The visual object tracking technology of remote sensing images has important applications in areas with high safety performance such as national defense, homeland security, and intelligent transportation in smart cities. However, previous research demonstrates that adversarial examples pose a significant threat to remote sensing imagery. This article first explores the impact of adversarial examples in the field of visual object tracking in remote sensing imagery. We design a classification- and regression-based loss function for the popular Siamese RPN series of visual object tracking models and use the PGD gradient-based attack method to generate adversarial examples. Additionally, we consider the temporal consistency of video frames and design an adversarial examples attack method based on momentum continuation. We evaluate our method on the remote sensing visual object tracking datasets SatSOT and VISO and the traditional datasets OTB100 and UAV123. The experimental results show that our approach can effectively reduce the performance of the tracker.

The deep learning algorithm has achieved great success in the field of computer vision, but some studies have pointed out that the deep learning model is vulnerable to attacks adversarial examples and makes false decisions. This challenges the further development of deep learning, and urges researchers to pay more attention to the relationship between adversarial examples attacks and deep learning security. This work focuses on adversarial examples, optimizes the generation of adversarial examples from the view of adversarial robustness, takes the perturbations added in adversarial examples as the optimization parameter. We propose RWR-NM-PGD attack algorithm based on random warm restart mechanism and improved Nesterov momentum from the view of gradient optimization. The algorithm introduces improved Nesterov momentum, using its characteristics of accelerating convergence and improving gradient update direction in optimization algorithm to accelerate the generation of adversarial examples. In addition, the random warm restart mechanism is used for optimization, and the projected gradient descent algorithm is used to limit the range of the generated perturbations in each warm restart, which can obtain better attack effect. Experiments on two public datasets show that the algorithm proposed in this work can improve the success rate of attacking deep learning models without extra time cost. Compared with the benchmark attack method, the algorithm proposed in this work can achieve better attack success rate for both normal training model and defense model. Our method has average attack success rate of 46.3077%, which is 27.19% higher than I-FGSM and 9.27% higher than PGD. The attack results in 13 defense models show that the attack algorithm proposed in this work is superior to the benchmark algorithm in attack universality and transferability.

Adversarial attacks on large-scale vision–language foundation models, such as the contrastive language–image pretraining (CLIP) model, can significantly degrade performance across various tasks by generating adversarial examples that are indistinguishable from the original images to human perception. Although adversarial training methods, which train models with adversarial examples, have been proposed to defend against such attacks, they typically require prior knowledge of the attack. These methods also lead to a trade-off between robustness to adversarial examples and accuracy for clean images. To address these challenges, we propose an adversarial defense method based on human brain activity data by hypothesizing that such adversarial examples are not misrecognized by humans. The proposed method employs an encoder that integrates the features of brain activity and augmented images from the original images. Then, by maximizing the similarity between features predicted by the encoder and the original visual features, we obtain features with the visual invariance of the human brain and the diversity of data augmentation. Consequently, we construct a model that is robust against adversarial attacks and maintains accuracy for clean images. Unlike existing methods, the proposed method is not trained on any specific adversarial attack information; thus, it is robust against unknown attacks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method significantly enhances robustness to adversarial attacks on the CLIP model without degrading accuracy for clean images. The primary contribution of this study is that the performance trade-off can be overcome using brain activity data.
