, we have proponents of the Efficient Market Hypothesis who claim that stock prices cannot be predicted accurately. On the other hand, there are propositions that have shown that, if appropriately modelled, stock prices can be predicted fairly accurately. The latter have focused on choice of variables, appropriate functional forms and techniques of forecasting. This work proposes a granular approach to stock price prediction by combining statistical and machine learning methods with some concepts that have been advanced in the literature on technical analysis. The objective of our work is to take 5 minute daily data on stock prices from the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in India and develop a forecasting framework for stock prices. Our contention is that such a granular approach can model the inherent dynamics and can be fine-tuned for immediate forecasting. Six different techniques including three regression-based approaches and three classification-based approaches are applied to model and predict stock price movement of two stocks listed in NSE - Tata Steel and Hero Moto. Extensive results have been provided on the performance of these forecasting techniques for both the stocks.
