The ever increasing demands for using resource-constrained mobile devices for running more resource intensive applications nowadays has initiated the development of cyber foraging solutions that offload parts or whole computational intensive tasks to more powerful surrogate stationary computers and run them on behalf of mobile devices as required. The choice of proper mix of mobile devices and surrogates has remained an unresolved challenge though. In this paper, we propose a new decision-making mechanism for cyber foraging systems to select the best locations to run an application, based on context metrics such as the specifications of surrogates, the specifications of mobile devices, application specification, and communication network specification. Experimental results show faster response time and lower energy consumption of benched applications compared to when applications run wholly on mobile devices and when applications are offloaded to surrogates blindly for execution.

Mobile device proficiency is increasingly required to participate in society. Unfortunately, there still exists a digital divide between younger and older adults, especially with respect to mobile devices (i.e., tablet computers and smartphones). Training is an important goal to ensure that older adults can reap the benefits of these devices. However, efficient/effective training depends on the ability to gauge current proficiency levels. We developed a new scale to accurately assess the mobile device proficiency of older adults: the Mobile Device Proficiency Questionnaire (MDPQ). We present and validate the MDPQ and a short 16-question version of the MDPQ (MDPQ-16). The MDPQ, its subscales, and the MDPQ-16 were found to be highly reliable and valid measures of mobile device proficiency in a large sample. We conclude that the MDPQ and MDPQ-16 may serve as useful tools for facilitating mobile device training of older adults and measuring mobile device proficiency for research purposes.

Distributing the inference of convolutional neural network (CNN) to multiple mobile devices has been studied in recent years to achieve real-time inference without losing accuracy. However, how to map CNN to devices remains a challenge. On the one hand, scheduling the workload of state-of-the-art CNNs with multiple devices is NP-Hard because the structures of CNNs are directed acyclic graphs (DAG) rather than simple chains. On the other hand, distributing the inference workload suffers from expensive communication and unbalanced computation due to the wireless environment and heterogeneous devices. This paper presents PICO, a pipeline cooperation framework to accelerate the inference of versatile CNNs on diverse mobile devices. At its core, PICO features: (1) a generic graph partition algorithm that considers the characteristics of any given CNN and orchestrates it into a list of model pieces with suitable granularity, and (2) a many-to-many mapping algorithm that produces the best pipeline configuration for heterogeneous devices. In our experiment with 2 ~ 8 Raspberry-Pi devices, the throughput can be improved by 1.8 ~ 6.8x under different CPU frequencies.

The ARMrayan Multimedia Mobile CMS (Content Management System) is the first mobile CMS that gives the opportunity to users for creating multimedia J2ME mobile applications with their desired content, design and logo; simply, without any need for writing even a line of code. The low-level programming and compatibility problems of the J2ME, along with UI designing difficulties, makes it hard for most people -even programmers- to broadcast their content to the widespread mobile phones used by nearly all people. This system provides user-friendly, PC-based tools for creating a tree index of pages and inserting multiple multimedia contents (e.g. sound, video and picture) in each page for creating a J2ME mobile application. The output is a stand-alone Java mobile application that has a user interface, shows texts and pictures and plays music and videos regardless of the type of devices used as long as the devices support the J2ME platform. Bitmap fonts have also been used thus Middle Eastern languages can be easily supported on all mobile phone devices. We omitted programming concepts for users in order to simplify multimedia content-oriented mobile application designing for use in educational, cultural or marketing centers. Ordinary operators can now create a variety of multimedia mobile applications such as tutorials, catalogues, books, and guides in minutes rather than months. Simplicity and power has been the goal of this CMS. In this paper, we present the software engineered-designed concepts of the ARMrayan MCMS along with the implementation challenges faces and solutions adapted.

Abstract Objective To examine evidence of internal structure validity, dimensionality, and reliability of the Brazilian version of the Mobile Device Proficiency Questionnaire (MDPQ-Brazil) in older adults. Methods This psychometric study used a convenience sample of 259 individuals aged 60 years or older who use mobile devices (smartphones and/or tablets). Data were collected using an online sociodemographic questionnaire and the MDPQ-Brazil. Descriptive analyses, normality testing, exploratory factor analysis using a polychoric matrix and RDWLS estimator, parallel analysis, model fit indices, and reliability estimates were performed. Results The sample had a mean age of 72.0 years, with a predominance of women and a high educational level. Exploratory factor analysis identified an essentially one-dimensional structure, with a general factor explaining most of the variance. The model exhibited good fit indices (GFI=0.983; AGFI=0.982) and high stability (H=0.982). Factor loadings were adequate (>0.30) for all items. Reliability was high (α=0.977; ω=0.979). Higher proficiency for basic functions and communication was observed, whereas lower performance for data storage and calendar use was found. Conclusion The MDPQ-Brazil demonstrated consistent evidence of validity and reliability, proving suitable for assessing the digital proficiency of older Brazilian adults. However, the findings should be interpreted with caution due to the sample’s high educational attainment and the absence of measurement invariance tests.

ARM TrustZone is widely deployed on commercial-off-the-shelf mobile devices for secure execution. However, many Apps cannot enjoy this feature because it brings many constraints to App developers. Previous works have been proposed to build a secure execution environment for developers on top of TrustZone. Unfortunately, these works are still not fully-fledged solutions for mobile Apps, especially for emerging intelligent Apps. To this end, we propose LEAP, which is a lightweight developer-friendly TEE solution for mobile Apps. LEAP enables isolated codes to execute in parallel and access peripheral (e.g., mobile GPUs) with ease, flexibly manages system resources upon different workloads, and offers the auto DevOps tool to help developers prepare the codes running on it. We implement the LEAP prototype on the off-the-shelf ARM platform and conduct extensive experiments on it. The experimental results show that Apps can be adapted to run with LEAP easily and efficiently. Compared to the state-of-the-art work along this research line, LEAP can achieve an average 3.57x speedup in supporting intelligent Apps using mobile GPU acceleration.

This report presents the CuriosAI team's submission to the EgoExo4D Proficiency Estimation Challenge at CVPR 2025. We propose two methods for multi-view skill assessment: (1) a multi-task learning framework using Sapiens-2B that jointly predicts proficiency and scenario labels (43.6 % accuracy), and (2) a two-stage pipeline combining zero-shot scenario recognition with view-specific VideoMAE classifiers (47.8 % accuracy). The superior performance of the two-stage approach demonstrates the effectiveness of scenario-conditioned modeling for proficiency estimation.
