- Gonze et al. challenged the validity of density functional theory (DFT) in Hohenberg-Kohn formulation for crystalline solids in a homogenous electric field
- They proposed an alternative theory called density-and-polarization functional theory
- Mazin and Cohen showed that the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem is still valid and Gonze et al.'s theorem holds in addition to it, rather than instead of it
- The Hohenberg-Kohn theorem states that the ground-state energy and electron density of a system are uniquely determined by its external potential
- Gonze et al.'s theorem deals with how this external potential affects the polarization response of a crystal
- Mazin and Cohen's findings reinforce the importance of the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem as a fundamental principle underlying DFT
- There is a need for further research to fully understand how electric fields affect crystalline materials.

Abstract: In a recent PRL, Gonze et al claim that the density functional theory in Hohenberg-Kohn formulation is not valid for crystalline solids in a homogenious electric field. They introduce another theory, density-and-polarization functional theory, which has to substitute the DFT in the calculations of the long-wave dielectric response. We show that the theorem proven by Gonzo et al holds in addition to, and not instead of, the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem.
